    Painting Palestine
In their paintings they tell stories. Amina Elbendary reads through the works of Ismail Shammout and Tamam El-Akhal at Horizon One "Ismail Shammout and Tamam El-Akhal's huge paintings seek to tell the story of the Palestinian people. At some points it feels like walking through a giant story-book." Left: Shammout's "Intifada"; right: El-Akhal's "Challenge" There is not much chance you are going to miss it. Even at the slim chance the huge banners outside elude you, you will know the moment you walk into the Horizon One gallery at the Mr and Mrs Mohamed Mahmoud Khalil Museum that you are entering a sacred realm (you almost expect to find an altar centre stage). There is music, Palestinian music, playing in the background. And there are colours: greens, reds, blacks, ambers. There is art, for sure, there are paintings; big ones that almost overcrowd the gallery. But, even more overpowering, there is a nation. And it is Palestinian; you are not left to doubt or wonder. And then the drama begins: in a series of paintings the artist chronicles the plight of the Palestinians, the forceful uprooting from their homes of the people of Al-Lid and Al-Ramla in July 1948. "Al-'Atash 'An Tariq Al-Tih (Road to Nowhere)" obviously recalls the Exodus. Human bodies lie strewn across the canvas, in a desert mountain area, obviously hot and dry, begging for water.

    Antigone in Palestine
Where are we? In Thebes, Jenin or Ramallah? Nehad Selaiha watches Sophocles's Antigone at the AUC The scene facing me at the Falaki Theatre was one of total devastation: the ruins of a city ravaged by war or wrecked by a violent earthquake. In the eerie blue light enveloping the stage you could make out, high up, near the flies, what looked like a huge crane lying on its side, precariously perched on top of the slanting wall of a gutted, collapsed building, with other wreckage flanking it on either side. Red light flickered here and there from underneath the rubble through metal bars. Stancil Campbell's set, it seemed, had transported the Greek Thebes to the West Bank to Jenin, Nablus and Ramallah and it was obvious, even for those who had not had time to glance at the programme before the show, and even before the actors stormed in through the auditorium in modern dress and combat uniform, to face us silently for a brief, unsettling moment, where the production was heading and where director Frank Bradley and his crew had taken their inspiration. In his director's notes, Bradley says: "When, a year ago, we chose to put

    CULTURAL INSTITUTIONS IN PALESTINE
    CULTURE IN PALESTINE
The Palestinian cultural movement has undergone many centuries of upheaval and change. One of the results of this turbulent history has been an inconsistent and checkered life for Artists with its consequent effects upon their ability to work. The denial of training, the lack of venues, a naive audience, isolation from international cultural movements, political repression and censorship, restriction of movement and above all the need to earn a living have all contributed to the difficult situation facing today's cultural practitioners.
Once again the Palestinian nation is confronting a period of change and one of the most important stages in its history, the transition to sovereign independence. The struggle for a national identity has and still continues to play an important role in the establishment of a Palestinian society. Just as Artists were able to assist in clearly depicting the symbols of this nation's identity, so too are they trying to recognize and understand what is Palestinian culture and who they are as Palestinian Artists.
In order to go forward however, it is first a beneficial and necessary step to see what came before. One of the tools which can most ably assist Artists in this quest is the research into, and understanding of, cultural heritage, its influences, inspirations and skills. No documentation exists which encompasses the history of all aspects of Palestinian culture.

APPENDIX 2 AUDIENCE RESEARCH 1. Question: If you had the opportunity to attend cultural events such as theater, cinema, art exhibitions and music events would you go? Bethlehem University Students: A. People would go but nothing could begin too quickly after so many years of having no such activities. We didn't have such activities because of the political situation and the whole atmosphere. So there needs to be a period of time to get used to these things. A. Children and people in general need this type of art, music etc. But it depends on what kind. Each person has their own individual tastes. A. During the Intifada, the interest in music was only to reach people as a political issue but now it's different. A. I'm interested in music and theater more than exhibitions. I love to watch movies and go to concerts since I can go to the cinema in Jerusalem or music at Al Hakawati and in Ramallah and Bethlehem University. Beit Sahour Woman's Center: A. Everyone would go to cultural events. We have attended good concerts in Beit Sahour. We would love to see folk dancing. We also enjoy listening to modern songs in Arabic and English. 2. Question: Is arts and culture something that was part of your upbringing at
