Palestine: History Introduction Palestine stands alone among the Roman provinces in that here only there existed a national identity strong enough effectively to challenge Roman rule. That identity depended on a body of Hebrew religious writings that constituted a concrete locus for the formation of durable political and religious institutions. This locus and these institutions provided the framework for the two great rebellions that the Romans faced in Palestine in the first and second centuries CE; the messianic promise that the writings contained and misgovernment and Romanizing policy provided the motivations for revolt. Precisely because these rebellions grew out out of the Jewish national identity, the Romans found them far more dangerous than any revolt based on generalized resistance to Romanization, Hellenization, or paganism or on any particular program for a new political and religious orderand many such programs did indeed emerge from this remarkable region. The section on People and Places offers further information on the Jewish people and their religious writings. Here I offer a survey of the history of the region with particular reference to the problem nationalism presented to the Roman rulers, at least until the Romans demolished the institutions (but not the writings and the national identity) in the 130s. Jewish resistance to Roman rule explains why the process of Romanization in Palestine had to involve not only the founding of colonies and other Greco-Roman cities and the co-optation of the local elites but also forced migrationwhat we now call ethnic cleansingand the permanent stationing of an unusually large legionary force. After the 130s Palestine lost much of its unusual and problematic features with respect to its position in the imperial system, and the large legionary force moved elsewhere. Still, the religious identity now of the Samaritans continued to challenge the authority of the government until the end of Late Antiquity.

Arab refugees in Israel began identifying themselves as part of a Palestinian people in 1967, two decades after the establishment of the modern State of Israel. Since the Jewish conquest in 1272 B.C.E. , the Jews have had dominion over the land for one thousand years with a continuous presence in the land for the past 3,300 years. Palestine, 1913-1948: a brief history Tom Tomlinson University of Strathclyde Before 1914 Link to Chronology Back to Palestine homepage Events in Palestine in the first half of the twentieth century represent one of the most contested arenas of modern history. It was an arena in which texts were crucial - promises made, promises broken, and promises withdrawn. Before 1914 The Middle East was an area of contested European influence at the beginning of the twentieth century. Britain had taken over the administration of Egypt in 1882, to protect foreign investments and ensure the security of the Suez Canal, which was the key to imperial strategic planning. The rest of the area was under the nominal control of the Ottoman (Turkish) Empire, but Britain, France and Germany all sought influence through loans and railway construction. Palestine itself was significant only because it was on the eastern border of Suez. Oil was not yet a major concern - the first oil in the area was discovered in Persia (Iran) in 1908, and the Anglo-Persian Oil Company was formed in 1913. Britain also had an interest in the Gulf, which provided strategic and supply bases to ensure the route to India. Back to Top With the outbreak of war in 1914, Turkey joined the Central Powers (Germany and Austro-Hungary), and occupied Sinai (the area bordering on Suez). Britain now became interested in finding allies against the Turks, especially after the failure of the Allied landings at Gallipoli in 1915. Over the next two years, the British sought three sets of allies, and made promises to each of them about what would happen after the war was over. Unfortunately, these promises were mutually-contradictory.

History of the Israel - Palestine Conflict by T. L. Barnhill For centuries, the Canaanites controlled this region until another people known as Philistines appeared. With their superior iron weapons, they conquered and occupied a part of Canaan on the southern coast. In approximately 1125 BCE, Hebrew tribes known as Israelites migrated into the region. The Israelites believed that they had a special covenant with God that they were to receive, from God, the land of Canaan which they called, "The Promised Land". Believing that they were obeying the will of their god, the Israelites successfully defeated the Canaanites in approximately 1100 BCE, but they found the Philistines more difficult to subdue largely due to their superior iron weapons. During the age of the "Judges" in Israel's history, the Philistines conquered Israel in approximately 1050 BCE. Being without a king themselves and wanting to immitate their more powerful neighbors, the Israelites annointed Saul to be their first king in 1020 BCE. Saul waged war against the Philistines but died at the battle of Gilboa. David became the second, and greatest, king of Israel. From 1000 to 961 BCE, he united the tribes of Israel, conquered the Philistines, and consolidated his empire. The Philistines were made a vassal state and later assimilated under the rule of David's son, King Solomon. At that moment in history, the Philistines ceased to exist as a culture, a nation and a people. The hegemony of the Israelites, however, was not to last. Political and religious rivalries from within divided the Kingdom of Israel into Israel (in the north) and Judah (in the south). The north was conquered by the Assyrians in 722 BCE but, nevertheless, remained a Hebrew state. One year later the Babylonians captured Judah and carried off many of the Hebrews into captivity in Babylon (historically known as "The Babylonian Captivity"). This was a common practice by Nebuchadnezzar who found it an effective method of discouraging rebellion by conquered states. During this time, smaller tribes of Moabites, Ammonites, and Edomites began asserting their influence over the regions of Judah and Israel. The exiled Israelites continued to believe that their God would one day restore the kingdom of Israel to them.

Palestine ,The Rise Of Islam To AD1900 Abbasid to Othmaniate rule Abbasid rule. Umayyad rule ended in 750. Along with Syria, Palestine became subject to 'Abbasid authority, based in Baghdad. Under the 'Abbasids, the process of Islamization gained momentum. The 'Abbasid rulers encouraged the settlement and fortification of coastal Palestine so as to secure it against the Byzantine enemy. During the second half of the 9th century, however, signs of internal decay began to appear in the 'Abbasid empire. Petty states, and some indeed not so petty, emerged in different parts of the realm. One of the first to affect Palestine was the Tulunid dynasty (868-905) of Egypt, which marked the beginning of the disengagement of Egypt and, with it, of Syria and Palestine from 'Abbasid rule. FATIMID Rule. In the meantime, Fatimid dynasty was rising to power in North Africa. It moved eastward to seize not only Egypt but also Palestine and Syria and to threaten Baghdad itself. The Fatimids seized Egypt from the Ikhshidids in 969 and in less than a decade were able to establish a precarious control over Palestine, where they faced Qarmatian, Seljuq Byzantine, and periodic Bedouin opposition. Palestine was thus often reduced to a battlefield. in 1071 the Seljuqs captured Jerusalem, increased despite political instability. The Fatimids recaptured the city in 1098 only to relinquish it a year later to a new enemy, the crusaders of western Europe The Crusaders.
