Formerly part of Colombia, Panama was founded with the support of the United States in 1903, after Colombia refused to cooperate with the Canal Project. Needless to say, the Canal Treaty was promptly signed after their secession was complete. The US Army Corp of Engineers built the Canal between 1904 and 1914, with the zone adjacent to the canal being legally considered sovereign US territory. In 1977, President Jimmy Carter signed a treaty gradually turning over this territory, with a complete US withdrawal set for December 31, 1999, which the US lived up to, although the treaty still provides the US with the right to oversee the security of the Canal if necessary. Panama can celebrate three Independence days; the first from Spain in 1821, as well as from Colombia in 1903, and 1999 when the US formally left the country to seek its future completely unfettered. Panama is a country with a fascinating history and a future that will be equally remarkable.

    FIVE THEMES IN GEOGRAPHY
Source: National Geographic Society LOCATION: (Absolute and Relative): Location answers the basic question: Where? Absolute and relative locations are two ways of describing the positions of the Earth's physical and cultural features. For example, knowing the absolute, or exact, location of Show Low, AZ, showed us where the forest fires occurred. A grid system representing latitude and longitude is one way of showing absolute locations. Another way of looking at location has to do with the interaction of places. This is relative location-the way a city is connected to other places. A map can provide a starting point for gathering information. IN WHAT MOUNTAIN RANGE IS MT. ST. HELENS LOCATED? ARE THERE OTHER VOLCANOES IN THAT RANGE? PLACE: (Physical and Human Characteristics): All places on Earth have special features that distinguish them from other places. Geographers usually describe places by their physical and human characteristics. Los Angeles, CA, and its neighboring communities, for example, is known for such physical characteristics as sandy beaches, abundant sunshine, and a mild climate. Human characteristics such as the density of population and its ethnic makeup also play an important role in shaping the image of Los Angeles.

Central America Central America: an Introduction The Land Geography and Geology
    Geography and Geology
At 523,865 sq. km, Central America is only one-fourth the size of Mexico, its neighbor to the north, and half the size of Colombia, its neighbor to the South. However, its geographic importance belies its tiny size. Serving as the land bridge between North and South America, Central America forms an important oceanic barrier, separating the Pacific from the Caribbean and the Atlantic. In geological terms, Central America is a newborn babe. While the North and South American continents have existed as separate landmasses for nearly 140 million years, it was only five million years ago that Central America emerged heroically to connect the two. A fractured piece of the North American continental crust formed the northern isthmus, and later volcanic activity and sedimentary deposits created Southern Central America. Parts of Nicaragua and Panama were the last to fill in, perhaps as recently as three million years ago. Central America sits atop the junction of four tectonic plates-the Cocos, Caribbean, North American, and Nazca. Geologically speaking, it's not a pretty picture. The Cocos plate pushes into the Caribbean plate at a rate of 10m per century-a veritable geological sprint. As the Cocos slides beneath it, the Caribbean plate rises and breaks up, producing earthquakes and volcanoes.

With US backing, Panama seceded from Colombia in 1903 and promptly signed a treaty with the US allowing for the construction of a canal and US sovereignty over a strip of land on either side of the structure (the Panama Canal Zone). The Panama Canal was built by the US Army Corps of Engineers between 1904 and 1914. On 7 September 1977, an agreement was signed for the complete transfer of the Canal from the US to Panama by the end of 1999. Certain portions of the Zone and increasing responsibility over the Canal were turned over in the intervening years. With US help, dictator Manuel NORIEGA was deposed in 1989. The entire Panama Canal, the area supporting the Canal, and remaining US military bases were turned over to Panama by or on 31 December 1999.
