The Paralympic History Overview
The Paralympics are a multi-sport, multi-disability competition of elite, world-class, disabled athletes. Although similar in scope to the Olympic Games, the Paralympic Games provide an elite competition opportunity to athletes with a functional disability, which precludes their involvement in open competition of the Olympic Games. Paralympic athletes go through rigorous training year-round to prepare for their respective events. They are the best of the best, who through determination and hard work, earn the honor of representing the United States on the competitive playing field at the Paralympic Games. The Paralympic Games are held approximately two weeks after the Olympic Games in the same host city/country. The Paralympic Games are distinctly different than the Special Olympic World Games. The two, which are often confused as one in the same, are totally separate competitions. Each Games are developed by entirely different organizations which have different objectives. The Paralympic Games provide world-class competition for elite disabled athletes at the highest level. Much like Olympians, Paralympians compete for gold, silver and bronze medals against the best-disabled athletes in the world. Special Olympics International focuses on participation of everyone and involves athletes from ages 8 to 80 with mental retardation. All participants are considered winners and receive medals. The first Paralympic Games was held in Rome, Italy in 1960. Four hundred athletes from 23 countries participated. Since its humble beginnings, the Paralympics has blossomed and grown in size and complexity. The Paralympic Games is part and parcel of the Olympic Games. The Seoul Olympic Organizing Committee organized the 1988 Paralympics to be held in the Olympic venues two weeks after the Olympic Games. Barcelona and Lillehammer followed suit hosting the summer and winter Paralympic Games respectively, utilizing a similar time frame.

THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE

With the Paralympic Winter Games now in full swing at three Utah venues, the Gould Auditorium at the University of Utah's Marriott Library will become an unofficial fourth venue this week, as it serves as the setting for lectures on the Paralympics and the disabled.
Today at 5 p.m., German sports science professor Gudrun Doll-Tepper will deliver a presentation titled "The Winter Paralympics Past, Present and Future."
And on Thursday at 7 p.m., Patricia Heberer, a historian at the United States Holocaust Museum, will offer a lecture titled "When Intolerance Prevailed: Nazi Persecution of Individuals With Disabilities."
This evening's lecture by Doll-Tepper, a part of the University of Utah College of Health's distinguished visiting lectureship, will present an overview of the Paralympics by a person who knows them intimately. Until recently, she served as chair of the International Paralympic Commit- tee's Sport Science, Research and Education Committee.
The Berlin scholar, who has produced dozens of publications on sport science and sports activity for the disabled, was elected in 1997 as president of the International Council of Sport Science and Physical Education. Her lecture is the last of 10 in the Olympic history lecture series launched at the university last year under the umbrella of the Tanner Humanities Center and coordinated by history professor Larry Gerlach.

THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE

The flame atop Rice-Eccles Stadium that radiated for most of the past six weeks is extinguished now.
But it will long illuminate the lives of Utahns as the symbol of the most spectacular chapter in the life of Salt Lake City, which has now earned an exalted place on the roster of Olympic cities.
The dousing of the Paralympic flame Saturday night marked the end of an Olympic carnival that really began for Utahns on Feb. 4, when the Olympic flame arrived in the state.
It continued through 40 days and nights a kind of Lenten observation in which the only habits Utahns gave up were their inhibitions and insecurities, as they welcomed the world with friendliness and pride.
While our newfound international friends focused on the city and the state for the 17 days of the Olympic Games, this has really been a six-week-long event for Utahns. It comprised the 17 days of the Winter Olympics and the 10 days of the Paralympics, and both were spanned by the Olympic Arts Festival.
In the 41 days since the Olympic flame came to Delicate Arch and inspired torchbearer Forrest Cuch to say, "I was soaring up there with the eagles," either the Olympic or Paralympic flame has been burning in Utah for all but four days. Among U.S. cities, only Atlanta in 1996 had attempted an Olympic commitment of such length; only Salt Lake City has succeeded so well, with its fire conquering the cold of winter.

Olympic Factsheets Paralympics What are the Paralympic Games? They are the Olympic equivalent for the world's top athletes with disabilities. The Paralympic Games recognise the participants' athletic achievements rather than their disabilities. Athletes at the Paralympics include paraplegics, tetraplegics, amputees, blind and cerebral palsied individuals, "les-autres" and those with an intellectual disability. The Paralympics are held every four years, just after the Olympic Games and at the same venues. The name 'Paralympic' comes from the Latin PARA, meaning 'WITH". History of the Paralympic Games In 1944 the British Government set up a spinal injuries centre for ex-servicemen headed by Sir Ludwig Guttman at Stoke Mandeville Hospital. As part of their therapy, patients were introduced to a number of sports and in July, 1948 a sports competition involving patients from various rehabilitation centres took place. These were the first Stoke Mandeville Games. Three years later, competitors from Holland appeared at the Games and the international movement, now known as the Paralympics, was born. In 1976 Sir Ludwig succeeded in introducing the concept of the Winter Paralympics in which 30 nations now compete. When are the Paralympics?

He received the Olympic Book of the Year Award in 1989 for The Olympic Myth of Greek Amateur Athletics Professor Young has had a lifelong interest in sports and is a specialist on the ancient Greek poet Pindar, who often included athletes among his topics. Young is one of a small group of Olympic historians whose work has changed our understanding of the history of the modern Olympic movement. Before the work of Professor Young, most historians gave credit for the idea to revive the modern Olympic movement to French nobleman Baron Pierre de Coubertin in the 1890s. But Young serendipitously discovered volumes of documents in Much Wenlock, England, that changed the history of the modern Olympic movement.

A look back at the Sydney Olympics and Paralympics The Sydney 2000 Olympic Games

The Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, in the words of IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch, were "the best games ever". Held in Sydney from 15 September until 1 October 2000, the Games were a spectacular success. Performances at the Opening and Closing Ceremonies celebrated Australia's history and culture. The games were declared open by the Governor General of Australia, Sir William Deane; the flame was lit by Indigenous Australian athlete Cathy Freeman; the Olympic Oath was spoken by triple gold medallist and Hockeyroo Rechelle Hawkes; and the Officials' oath was pronounced by water polo official Peter Kerr. In a symbol of the power of the Olympic Movement, South and North Korea marched together under one flag in the Opening Ceremony, and four athletes from the newly independent nation of East Timor took part under the Olympic flag.
In all some 10,651 athletes (4,069 females and 6,582 males) from 199 nations competed in 28 sports and 300 events. The 2000 Australian team was the largest to ever represent Australia in Olympic competition; 629 athletes competed in Sydney, surpassing the 424 who competed at the Atlanta Games in 1996. The participation of the Olympic athletes of all nations was supported enthusiastically by packed audiences at every event, appreciating their sportsmanship and spirited competitiveness.
