History
Cycling dates back to the early 1800s, but the sport really took off in 1839 when Scottish blacksmith Kirkpatrick Macmillan invented the pedal and crank system to power the machines. The next major advance came around 50 years later with the invention of gears and chains. In between times, in 1868, the first recorded cycling competition took place: a road race in Paris. Cycling has always been popular, as a recreational activity, a sport and a means of transport.

Thursday, July 13, 2000 PROFILE: Carol Montgomery Montgomery ready to make Canadian Olympic history
By DONNA SPENCER
Canadian Press
Carol Montgomery's heart has always been in running.
She may be a medal threat in the women's Olympic triathlon in Sydney, but it's her 10,000-metre race on the track 11 days later that really has her pumped. "I don't have much chance of making the 10,000 final as a runner, but that's what I'm looking forward to almost more so than the triathlon," said the 34-year-old, who will be the first Canadian to compete in two different sports at the same Olympics.

Athletes with disabilities have been scooping up condoms at a record pace during their games in Sydney JAMES CHRISTIE TORONTO One of the messages of the Paralympic Games in Sydney is the need to get rid of barriers. Athletes with disabilities want to be seen the way Olympians are seen, as sport performers. Medical staff at the athletes' village report that Paralympians and Olympians are even on one score their demand for condoms. Wheelchairs and prostheses don't pose any barrier at all, it seems, as young, athletes driven by hormones have scooped up 50,000 condoms in the first eight days in the village. That equals about seven condoms an athlete or official staying at the Games village. Condoms and lubricants in an assortment of colours and flavours are dispensed from a giant goldfish bowl in the medical centre. It is being refilled every day.

This led to the creation of the San Francisco Bay Area Sports Organizing Committee (BASOC), in 1987, with Supervisor Quentin L. Kopp leading the effort as Chairman. BASOC remained active after the 1996 Games were awarded to Atlanta. Throughout the 1990s BASOC supported local youth and amateur sports programs and hosted international events including the 1992 World Figure Skating Championships and the 1994 men's and 1999 women's soccer World Cups. We now are proposing to host the 2012 Olympic Games.

Olympic Legacy Collection Launched
Utahns Asked to Donate Governor Mike Leavitt today kicked off an effort by the Utah State Historical Society to collect Olympic memorabilia. Residents are being encouraged to donate 2002 Olympic Winter Games and Paralympics artifacts for a comprehensive collection that will be shared and maintained as part of the state's historic record. "The Olympics touched all of us in many different ways and it is important to preserve items and document what happened here," said Leavitt, who donated a lantern from the Opening Ceremony, pins and items from the visit of President George W. Bush. "This collection will be a permanent record for future generations to enjoy." During a news conference at the Rio Grande Depot, Governor Leavitt and Max Evans, Director of the Division of State History and Utah State Historical Society, accepted donations of official uniforms, signs, jewelry, and even an Olympic torch. Contributions were made by state agencies, corporations, Salt Lake City, and residents. The Historical Society's collection will also include oral histories and photographs from people who participated in or witnessed the Olympic Torch Relay, the ceremonies, and the athletic and cultural events. "Olympic memorabilia held by private citizens will likely not be easily located for future exhibits or for research," says Evans. "Much of it will be sold and resold and will end up out of state. We are hopeful that Utahns and visitors to the state will donate items so we have a lasting collection right here in the host city."

Each Sonar team will receive a rating designed to equalize physical abilities among the teams; 2.4 Metre sailors compete as equals without ratings. (At the 1996 Paralympic Games in Lake Lanier, Georgia, sailing in Sonars served as an exhibition event and attracted 15 countries. All nations, with the exception of host country Australia, must qualify for entry in both classes for the Paralympic Regatta, which is scheduled for October 20-27, 2000, in Sydney, Australia. The qualification process is a result of entry limits set by the International Olympic Committee and the International Sailing Federation (ISAF).
