Media Release Twins, Triplets and More Tuesday March 6, 2001 Multiple Birth Awareness Week 11-18 March, 2001 Multiple Birth Awareness Week from 11-18 March, 2001 is a time to celebrate the uniqueness of multiple births and to promote awareness of the issues surrounding twins, triplets, quads and quins. South Australia has the highest rate of multiple births (according to the ABS birth statistics). Data from the Pregnancy Outcome Unit shows that: 3.1% of all births in SA resulted in multiple births in 1999 (1 in 65 are twins) In 1999, 282 sets of twins and 2 sets of triplets were born in SA The Women's and Children's Hospital delivers more multiple birth babies than any other hospital in South Australia: In 2000, an average of 10 sets of twins were born at the hospital each month, while 4 sets of triplets were delivered out of a total of 6 sets in the state. In 2001, 7 sets of twins were delivered in January, with a sudden increase to 15 sets in February. Multiple Birth Coordinator, Linda Jacobssen at the hospital says, “Having multiple babies can be a joyful and exciting time, but it can also be a time of mixed emotions and expectations. Both the parents and children in a multiple birth family have unique and special needs. “Parenting twins or more is not the same as parenting a single child, and family dynamics change dramatically.
