Mungo Park A beautifully sculpted statue of the explorer Mungo Park by Thomas Clapperton adorns one end of the High Street in Selkirk, and one of his friend, Sir Walter Scott adorns the other. Mungo Park was born at Foulshiels, near Selkirk, one of 14 children. He qualified as a doctor and firstly joined an expedition to Sumatra while still in his early twenties. Many expeditions followed and he died tragically whilst attempting to discover the source of the Niger. His botanical and geographical observations were invaluable at a time when little was known of the African interior. Park was a totally unpretentious individual much admired by Sir Walter Scott. Patients treated by cauterising suffered from high fever and their wounds were swollen and painful. His patients suffered little from pain and without swelling. He returned to Bathurst in 1805 with a party of 40 Britons to compete his exploration of the Niger. By the time he had reached Bamako some 29 had died from malaria and dysentery and all but four died before he set off downriver in a boat. In November he sent one of his guides back to Bathurst with his records to that date. He was never heard from again. Later explorers learnt that his party had been attacked along the river (perhaps for not offering tribune) and finally his boat had been ambushed and all drowned at Bussa Nigeria (about 700km from the mouth of the Niger or about 2500km along the river from Bathurst). His records of the middle section of the Niger had been lost. NZ writer Ruth PARK says he was an ancestor of hers. [DRD] PARK

MUNGO PARK EXPLORATORY PURSUITS DEATH
Mungo Park, an explorer who liked to tread the difficult path than the beaten track. He was a Scottish explorer who traversed all along the Niger River to find its origin. Braving the constantly warring tribes on the way, Mungo Park saw the origin of the river at the low granite hills near Sierra Leone, 150 miles form the Atlantic Ocean. If not an explorer, he would have been a farmer, but his insatiable urge to find the headwaters of the Niger River gave him horrific experiences along with name and fame. On his way towards the origin of the river, he asked about the course of the river from one of the natives; in a prompt reply, he said, "To the world’s end." Even at the cost of his money time and life, he moved on … giving a glare to the jungles of Africa thus declaring his commitment to discover the source of the Niger River. "Mungo Park" , 1p, 7¼x4. No place, no date. In full: Scottish surgeon and explorer Mungo Park (1771-1806) went to Africa in 1795 to explore the Niger River. He went 200 miles up the Gambia River upon arriving in present-day Gambia and then traveled east into unexplored territory. Park was captured by a local chief but escaped and returned to Scotland. His good friend Sir Walter Scott convinced him to return to Africa to uncover the secret of the mouth of the Niger River. In 1796, Park reached the Niger River at the town of Segou. After he traveled 80 miles downstream as far as Silla his supplies were exhausted. On January 31, 1805, Park set sail from Portsmouth, England to Africa, planning to navigate the Niger River from Segou to its mouth. It was to be his last voyage. On August 9th, he reached the town of Bamako. Park reached the town of Sansanding, where he planned to build boats to journey down the Niger, on September 27. On October 28, 1805, Alexander Anderson, the brother of Mungo Park's wife and most probably the

Sir Samuel White Baker

Sir Richard Francis Burton
Mary Henrietta Kingsley Mungo Park Sir Samuel White Baker Sir Samuel White Baker (1821-1893), was an English explorer of Africa. He became known as an expert on Egypt and Sudan chiefly through his two books, The Albert N'yanza, Great Basin of the Nile (1866) and The Nile Tributaries of Abyssinia (1867). He also wrote popular books on hunting and nature. Baker was born in London. During the late 1850's and early 1860's, he and Florence von Sass, whom he later married, explored the region of the White Nile, the Blue Nile, and the Atbara River in Africa. On March 14, 1864, Baker and his party found a great lake. The lake, which he named Albert Nyanza (now also called Lake Albert), lies between Uganda and Congo (Kinshasa) and is an important source of the Nile River. Baker was knighted in 1866. In 1869, Ismail Pasha, the ruler of Egypt, appointed him as governor general of Sudan, which was then controlled by Egypt. Ismail told Baker to eliminate the slave trade. Baker added new territory in Sudan for Egypt and defeated some prominent slave traders but failed to stop the slave trade. He returned to England in 1873.

Africa
By the late 1700's, Europeans were familiar with the coasts of Africa, but the interior of the continent remained a mystery to them. Penetration of the interior was difficult because of the harsh terrain in many places and the presence of deadly diseases, such as malaria and dysentery. Despite these obstacles, Europeans explored most of Africa south of the Sahara during the late 1700's and the 1800's. During the late 1800's, exploration was combined with conquest, and Europeans became the rulers of most of the African continent.
During the late 1700's and early 1800's, European explorers tried to solve a mystery that had puzzled geographers for centuries. Ancient writers had mentioned an important African river called the Niger. But they had not known where the river began, in what direction it flowed, and where it ended. In 1796, Mungo Park, a Scottish explorer, reached the Niger near Segou, in what is now Mali. He determined that it flows from west to east. In 1830, Richard Lemon Lander, a British explorer, sailed down the Niger to its mouth in the Gulf of Guinea. During the 1820's, Alexander Gordon Laing, a Scottish explorer, and Rene Caillie (ruh NAY cah YAY), a Frenchman, separately visited the city of Timbuktu, near the Niger in Mali.

Located just 90 miles from U.S. soil, Cuba is a paradox. Baseball, Chevys and rock 'n' roll are a resonant part of the culture, yet, on the flip side, possession of American currency can land a person in jail. The Parish in the United States.—The term “ parish “is not in use as a territorial designation except in Louisiana, the sixty parishes of ‘which correspond to the counties of the other states of the Union. In the American Episcopal Church the word is frequently used to denote an ecclesiastical district. AUTH0RITIEs.—The principal records from which information may be gained as to the oldest parochial system in England are the records called Nomina villarum, the Taxalio papae Nicholai made in 1291, the Nonarum inquisiliones relating to assessments made upon the clergy, the Valor ecciesiasticus of Henry VIII., the lay subsidies from the reign of Edward III. to that of Charles II., the hearth-tax assessments and the land-tax accounts. On the subject of the parish generally see Stubbs’s Constitutional History; Glen’s Parish Law; Steer’s Parish Law; Toulmin Smith’s work on the Parish; S. and B. PARISITE, a rare mineral, consisting of cerium, lanthanum, didymium and calcium fluo-carbonate, (CeF)zCa(C03)3. It is found only as crystals, which belong to the hexagonal system and usually have the form of acute double pyramids terminated by the basal planes; the faces of the hexagonal pyramids are striated horizontally, and parallel to the basal plane there is a perfect cleavage. The crystals are hair-brown in colour and are translucent. The hardness is 41/8 and the specific gravity 4~36. Light which has traversed a crystal of parisite exhibits a characteristic absorption spectrum. Until recently the only~ known occurrence of this mineral was in the famous emerald mine at Muzo in Colombia, South America, where it was found by J. J. Paris, who re-discovered and worked the mine in the early part of the 19th century; here it is associated with emerald in a bituminous limestone of Cretaceous age (see

He worked as a cartographer (mapmaker) for England's King Henry VIII, was a captain for Spain's King Ferdinand V, explored for England's King Charles V, and may have secretly explored for Venice. Sebastian Cabot's father was the explorer John Cabot Cabot searched for the Northwest passage across North America (1508). He began an unsuccessful trip around the world (1526-1529) in a voyage that supposed to sail to China and the Moluccas (the Spice Islands, in Indonesia), but he only made it as far as the enormous mouth of the Rio de la Plata (a river between Argentina and Uruguay in South America). Later, he began to work for the English again (for King Charles V), searching for a water passage across the north of Asia around 1553.
