Help Us Ease the Burden; Find a Cure. We are three students of the University of British Columbia striving to raise awareness for Parkinson's Disease. We are committed to bike the length of Canada (from UBC to Halifax), which is approximately 6,500 km. We have recently been completely sponsored by ADT Security which will allay any financial burden for ourselves. However, this endeavor will be very draining physically, and metally; we are committed to meet the challenge. Our main goal is to raise donations for the PSC Our Pit Night for Parkinson's, held on May 24th, was a great time and raised a total of $1,300!! Thanks to all the people who came out and supported the cause. Clearly, the support precluding the ride has been outstanding, but we will continue to work for donations during the month and a half ride en route to Halifax. The following is a detailed description of why we are undertaking this trip. We have all been touched by this unfortunate disease, please help us fulfill our dream; we want to bring hope, and raise awareness; we want to help ease the burdern; find a cure. Contribute to our endeavour in 2 ways!

A Pathway Towards Cures for Parkinson's and Cancer
    http://www.ParkinsonsChat.com
11-06-2002 - Researchers studying the Hedgehog signaling pathway have identified small molecules that could form the foundations of exciting new treatments for Parkinson's disease and certain cancers.
New research published in Journal of Biology - the open access journal for exceptional research - has identified small molecules that are able to stimulate or block the Hedgehog signalling pathway, which is essential to the development, maintenance and repair of cells in the human body. The potential of these molecules to be used as drugs to treat both degenerative diseases and cancer is exciting as their small size may allow these molecules to enter all parts of the body and cross the blood brain barrier, eliminating the need for injections of therapeutics directly into the target site.
The Hedgehog signaling pathway is crucial to the development of healthy animals as well as the maintenance and repair of adult cells. Hedgehog genes were first identified in the fruitfly, and were so called because fly embryos with a defect in this gene were covered in bristles. The central role of the Hedgehog signalling pathway in the regulation of the growth and division of specific types of cells makes it of great interest to researchers investigating diseases like Parkinson's that are characterised by a lack of particular cells as the central nervous system degenerates.
Finding drugs that can stimulate the Hedgehog signaling pathway and lead to the production of new cells could potentially cure this disease. It is also hoped that by developing drugs that block the Hedgehog signalling pathway researchers will be able to induce the regression of tumours in patients with certain cancers that depend on this pathway (specifically, basal cell carcinoma and medulloblastoma).

Weight Control UNDERSTANDING PARKINSON'S DISEASE Parkinson's disease is a progressive disorder of the central nervous system that affects over 1 million people in the United States. The symptoms usually begin between the ages of 50 and 70. The onset of Parkinson's disease is gradual, so symptoms may go unnoticed until the advanced stage. Symptoms will continue to worsen until severe disability occurs. SIGNS OF PARKINSON'S DISEASE tremors, usually starting in one hand sluggish responses muscular rigidity soft, slow speech difficulty walking fixed facial expression staring, unblinking eyes open mouth with drooling greasy scaling facial skin stooped posture depression or dementia CAUSES DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT The underlying cause of Parkinson's disease seems to be a deficiency in dopamine, the chemical that plays an important role in the transmission of nerve impulses in the brain. A tiny portion of the brain where dopamine is produced begins to degenerate. It's not yet known why this deficiency occurs. Parkinson's disease is incurable, but physical therapy, medications, surgery and emotional support can help slow and reduce the severity of the disease. DON'T BE FOOLED There are conditions that mimic Parkinson's disease and make diagnosis difficult at times. Brain tumors or repeated head injuries often lead to a similar disruption of the nervous system. Strong tranquilizers and a few illegal drugs can also trigger Parkinson's-like symptoms.

    Help taking a walk
Sending electrical impulses deep into the brain of patients with advanced Parkinson's disease can eliminate or reduce the debilitating symptoms. Much like a pacemaker for the brain, the implanted device can help patients whose symptoms are not adequately controlled by the medications such as levodopa. University of Iowa Health Care neurosurgeon Kenneth Follett,M.D., has used deep brain stimulation for several years to help Parkinson's patients. For patients with Parkinson's disease, the small surgical implant means a big difference in their lives. One patient reported that prior to surgery he couldn't pour water from one glass to another without spilling most of it. After the surgery, the water went from glass to glass with no spills. Another patient was asked to walk down the hall with the implant turned on. He walked down the hall and back and there was no detectable difference in his walk than anyone else. When asked to take the same walk with the implant turned off, tremors were so severe he could not take a step, let alone walk down the hall.
