I can teach your class or your school Mediation skills. The class only program will be like a course that the students would take. They would learn how to handle conflict in a way that would fit their age level. In the all-school level, I would establish a program that would speak to grades 1 through 12, depending on your school. This program would include teaching the children how to mediate with their peers. Then I would teach the teachers about Mediation and how they can man the program themselves without my assistance. My experience has taught me that this is usually a three year program. PEER (SCHOOL) MEDIATION MY TRAINING IN THIS AREA
  • Basic 40-hour training at Notre Dame in South Bend, IN
MY EXPERIENCE IN THIS AREA As Executive Director of Nueces County Dispute Resolution Services, I established a multi-year contract with the Corpus Christi Independent School District which is still in place. First, conflict management skills were taught in all classes. Then students were elected in each class to be Mediators. We then taught the elected children in each school how to mediate their peer's conflicts. This was a 9 to 12 hour process. Next, we held a 36-hour Training of Trainers where we taught the teachers how to teach the children these skills. Our intent with the teachers was to teach them this program so it could be firmly established in their school. They, then, would no longer need us, thus allowing them autonomy.

Conflict Resolution Education Workshops Basic Peer Mediation: Conflict Resolution in Schools In peer mediation programs, selected students are trained to serve as neutral third parties to mediate disputes among their peers. The escalation of conflicts and, consequently, the need for serious disciplinary action are often averted when peer mediators help other students to communicate and find resolution to their conflicts. Peer mediation programs:
  • teach students to view conflict as a natural part of life teach students to solve their own problems through improved communication, critical thinking and negotiation skills reduce the time teachers and administrators spend on discipline reduce the number of detentions and suspensions promote intercultural understanding foster a climate within the school that is conducive to learning
This workshop explores the development of peer mediation programs in schools. It will teach the peer mediation process which involves: understanding origins and responses to conflict, role of the mediator, communication skills and anger management, and the six-step process used to resolve disputes. This training equips educators with the knowledge and skills to plan, implement (including training of peer mediators) and maintain a peer mediation program for the school.

Peer mediation is a negotiation-based strategy, in which students help to resolve conflicts among their peers. Students apply peer mediation strategies to help keep minor school conflicts from escalating into more serious incidents. Over time, effective peer mediation programs teach students alternatives to violence for solving personal problems or resolving interpersonal conflict. What is "peer mediation," and where did it come from?
In any mediation process, an impartial third party helps two or more disputants come to a win-win, rather than a win-lose, resolution of conflict. In peer mediation, student mediators use an interest-based negotiation procedure, along with communication and problem-solving strategies, to help their peers settle conflicts without confrontation or violence. Peer mediation grew out of programs developed by child advocates and attorneys in the 1970s and 80s, such as Children's Creative Response to Conflict, developed by the Quaker Church; Resolving-Conflict Creatively; and the Community Boards Conflict Managers Program in San Francisco (Johnson and Johnson). How has peer mediation been used?

"Without training in negotiation, students appear to resolve most conflicts by either withdrawing or forcing a solution. A well-conducted peer mediation program can teach students alternative strategies to aggression and withdrawal for settling conflicts. ... This can lead to improved school climate, and even decreased office referrals and suspensions. Yet peer mediation is complex; in order to be successful, there must be adequate planning and especially training of mediators. ... With adequate attention to details, peer mediation appears to be a promising tool that, used as part of a broader program, can help teach students methods to settle their conflicts without resorting to violence."

American schools share the one critical factor creating interpersonal conflict: they are full of human beings, immature human beings at that. Interpersonal conflicts rob classrooms of important instructional time as teachers step in to resolve issues. Deans, counselors, and vice principals find that conflicts divert a substantial amount of their time to resolving disputes or dealing with the aftermath. Lacking the tools to resolve conflicts, students get into trouble by escalating differences. Valuable time and emotional energy are drained when learning takes a back seat to conflict. In response to the increasingly violent resolutions of interpersonal conflicts between students, most schools have adopted violence prevention programs. Among the most popular are peer mediation programs. Peer mediation helps to teach students that there is an alternative to violence, that talking out conflicts in a civil, respectful manner can work no matter your age or your level of anger. It also moves the responsibility for resolving the matter from the school's adults to the students actually involved. The program described by the Johnsons in the following article is one of the best mediation programs.

    BY NANCY M. KAPLAN
Students can learn and teach the valuable conflict resolution skills that are necessary for reaching mutually agreeable solutions to disputes and for creating lifelong benefits.
    Student Mediation:
    Opportunity and Challenge
Most adults have been taught either by example or by instruction that confrontation or avoidance are effective ways to resolve conflicts. When these methods fail, parties that disagree often turn to the adversarial process in which each side tries to prove in a court of law that its position is right, and a judge rules on the matter and imposes a decision upon the disputing parties. Many people are beginning to realize, however, that there are benefits to settling one's own disputes.Furthermore, it is becoming increasingly apparent that disputes settled by judges or arbitrators often create even more dissension and animosity between the parties than did the original issue. Mediation as a means of resolving conflicts has gained credibility and acceptance in many areas of society, ranging from divorcing couples to warring nations. Teaching young people in school to use conflict resolution skills is producing significant results in reducing school confrontations and violence.Mediation training conveys the concept that each person is responsible for resolving disputes in a rational, peaceful manner. To young people who have not been reared in the tradition of solving conflicts through confrontation, avoidance or arbitration, mediation makes sense.

Mediation is one form of conflict management that is getting widespread attention in schools across America. Mediation involves a neutral third person, called a mediator, who assists the disputants in resolving their problem with the consent of all parties. It offers a risk free way to settle disputes for the parties involved in the dispute. No agreement, no deal.

PEER MEDIATION Conflict in human relationships is inevitable. The Peer Mediation Program at Maple Grove Junior High is designed to help students identify, negotiate, and develop solutions to conflicts that arise during the school day. The program revolves around the belief that students can learn skills to resolve conflicts in a constructive manner. The goals of the mediation program are to: Teach students alternative means of managing anger, resolving conflict, and reaching an agreement that addresses the interests of both sides. Teach students to take responsibility for their actions. Teach students lifelong skills in successfully dealing with conflict and anger. Improve school climate by promoting a positive school environment where every student feels accepted and comfortable. Through mediation we also strive to open communication between staff and students. To allow individuals within the building an opportunity to resolve a dispute(s) (staff and students). The Maple Grove Junior High staff holds high expectations for students. As a school we insist that students seek help in resolving conflicts from an adult or through mediation instead of resorting to harassment or violence.

The Benefits of Peer Mediation Educators who have implemented peer mediation programs attribute many benefits to them. Hundreds of educators, separated by many miles and vastly different circumstances, report similar experiences. Although it is essential to be cautious because most of these claims are unsubstantiated and based on anecdotal evidence, it is likely that peer mediation programs have some degree of positive impact on all of the areas listed below.
    • Peer Mediation Resolves Student Conflicts.
The most fundamental benefit of peer mediation is that it effectively resolves student conflicts. Close to 90 percent of all mediation sessions result in an agreement that satisfies not only the parties, but teachers, administrators, and parents as well. And when students choose to end a conflict in mediation, it is resolved for good. This is because mediators encourage their peers to discuss all issues in dispute, not only the precipitating incidents. Even in cases where written agreements do not result, parties often learn enough about the situation to defuse their conflict.

In an effort to deal with violence and the larger issue of youth conflict, the Harris County Department of Education has instituted a form of conflict management, called peer mediation, that empowers the youth to resolve their own conflicts. Jackson allers reports STORY: "If it works like it should...we'll stop spending our time and our money worrying about how many prisons we can build and how many people we can put away, which is a crisis at this point, and start working on the real problem and that is giving the children that become those adults a better way to deal with crisis and conflict so that they don't have to become the adults that we end up having to spend money on building prisons for." Judge John Coselli of the 125th Civil District Court weighing in on the potential benefits to Harris County's peer mediation program. S.R.C. Training (Only a Victorian program) The program is provided as a one day practical workshop that will allow students, selected onto the SRC to participate in a series of activities that will assist them in supporting each other and understanding more clearly the different role and functions of an SRC. Coming onto an SRC for the first time can seem a highly daunting task and often one which may in its first appearance seem somewhat bewildering. This preventative program assists students to work through the anxieties of coping with this new responsibility within the school community.
