On October 9, 1995, the Board of School Directors of the Fox Chapel Area School District held its regular monthly meeting. President Nancy Jane Edelman called the meeting to order at approximately 7 p.m. Also in attendance were Vice President William L. Pardini, III; William P. Bresnahan, J.D.; Charles E. Davidson, J.D.; George F. Dieffenbach, Ed.D.; Frank C. Gennaccaro; Verne C. Koch; Joseph L. Montemurro; and Garry A. Nelson, J.D.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES -
Approved the minutes dated September 11, 1995. GUESTS (10/2)
The Board presented High school art teacher Russell Kight with a plaque for being named the 1995 Outstanding Secondary Art Educator of the Year by the Pennsylvania Art Education Association. Mr. Kight, who has been teaching in the district for 32 1/2 years, was nominated for the award by two of his colleagues, Patricia Norkus and Ron Frank.
The following high school students attended the Pennsylvania Governor's Schools of Excellence and received Certificates of Merit from the Board: Lauren Siegel Health Care;

September 13, 1999 ROLL CALL PUBLIC COMMENTS Information
Additionally, Fox Chapel Borough Mayor Harry W. McLaughlin, Jr. presented a proclamation at the in-service on behalf of local municipal officials and all the residents of the six communities which comprise the Fox Chapel Area School District. The proclamation addressed the fact that a strong school system is essential to the continued viability of a municipality and produces committed and responsible citizens. The proclamation commended the Board of School Directors, the administration, and the staffs of all six schools in the district "for their commitment to excellence on behalf of their students and the entire community." The proclamation was signed by Ben F. Killian, mayor of the Borough of Aspinwall; Thomas M. Smith, mayor of the Borough of Blawnox; McLaughlin; Jeffrey D. Peck, mayor of the Township of Indiana; Denis J. Meinert, president of the O’Hara Township Council; and Donald C. Schubert, Jr., mayor of the Borough of Sharpsburg. The district also received a letter from U.S. Secretary of Education Richard W. Riley which was shared at the August 25 opening in-service. The letter commended the district for its Blue Ribbon designations at all six schools. In the letter Riley stated, among other things, "The remarkable success of your schools proves that with a supportive community behind them, our schools can provide every child an excellent education.....Blue Ribbon Schools across the country serve their communities by preparing young students to meet the challenges of the next century.     The Penn community is putting together a special day of activities for students, faculty, staff and alumni on September 11. Everyone in the Penn family is invited to campus for the day to volunteer or participate in a number of different activities. Highlights include an academic panel, performing groups, a blood drive, a community sculpture project, a memorial room, an organ concert, and a vigil to end the day.
    TRIO OF HONORS

    Three Penn scholars have been elected to the nation's most prestigious academies. Robert Boruch, Trustee Professor of Education and professor of statistics, has been named a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Penn scientists Tom Lubensky and Alan MacDiarmid have been elected members of the National Academy of Sciences.
    SINGAPORE MINDSHARE
    Penn is gearing up to host as many as 30 undergraduates from the National University of Singapore (NUS) this coming year. Called the "NUS College in Philadelphia," the new initiative will enroll students in the School of Engineering and Applied Science and offer internship opportunities at companies in the Philadelphia area.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION The Pennsylvania (PA) Consortium, three Pennsylvania institutions of higher education, University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania State University, and Lincoln University, formed a collaborative partnership to establish academic linkages with the University of the North in the Northern Province of South Africa. The main goal of the academic linkage program is to strengthen the institutional capacity of the University of the North to deliver quality service, improve teaching and learning and to conduct appropriate research to improve the quality of life in the Northern Province and South Africa. Combining their energies so that a broad span of complementary programs and faculties are available to the University of the North will allow all four institutions to:
  • Serve the citizens of our respective regions by providing an education that will provide opportunities for students to become more productive members in society.
