Geography
The Great Lakes Plain meets the Appalachian Plateau in the extreme northwestern part of the state. The Appalachian Plateau stretches across the western and northern sections of Pennsylvania and covers more than half the area of the state. The Allegheny Mts. line the eastern edge of the plateau and run southwest to northeast, overlooking the Great Appalachian Valley. The Jacks, Tuscarora, and Blue Mts. comprise a ridge and valley section bordered by the Great Appalachian Valley to the southeast and east. The Piedmont Plateau gives way to the Atlantic Coastal Plain in the extreme southeastern portion of the state. In the east Pennsylvania is drained by the Delaware and the Susquehanna river systems; in the west by the Allegheny and the Monongahela rivers, which join at Pittsburgh to form the Ohio River; and in the central part by the West Branch of the Susquehanna, which crosses the state and empties into Chesapeake Bay. These turbulent streams and rivers have cut beautiful water gaps, natural passageways for roads and rail lines.

Pennsylvania Geography Bee: Homeschoolers Place Well from Susan Richman Ever wonder which US state capital, founded as a gold-rush town, is not linked to the rest of its state by roads? Or can you name which African country borders both the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea? How are you at naming the large island country off the east coast of Africa that is one of the world’s leading producers of natural vanilla? If you’re curious about such things, you’re made for the National Geographic Society’s Geography Bee— and it’s terrific to see how many homeschoolers all across PA took part in this super opportunity for students in 4th to 8th grades. My daughter Hannah (6th grade) and I ventured to Harrisburg to watch the state finals this year, on April 9, 1999— Hannah’s a real geography fan (and hopes to eventually make it to the state level for competition!), and we had heard that several homeschoolers we knew had made it to the state bee, and we just hoped to cheer them all on. What a happy surprise it was to find out there were actually eight homeschoolers participating in the State Geo Bee— more than have ever made it there before! All day long we practically felt we were at Homeschoolers Excellence Day, as we kept running into more and more homeschoolers— it was so encouraging to see so many friends of the kids participating.

The great forests and lush vegetation that once covered the entire state were transformed during the Carboniferous period into deposits of anthracite coal in the northeast and extensive bituminous beds in the west. Large areas of woodland remain and, in some isolated sections, have retained an almost primitive wildness. Of the many historic sites and parks that have been preserved, those under Federal ownership include Fort Necessity National Battlefield, Gettysburg National Military Park, and Independence National Historical Park (see

Quantity: KIDS LOVE PENNSYLVANIA: A Parent's Guide to Exploring Fun Places in Pennsylvania With Children... Year Rould! by George Zavatsky, Michele Zavatsky. This is a great title for homeschooling in Pennsylvania. Here is your guide to all the great historic and cultural sites to visit as you fulfill the requirement for Pennsylvania history. Years ago we carried a title that featured places in Philadelphia and that was one of our top sellers. However, that went out of print, and we had nothing to replace it until I found Michele's guide at the CHAP Curriculum Fair this year. Read the author's comments. Quantity: ALL ABOUT PENNSYLVANIA This history workbook for 3rd-4th grades introduces such things as the state's flag, resources, rivers and important historical figures using puzzles, games, activities and short reading passages.
