Brief History
The land occupied by the old part of the reservation
belonged to the British crown.
The first settlement probably dates from 1723,
when a royal grant was made to Charles Congreve.
Another portion of the reservation was patented to
John Moore in 1747.
Although West Point had been occupied continuously
by troops since 1779, it did not become government
property until 1790, when at the request of its owner,
Stephen Moore, congress appropriated the money
for its purchase. Subsequent acquisitions were made from time to time until by 1943 the reservation comprised approximately 14,000 acres. At the outbreak of the Revolutionary War, both the colonists and the British realized the importance of gaining possession of the Hudson river valley, and West Point became the strategic key to its defense. General Washington established his headquarters there in 1779. In I780 Maj. Gen. Benedict Arnold, who was then in command at West Point, attempted to betray it to the British; but his treason was discovered and he fled to the enemy.

Carson Long Military Institute
200 North Carlisle St. PO Box 98
New Bloomfield, PA 17068-0098
School History
Carson Long Military Institute is a direct descendent of Bloomfield Academy which was founded in 1837. It was started by Robert Finley in New Bloomfield, Pennsylvania as a Latin school with only six students. In 1840 the school was moved two blocks up the hill to its present location. The first original school building was built in the same year and is still in use as a reception hall and a museum. In 1842 the trustees decided to make the Academy a coeducational boarding school. For a short period of time in the early 1850's, the school was purchased and operated by the Perry County Commissioners. During the second half of the 1800's, the Latin academy added a Normal School, which was a training school for teachers. In 1914 the school was purchased by Theodore K. Long, who graduated from Bloomfield Academy and Yale, and who became a prominent Chicago lawyer and city councilman. In 1916 he renamed the school Carson Long Institute as a living memorial to his son, William Carson Long who died at an early age. At that time the Academy became an all boys school accepting girls as day students only for about four more years. After World War I, Edward L. Holman, a nephew of Colonel Long came back to his alma mater and started military training in 1919. He also started a life time of 61 years to build the school into what it is today. In 1971 he became the Board Chairman and his son, Colonel Carson E. R. Holman, a graduate of Carson Long and West Point then becameand is nowthe President of the School.

the nation, Carlisle Barracks has been home to many military schools and has supportedoperations to protect settlers in Central pennsylvania and deployments
    http://dde.carlisle.army.mil/main/history.htm
As the oldest active military post in the United States, Carlisle Barracks is among the most historic of American military installations. During more than two centuries of distinguished service to the nation, Carlisle Barracks has been home to many military schools and has supported a variety of operations and civilian activities. In the 1700s the Barracks supported operations to protect settlers in Central Pennsylvania and deployments during the French and Indian Wars. It also served as a key installation during the War of Independence. The Hessian Powder Magazine Museum, built in 1777 by Hessian prisoners , survives today as a reminder of the Barracks’ role in that seminal period of American history. Carlisle Barracks later served as a base of operations for President Washington during the Whiskey Rebellion of 1794. In the 1800s, the Barracks served as a recruiting and basic training center, and subsequently became the home to the Cavalry and Infantry School. During the Civil War, Confederate General J.E.B. Stuart, a graduate of the Cavalry and Infantry School, shelled and burned Carlisle Barracks while supporting Confederate forces at Gettysburg. During the latter half of the 19th century, the Barracks served as the home of the Carlisle Indian School. This noble social experiment was designed to educate rather than subjugate Native Americans. The highlight of the period was the unparalleled athletic achievements of Jim Thorpe and Coach Pop Warner. The Indian School closed in 1917 when the post was turned back to the Army for use during World War I. From that time until 1951, the Barracks served as the home to many Army service schools including the Adjutant General, Chaplains, Information, Security, Military Police, and Medical Field Service Schools.

Soldiers build schools, provide medical care in El Salvador
by Capt. Teresa Nelson El Salvador (Army News Service, April 14, 2000) Service members from throughout the United States have been deploying since February to El Salvador to participate in Nuevos Horizontes 2000, a training mission that involves about 2,000 U.S. service members. Active Army and Army Reserve, Army and Air National Guard, Marine Corps Reserve, Navy and Air Force personnel are participating in the training exercise as part of Joint Task Force Santa Fe to provide engineer and medical projects across the Northern Department of Chalatenango in El Salvador. From February until May, more than 50 units across the nation and Puerto Rico will muster for two-week increments to practice their military skills in a real-world scenario to better prepare them for mobilization. "Nuevos Horizontes provides construction engineers, military police, medical units and other combat service support units with the best possible skills training and small unit battle-focused training," said Col. Clyde M. Leavelle, task force commander. "There are no simulations; it borders between training and operations and it's all done in a foreign culture and a joint/combined atmosphere." The American engineers assigned to build the schools and drill the wells work side-by-side with the Comando de Ingenieros de la Fuerza Armada (CIFA) Salvadoran military engineers. Both the CIFA and U.S. engineers have varying degrees of knowledge and expertise, depending on background and rank.

By December 1941, there were only a handful of Japanese-American students at Penn (as well as a single student from Japan, Noboru Kamirya, who was listed tactfully as "withdrawn as of December 6, 1941"). On December 9, 1941, the day after Congress declared war, the University was contacted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, to whom it offered the same information on its Nisei students that it had previously sent to Naval intelligence. In his letter to the FBI, William H. DuBarry, University vice president, referred to the Nisei students as "Japanese."
    The Bennett News,
She speaks fondly of her student days at Penn. "There were some good restaurants around campus. My favorite was called the Lido. I made friends through the Christian Association, which was a center for socially minded students, and through other student activities," she says.
In early 1944, Nakano filed an application to the graduate school. The philosophy department voted to recommend her for a scholarship, which was then approved by the Graduate Council. Soon after, however, the dean of the graduate school, Dr. Edwin Williams, told Nakano that University policy required the school to deny her application. Nakano remembers that she initially accepted the rejection without protest, believing that the University was under explicit military orders. "I thought that it was a bureaucratic administrative decision," she says. She proceeded to apply to other graduate schools.
