    PTA vs PTO
What is the difference between a PTA (Parent-Teacher Association) and a PTO (Parent-Teacher Organization)? Why are we a PTA? Before we get to the differences we should first acknowledge the similarities. Both PTAs and PTOs bring parents and educators together for the benefit of the children. They share many of the same goals and use many of the same strategies. A PTO is an independent unit, not associated with the State and National PTAs. As an independent unit a PTO has more flexibility in its charter, bylaws and organization. It also does not have to pay dues to any State or National organization. A PTA is affiliated with both the State and National PTA and pays dues to both. In return we receive a wealth of information, resources, and training opportunities from them. As members of a group with affiliates at schools throughout Pennsylvania and the Nation, we gain a stronger voice in influencing public policy. In addition, through the State PTA we receive insurance that covers all PTA-sponsored events. The school’s insurance does not cover these events and PTOs must obtain very expensive policies or risk being without insurance, a decision that places all members at risk. Both PTAs and PTOs are filled with dedicated citizens proud of all they do to help all our children. At Norwin we feel that we gain much more from being a PTA than it costs us.

    What I Know Now
Be Cool. Chill Out. Refrigerate Promptly. F or decades, product sales have reigned as the fundraising method of choice for most small non-profit organizations. However, the choice of products available to the fundraising chairperson today has grown exponentially, reading like a What's What in consumer goods. In fundraising drives across the country, the ever-popular candy, magazines and wrapping paper are found alongside everything from non-perishable cheese and sausage to light bulbs, birdseed, fresh fruit, tee shirts and scads of gift items. Now refrigerated and frozen foods - from pizza and cheesecakes to cookie dough - are gaining popularity in the parade of products sold for fundraising purposes. These products bring with them a whole new set of distribution and handling considerations. As a fundraising decision-maker, your primary goal, of course, is to conduct a smooth, profitable fundraiser. But don't lose sight of the fact that the foods sold through a fundraising drive are still intended for people to eat and enjoy, safely. "There's a misperception that foods sold for fundraising purposes are indestructible," reports Jim Messina, a New Jersey-based supplier of frozen foods for the fundraising market. According to Messina and others in the business of manufacturing and distributing frozen cookie dough, cheesecakes, pizzas and other frozen food items, the parameters for preserving these increasingly popular fundraising items are no different from products purchased from the grocer. Tom Lundeen, another frozen food supplier based in Iowa agrees, "When you buy ice cream at the corner supermarket, you don't leave it in the trunk for two days."

Set against the backdrop of the Civil War, this is musical drama at its best. Professional actors, authentic period costumes, and original music to tell this inspiring story of courage, personal integrity, and how freedom begins with a simple act of kindness. To Lemuel, a young runaway slave who has been employed by a Quaker widow, life in Gettysburg is everything he had dreamt it would be until the Union and Confederate armies converge on his doorstep in July of 1863. Jacob McLain, a private in the Confederate Army, has come to Gettysburg "all fired up" for the showdown that would become the defining moment of the Civil War. It is Jacob's unlikely friendship with Lemuel that puts both boys in harm's way. Along with exposing conflicts between patriotism and pacifism, the play reveals to audiences the burden of families torn apart by differing beliefs.
