Percussion Instruments
Percussion instruments come in a wide variety of shapes and forms. One might suggest that any object could be used as a percussion instrument ... just bang on it! The more traditional members, however, can be roughly grouped as idiophones (xylophone, marimba, chimes, cymbals, gongs, etc.), membranophones (drums), aerophones (whistles, sirens), and chordophones (piano, harpsichord). We will consider only members of the first two groups above in this section. These instruments will typically not produce harmonic overtones, though a few partials can often be ``tuned'' to approximate integer ratios of a fundamental.
Idiophones
  • Vibrations of Bars:
    • Vibrations in bars are primarily one-dimensional. Longitudinal vibrations are harmonic with frequencies f n n v L L for n = 1, 2, 3, ..., where is the speed of sound in the rod, E is Young's elastic modulus, is the density, and L is the length of the rod. Longitudinal vibrations are much higher in frequency than transverse vibrations.

The percussion family is huge! It includes any instrument that produces sounds when it is struck, scraped or shaken. A percussionist in an orchestra may play as many as a dozen different instrument s, since different pieces of music need different kinds of percussion. Struck percussion instruments can be simple, such as a drum that you hit with the hand or with drumsticks. Or they can be as complex as a piano, which has 88 keys, three pedals, and lots of gadgets inside! Other percussion instruments that are struck to produce sound include the timpani , the xylophone cymbals , the triangle , the snare drum , the Bass Drum , woodblocks, gongs, and chimes. These are all used in the orchestra at one time or another. Percussion instruments that are scraped to produce a sound are a little less common in the orchestra, but you can find some kind of scraped instrument in almost every country in the world. The same goes for shaken percussion. Some shaken instruments u sed in the orchestra include tambourines and rattles. Cool kids play music!

The most varied assemblage of instruments in the orchestra, the percussion section is sometimes called the "hardware department." Some of the instruments have definite pitches like the timpani, glockenspiel and the xylophone. Some only contribute a pitchless sound, like the triangle, snare drum and cymbals. Primitive instruments like the gourd, rattle, and wood block are also used along with a variety of drums, gongs and chimes.

    Percussion Instruments
There is SO much more to the world of percussion than the snare drum and xylophone. Here are a few examples of some domestic and exotic percussion instruments.
    Pitched Percussion
The TIMPANI can be tuned to specific pitches. This instrument is commonly found in bands and orchestras. The GLOCKENSPIEL is normally made out of steel and is commonl known as "Orchestra Bells".
    Unpitched Percussion
The BASS DRUM is commonly found in bands and orchestras. The TAMBOURINE has small cymbal-like metal on the sides. The membrane stretched on the top of the round shell may be hit to make the metal cymbals ring. The CASTANETS are played with your fingers for special effects. The CYMBALS are made out of metal and make big, clashing sounds. The TRIANGLE is made out of metal and is normally played with a small metal stick and hung on a piece of string.

    SILVIA FOMINA - 1962 ARGENTINA - I.OPFERNACHT
The Argentine composer Silvia Fómina (1962) also appears as interpreter of her own compositions. Playing cello solo, she realized many premieres of contemporary compositions. In Germany Silvia Fomina received the scholarship for composition of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) for the term 1989/90 as well as the financial support of the Rotary-Club Berlin. Her compositions as well as her interpretations received the stimulus and the backing from the German cellist Siegfried Palm. Silvia Fomina obtained the scholarship of the Portuguese government in order to effectuate musical activities for the promotion of the cultural exchange in the field of contemporary music.
    I. Opfernacht for cello, piano and small percussion instruments; from the cycle The Seven Vespers This work is dedicated to the absent generation, the generation of young intellectuals (in the best creating sence), with whom I grew up in Argentina and who should have presented and expressed themselves after the nightmare of terror and death of the military government of 1976-1984. The wanted, silenced, censured, tortured, shot and destroyed generation. To these disappeared absent people and to the deep emptyness, their works which remain silent and forthcoming, I bring this homage, with clenched fists and grinding teeth. With closed eyes.

What would an exotica/space age pop site be without percussions? In music, any instrument whose sound is produced by a blow from another instrument or from a stick is a percussion instrument. Scientifically percussion instruments are classified as idiophones and membranophones . The idiophones are those which are made of a substance such as wood or metal, which vibrates when struck. Membranophones are those whose sound-producing agent is a stretched skin. Idiophones are tuned to definite pitches and include the Bell, the Xylophone, the Celesta, and the Glockenspiel. Those of indeterminate pitch include the Castanets, the Cymbals, the Gong, the Tambourine, and the Triangle. from "Around the World in Percussion," Billy Mure, Strand SLS 1021 Before the final selections were made, more than a hundred different drums were listened to analytically. Each had a different tonality and produced a different sound. Forty sizes of gongs were auditioned. Innumerable cymbals were tested. Each one was appraised for the musical seasoning that it might add to the finished product. from "Far Away Places," Enoch Light and his orchestra, Command RS822SD

Percussion And its influences by Holly Sundstrom

The sounds of life have a repetive rhythm to them such as waves beating upon the shore and a heart beat. All of these are the basis for using percussion instruments as a method to influence mood and emotion. In movies and games the beat of the drum or percussion instruments are used to elicit excitation or an increased rate of heart beat which can be influenced by listening to the rate and speed of the accompanying percussion instrument sounds.       This is how mood and emotion is often affected by the music in the background of a theatrical play, a musical composition or a movie. Teaching the affects of how such things are used to manipulate and influence your students in movies and other such presentations can help make your students be more aware of how their moods can be affected by such things as electronic games, movies, commercials, theatrical works, and music.       What can be done to teach such things is to have your students try to imagine what the sound of running would be and copy that by even just drumming very quickly upon their desks with their finger tips. Then having them drum very softly upon their desk tops to create the sound of someone walking quietly so as to not be discovered. Then having them slap their hands upon the desk top to make the sound of some sort of jumping action.       Have your children listen to the world around them to see what they can hear that has a repetitive sound and rhythm to it. Then have them try to copy that sound by tapping upon their desk tops.
