... Information on 50+ Perennials The new gardener is coming to rely on perennial flowering plants to a greater extent every year. This is natural, for these plants to possess qualities, which enable them to fill satisfactorily almost all-gardening needs. There is danger, however, that we may select too many plants of too many varieties and undertake to care for a larger garden than we can properly keep in the pink of condition. It is more reasonable to limit our attention to a few plants and then raise them wisely and well, rather than to spread our endeavors over too wide a field, and so, perhaps, reap only disappointment for our labor.
By limiting our selection of plants and the extent of our garden, however, we do not fail to achieve beauty and distinc-tion, for by selecting wisely we can get a great deal of variety and surely a large amount of enjoyment.

Quick Facts...
  • Choose your Garden location before designing it.
  • Consider sun, wind, soil type, soil amendments and water.
  • Plan the area to scale on paper.
  • Perennial beds are easier to maintain when easily accessible.
  • Consider the amount of time needed to maintain the Garden.
  • Prepare a list of desired perennials.
  • Add organic matter to improve soil aeration and drainage.
A well-designed perennial Garden can provide many years of beauty and enjoyment. Careful selection of plant materials and thoughtful planning can result in a full season of color. Perennials often require less maintenance than some annual flowers. Once established, they generally require less water than annuals and often have fewer pest problems. Perennial Gardens may serve as borders along a fence or property line, thus easing mowing, trimming and water requirements that a lawn may present in such areas. It is also visually pleasing to locate the Garden against a background such as a fence, wall, shrubs or evergreens.
Site Selection
Site selection is the first step in planning a successful perennial Garden. Take stock of your environmental conditions to see where an optimum site might be. Ease of access, proximity to outdoor living areas, and visibility from within the home are other factors to be considered. A perennial Garden may also be a focal feature in the landscape, unrelated to indoor living areas.

Book Reviews: Horticulture
The Well-Tended Perennial Garden: Planting and Pruning Techniques DiSabato-Aust, Tracy, 1998. ISBN 0-88192-414-8 (cloth US$29.95) 338 pp. Timber Press Inc., 133 SW Second Avenue, Suite 450, Portland, OR 97204-3527 - Go to a garden store in the spring and you're sure to overhear someone say, "I'm giving up on planting annuals every year; I'm going into perennial gardening." Surprise! Perennials also require work. There are many books on perennial gardening that cover garden design, soil preparation, and selection of materials but fall short on the matter of maintenance. Tracy DiSabato Aust in The Well-Tended Perennial Garden is one of the first perennial experts to focus a book on the hard work but in a way that gives the work a clear purpose, even an esthetic goal. Plant biologists who also enjoy perennial gardening as a hobby will be especially appreciative of the author's scientific approach to the subject. For many years Tracy DiSabato-Aust has been experimenting with various pruning, thinning, and division techniques to keep her perennial garden and those of her landscape clients in peak form. She not only uses pruning techniques to remove spent blooms or diseased plants but also to produce pleasing visual effects. For example, she explains how to cut plants back, even prior to anthesis, to extend their bloom period or to produce a layered effect in the garden, moving from low to medium to tall plants. Then there is the matter of cleaning up the perennial garden in autumn or spring. In the pages of this book you will learn the best time of year to cut back and/or divide most of the commonly grown perennials and some of the more unusual cultivars, too.

    Herb Gardening Perennial Information
Herb gardening is a vital and important part of perennial gardening. Herbs are after all, plants that gardeners have found a use for - medicinal, cosmetic or culinary or ornamental. It is the ornamental and culinary aspect that we want to focus on in these web pages. There are some great books on the cosmetic use of herbs for guys and I'll share some of my cooking recipes here on this site. Because I do like to cook with herbs as much as I enjoy growing them. My basil spahetti is famous (well, at least the kids really love it.) The recipe is here. Some of the best plants in the perennial garden are also considered herbs and their stories are found on the links below. While this is not a site about herbs, it is a site about perennials and herb gardening is a very important part of the perennial border. In general, there are a few things you need to know:
