(Homily Fourth Sunday, A)
It is good to be back in Holy Family after the two week visit to Asia. You have probably noticed the new vestments which are from the Philippines. It was a wonderful trip except for the disappointment of not being permitted to go to Vietnam*. We did, however, have a great experience in the Philippines and also got to spend some days in Taiwan and Bangkok. So much happened that I am sure I will be telling you about it during the coming year. This Sunday though I want to be brief since we are beginning Catholic Schools Week and our principal Mr. Stephen Morissette will be giving a presentation. Our Catholic School exists because of the Gospel call of Jesus. In today's reading of the Beatitudes we see how different we must be from the world around us. We want to help parents to raise their children with those values. It is sometimes so hard for parents. They can feel overwhelmed, for instance, by advertising which pressures their children to get certain brands of shoes and clothes. I saw a tragic example of that when I was in the Philippines. American style advertisements are constantly on television and billboards. One priest told us that children there, boys and girls, will actually prostitute themselves to get money to buy the right kind of clothes. The poison of our consumer society, what the pope calls the "culture of death," has spread thru the whole world.

This page presents some important features of the different regional cultures that make up the Filipino people according to ethnolinguistic classification. This grouping, however, does not mean that these cultures can be easily distinguished from one another. There are more things that these groups share than things that tell them apart. Approximately 150 languages spoken by different ethnolinguistic groups all over the Philippine islands. Three of these languages serve as regional lingua francas: Ilokano in Northern and Central Luzon; Tagalog in Southern, and parts of the Central regions of Luzon; and Cebuano in the Visayas, Mindanao and some areas in Palawan. Tagalog is the basis of the national language, Filipino, which is also one of the two official languages along with English. It also serves as the national lingua franca. There are eight major languages based on the number of speakers: Tagalog, Cebuano, Ilokano, Hiligaynon/Ilonggo, Waray, Bikolano, Pangasinense, and Kapampangan. Apart from the ethnolinguistic groups, a uniquely diverse culture has evolved in Northern Luzon and in Mindanao and the southern islands of the Philippine archipelago.

Tagalog Cebuano Ilokano REGIONS North Luzon Mindanao hide menu Search this Site for: Mindanao The large island of Mindanao and all the smaller islands and islets to the south, including the Sulu archipelago, are home to a diverse culture that cannot be adequately named. For convenience, the terms "the Philippine South" and "Southern Philippines" are sometimes resorted to. The cultural diversity of the region is the result of a large influx of migrants from the north over a long period of the region's history. Found here are three main cultural groups: the early Filipinos who belong to various indigenous tribes living in the highlands and remote areas of Mindanao, the Muslim Filipinos who were early converts to Islam and who regard the region as their traditional homeland, and the Christian Filipinos who founded settlements and communities in the course of their migrations from other parts of the country. The indigenous inhabitants generally shy away from the centers of population and find refuge in the quiet foothills of coastal and interior mountains. They are known today as "the cultural communities." Most of the indigenous groups in Mindanao speak a language belonging to one familythe Manobo language family. In many areas the dialects are mutually understandable, although in a few others only the formal structures are similar. The Manobo language family, moreover, is structurally related to the central and northern Philippine languages. This similarity links the Mindanao groups to the larger national population.

Many first generation childhood immigrants will get a kick out of WHY their parents do what they do and where it ALL comes from. This book touches on every aspect of Filipino culture and leaves no suprises of what to expect when first visiting the Philippines. And for those of you who think you know it all already, read this book - you may know it, but you may not know how to explain it..... Maraming Salamat sa Alfredo and Grace Roces! A Good Handy Guide I found this book to be a good and handy guide to understanding the culture of the Philippines as an Canadian-American married to a lady from the Philippines and a part time resident of DAVAO CITY about half the year, the information has proven useful. It certainly was well worth the small price I paid if only for the tips on understanding my IN LAWS! Anyways, a well worth read.

List Price: Our Price: Used Price: More Details from Amazon.com Amazon international Product Reviews: Excellent but what's with the cover? Having been raised in one of the remote barangays in one of the remote provinces in Philippines, went to college in the city, and currently living in the U.S., I can relate to most of the things discussed in this book and how foreigners react to them. I still find our culture fascinating and I wouldn't hesitate to explain this to a foreigner who's interested to listen. But why the choice for the cover? Wouldn't it be nice if you put a picture of a 'bayanihan' or a child giving a 'mano po' to an elderly, instead of a man in white mask with a San Miguel Beer and a cigarette in hand? I know 'Sinulog' in Cebu, 'Dinagyang' in Iloilo, and 'Ati-ati' in Aklan, but these festivals do not reflect the 'culture shock' that's discussed in the book. It might give an impression that there's a lot of 'voo-doo' practitioners in the Phillipines. Ok..ok...let's not just the book by it's cover...Excellent reading for your 'Americanized' kid or your American in-law.
