  • THE MACALESTER PHILOSOPHY
The cross country team is open to all students. We do not cut anyone from the team. Macalester College holds the philosophical belief that all students at Mac should have the opportunity to participate in athletics if they so desire. Macalester belongs to Division III of the NCAA and offers no athletic scholarships. However, a large percentage of Mac students receive financial aid. Financial aid is based upon need and academic excellence. At Macalester we believe the experience of being a college athlete is invaluable. We know the student-athletes develop their commitment, leadership and friendships through practice and competition. Academics are always first priority, and first year runners learn to balance their priorities with the help of the upper-classmen. Mac runners get stronger with each season. We focus on keeping runners healthy, getting stronger, and developing the mental skills to reach their potential. The close knit team develops a camaraderie that lasts long past college.

Liberalism
Liberalism can be understood as (1) a political tradition (2) a political philosophy and (3) a general philosophical theory, encompassing a theory of value, a conception of the person and a moral theory as well as a political philosophy. As a political tradition liberalism has varied in different countries. In England - in many ways the birthplace of liberalism - the liberal tradition in politics has centred on religious toleration, government by consent, personal and, especially, economic freedom. In France liberalism has been more closely associated with secularism and democracy. In the United States liberals often combine a devotion to personal liberty with an antipathy to capitalism, while the liberalism of Australia tends to be much more sympathetic to capitalism but often less enthusiastic about civil liberties. To understand this diversity in political traditions, we need to examine liberalism as a political theory and as a general philosophy . These latter two are the concerns of this essay.

General Information about Philosophy Courses
Discussion is the lifeblood of philosophy
, and our ways of teaching in the Philosophy Department are intended both to inform and guide students, and provide adequate time for debate and exploration of philosophical issues. There are two principal formats for the teaching of courses in the department. Some courses, such as the first-year Introduction to Philosophy course (PY111) and the core second-year course Early Modern Philosophy (PY205), are taught by means of a one-hour lecture which is supplemented by a one-hour back-up class, either immediately afterwards, or later in the week. Back-up class may be taught by the lecturer, by another member of staff or, in the case of PY111, by a graduate teaching assistant. The primary aim of the lecture is to convey the essential information and explanations which students require to understand the relevant course material. The primary aim of the class is to provide an opportunity for guided discussion, in which students can explore and exchange ideas with each other, and with the teacher taking the class. The majority of second and third year courses are taught by means of a weekly two-hour ‘lecture/seminar’. In this format, the teacher generally uses the first hour of the class to convey information and explanations, and the second for discussion. However, this format allows for a lot of flexibility, and often the division between the ‘lecture’ and ‘seminar’ aspects of the class is less rigid, and can be adapted to the needs of students.

Why the Eagle?
Eagles don't flock, they aren't big on following the crowd or the latest fads. They soar high in the air, getting a tremendous panoramic view of the world below. When they are hungry or want to feed their young, they hunt for their food, not waiting for something to happen so they can eat.
They are, perhaps, the most beautiful of all birds... not with the cosmetic plumage of the a peacock, but with the strength and grace of finely conditioned athlete. And... they exemplify the type of faith we all could use by putting their full weight, with confidence, on streams of air high above the earth. The eagle can't see the air, but he knows it's there!
So... we felt the eagle exemplified the qualities we are striving for and adopted the magnificent bird as the symbol of our company.

Philosophical writing is different from the writing you'll be asked to do in other courses. Most of the strategies described below will also serve you well when writing for other courses, but don't automatically assume that they all will. Nor should you assume that every writing guideline you've been given by other teachers is important when you're writing a philosophy paper. Some of those guidelines are routinely violated in good philosophical prose (e.g., see the guidelines on grammar , below).

Preamble of the Industrial Workers of the World
The working class and the employing class have nothing in common. There can be no peace so long as hunger and want are found among millions of working people and the few, who make up the employing class, have all the good things of life. Between these two classes a struggle must go on until the workers of the world organize as a class, take possession of the earth and the machinery of production, and abolish the wage system. We find that the centering of the management of industries into fewer and fewer hands makes the trade unions unable to cope with the ever growing power of the employing class. The trade unions foster a state of affairs which allows one set of workers to be pitted against another set of workers in the same industry, thereby helping defeat one another in wage wars. Moreover, the trade unions aid the employing class to mislead the workers into the belief that the working class have interests in common with their employers. These conditions can be changed and the interest of the working class upheld only by an organization formed in such a way that all its members in any one industry, or in all industries if necessary cease work whenever a strike or lockout is on in any department thereof, thus making an injury to one an injury to all.

Herbert Spencer (1864)
Laws in General
The recognition of Law being the recognition of uniformity of relations among phenomena, it follows that the order in which different groups of phenomena are reduced to law, must depend on the frequency with which the uniform relations they severally display are distinctly experienced. At any given stage of progress, those uniformities will be best known with which men's minds have been oftenest and most strongly impressed. In proportion partly to the number of times a relation has been presented to consciousness (not merely to the senses), and in proportion partly to the vividness with which the terms of the relation have been cognised, will be the degree in which the constancy of connexion is perceived. The succession in which relations are generalised being thus determined, there result certain derivative principles to which this succession must more immediately and obviously conform. First is the directness with which personal welfare is affected . While, among surrounding things, many do not appreciably influence us in any way, some produce pleasures and some pains, in various degrees; and manifestly, those things whose actions on the organism for good or evil are most decided, will

Dear Colleagues, Welcome you to the Web site of the St. Petersburg School of Religion and Philosophy (SRPh). The St. Petersburg School of Religion and Philosophy is an educational institution established in the early 1990s whose mission is to educate both Russian and foreign students in the liberal arts, (particularly those which were not addressed by the Soviet system.) As part of this mission (goal), the School conducts various educational exchange programs. Many of you are interested in Russian culture courses, and your institute may have members who need to acquire more knowledge of a second language, which will greatly enrich the potential and quality of academic life. SRPh offers courses in culture, history, literature, art, religion and philosophy, Russian Language (for beginners and advanced), together with very attractive entertainment and activity programs in Russia's most beautiful city - St. Petersburg. All participants will have the opportunity to explore the sights and churches of St. Petersburg and its environs, to meet students and professors from the SRPh, to be involved in intellectual exchanges, and to visit other cities of Russia. In addition, it is possible to customize participants' programs to include the particular cultural activities which interest them. To study abroad - and in particular, in St. Petersburg - is less expensive than you may think. For more information on our programs, please contact us at the e-mail address shown below.

The Philosophy Benchmarking Document
, prepared for the QAA in the UK, makes some attempt at answering the question. Other people have different answers. It is increasingly difficult to classify webpages. Some of the following, including ones highly regarded by Point Com and others, are high-minded rather than philosophical. Others are collections of connections. But since all such pages change quite rapidly, it seems impossible to pin them down. What was only a place where one changes trains may suddenly acquire an excellent cafe, or a specialist bookshop. What was merely high-minded or satirical may change itself (and even its readers' lives). Accordingly, this list is merely alphabetical. If you want to add to the collection, by writing your own, here are a few hints : above all, think what it is you want to do for the philosophical community! There is no point in duplicating effort.
