Our principle purposes are to create and maintain a hospitable environment for women faculty at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville by:
  • Promoting action to improve the status of women faculty. Serving as advocates for the interests of women faculty. Working with other campus groups to improve the status of UTK women. Ensuring that information concerning the status of women faculty is collected and distributed in timely fashion.
To facilitate networking and address issues of common concern to women faculty, we sponsor bi-annual get-togethers (typically a wine and cheese reception at the beginning of the fall semesterl and a luncheon at the end of the spring term), arrange workshops, and invite guest speakers from around campus and from other universities. Events we have organized include the following:
  • Four workshops on tenure and promotion Two campus-wide meetings on "Gender in the Workplace" with Vice-Chancellor John Peters A meeting with Provost Loren Crabtree, jointly sponsored with the Comission for Women, Women's Studies, and the AAUP, on "Transforming the University: Gender Equity and Diversity"

Wells Named Assoc. Dean at Law School
By Michael Seele
Chronicle Editor
Catharine Wells, a former Massachusetts assistant attorney general and University of Southern California law professor, has joined the Law School as associate dean for academic affairs. "Catharine has a combination of stellar qualities," said Law School Dean Aviam Soifer. "She is a very successful scholar and is renowned for her ability to foster scholarship in others. She has extensive administrative experience in Massachusetts and knows her way around the state, and she brings a perspective from another academic discipline." In addition to a law degree from Harvard University and a bachelor's degree from Wellesley College, Wells holds master's and doctoral degrees in philosophy from the University of California at Berkeley. Prior to her arrival at the Law School, she had been a professor of law at USC since 1984, where she taught torts, criminal law, jurisprudence, American legal theory, business organizations, non-profit organizations, and women and the law. From 1976-84, she held a number of posts in the Massachusetts Attorney General's Office. She was an assistant attorney general and director of the division of public charities from 1979-84; special assistant to the chief of public protection from 1978-79; and assistant attorney general in the consumer protection division from 1976-78. She was also an adjunct professor at the New England School of Law from 1981-84, chairperson of the National Association of State Charities Officials from 1983-84, and a member of the advisory committee to the Commissioner of Internal Revenue on Tax-exempt Organizations from 1987-90.

PHILOSOPHY Career Monograph GENERAL DESCRIPTION AND QUALIFICATIONS The study of philosophy teaches students to reason logically and to think analytically and critically; to develop finely developed skills in argumentation; and to use spoken and written language with clarity and precision. Philosophy teaches students skills that will give them the flexibility and capacity to deal with every day problems. Students learn how to make informed and carefully reasoned value judgments and to think abstractly within natural language or symbolic language. Students are taught to probe deeply into the fundamental knowledge claims, beliefs, and values that the student holds. Another major emphasis in philosophical study is the teaching of major ideas that have helped shaped civilization. Students are prepared to enter a broad range of career options, to enter professional school, or a graduate program. For teaching in community colleges, the M.A. degree is required, although many community college instructors now have the Ph.D. degree. For teaching at the university or four-year college level, the Ph.D. is required. Students contemplating study for a Ph.D. in philosophy should try to gain proficiency in at least one foreign language, such as French or German.
