Image Permanence Institute, Rochester Institute of Technology
August 23-28, 2003
Register now for the 2003 seminar! See details at bottom of page. To help you plan ahead for this unique offering, we've already scheduled next year's program date: August 21-26, 2004
In partnership with the George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film , IPI offers a yearly seminar on the preservation of photographic materials and on digitizing photographic collections. With the increased use of digital imaging technology, today's collection managers need up-to-date information on how to care for their collections and make them accessible for research. This program combines lectures and workshops in traditional preservation techniques with the theory and practice of digital imaging. The two aspects of the seminar are complementary. Concerned collection managers cannot afford to be uninformed in either area.
Participants at the August 2001 seminar
The Program
A week-long program of lectures and workshops on traditional photo collection preservation techniques will expand your expertise on what materials are typically found in photo collections, how they deteriorate, how to store and protect them, and how preservation fits in with other collection activities. The lecture-and-workshop format has been designed to deliver the information you need along with opportunities for small group interactions and individual attention from instructors.

General Motors FM-2 "Wildcat" fighters
In 1942, automobile manufacturer General Motors converted several of its east coast factories to aircraft production under the name Eastern Aircraft Division. Eastern received contracts to build F4F-4 "Wildcat" fighters and TBF-1 "Avenger" torpedo planes, allowing Grumman to gradually reconcentrate its energies on the new, urgently-needed F6F "Hellcat" fighter. The GM F4F-4s, redesignated FM-1s, had only four .50 caliber machine guns, but were otherwise little changed from the original model. Well over a thousand FM-1 fighters were delivered in 1942-43, including some three hundred for the British Royal Navy. Meanwhile, Grumman had prototyped a new "Wildcat" under the designation XF4F-8, which was to be produced by Eastern Aircraft as the FM-2. With lightened structure and a more powerful Wright R-1820 radial engine, the FM-2 was notably quicker, faster climbing, longer ranged and more maneuverable than its predecessor. To help control the increased power, the new plane had a distinctive, taller vertical tail. All-in-all, it was a great improvement, and more than four-thousand FM-2s were built in 1943-45. Of those, over three-hundred went to the British.

Bringing together a library, special collections, and a photo study collection, the Research Library housed in the Getty Research Institute contains materials relevant to the history of art, architecture, world cultures, and disciplines in the humanities and social sciences. The collections are strongest in the history of Western art; however, in recent years, the Research Library has expanded its reach to include areas that have had significant cultural contact and exchange with Europe, such as North and South America, the ancient near East, and the Islamic world. The general library consists of approximately 800,000 volumes of books, serials, and auction catalogs. The special collections encompass rare books, historical photographs, and original archival materials for the study of visual arts and culture. The photo study collection, which contains approximately two million study photographs, documents works of fine and decorative arts and architecture from the ancient world through the twentieth century. The general collections include books, serials, and auction catalogs. The book collection encompasses Western art, archaeology, and architecture from the Bronze Age to the present, with representative selections of material in the humanities and related fields. French, German, Russian, Italian, and American avant-garde materials are a special strength. 25,000 volumes focus on the conservation of cultural heritage, historic preservation, and applied science and technology. The serials collections represent Western art and architecture, as well as selected titles in disciplines of the humanities and social sciences. The auction catalog collection is among the most comprehensive of its kind, with more than 110,000 volumes covering the art market from the late seventeenth century to the present.

An American in Bohol, The Philippines, 1899-1901
An On-line Archival Collection
Special Collections Library, Duke University
More information about related collections The photos that accompany Scriven's diary in this digitized collection are taken from four other collections related to the Philippines at Duke's Special Collections Library: The Philippine Islands and Far East photograph albums, Edward Sharp's Papers: 1901-1980, "Scenes Taken in the Philippines" by J.D. Givens, and "Fighting in the Philippines" by Neely F. Tennyson. Edward Sharp was an American school teacher on Bohol between 1902 and 1904 whose collection consists of many school documents and numerous photos of daily life on the islands. Neely and Givens were most likely affiliated with the U.S. Army as their photo collections are taken mainly during the Spanish-American war and during the suppression of the insurgents that followed the war. The photos are placed in the text of the diary itself to add illustration to the narrative. The photos, though, are not part of Scriven's collection, and most were taken a few years after the diary was written, when the Americans had fully established their control over the Philippines. Or, in the case of Neely and Givens, the photos were taken before Scriven arrived, when the Spanish were still present. There is also a
