Pictish Eagle Symbol In Orkney, because of the overwhelming effect of later Norse culture, little more than the name "Pict" remains as a testimony to the islands' pre-Norse inhabitants. Once the overlords of Orkney and a powerful political and military force in their own right, by the time of the Norsemen, the islands' Pictish rulers had already begun slipping from the pages of history into the shadowy realm of Orcadian folklore As time went on the line between historical fact and fable began to blur. Before long the historical Picts were thoroughly confused with elements of trow and fairyfolk lore resulting in a semi-mythical race with distinctly mythical attributes. The Norsemen, who began arriving in the islands in the eighth century, rarely mention Orkney's Picts. The Orkneyinga Saga pays absolutely no attention to any pre-Norse population in Orkney. The

http://www.orkneyjar.com/history/picts/language.htm
At the forefront of the great mysteries surrounding the Picts, and one which has stimulated the most discussion and argument over the centuries, is the language these people spoke. According to historical records written by contemporaries of the Picts, they spoke a different language to that used by the other inhabitants of Scotland. A clear reference to this can be found within the accounts of St Columba's life in which we learn that he required an interpreter in order to converse with the northern Picts. However as the Picts themselves kept no written records of their lifestyles, beliefs or heritage, their language has now all but disappeared. The only sources that can give vague clues as to its nature are some of the carved inscriptions they left, placenames and certain accounts of Pictish names written by external sources at the time. As with all things Pictish, however, the lack of concrete evidence has led to a number of opinions and theories as to the form of the spoken language of the inhabitants of Northern Scotland in the early centuries of the first millennium. Some claim that the Picts spoke an old language indigenous to area - a language that predated the language of the Britons, the Scots and the Irish. This language did not have an Indo-European origin but was instead a survival of the ancient language used by the Bronze Age people of the area.

The Ancient History of the Surname McCready
The Pictish race, one of the founding races of the British Isles, arrived in Scotland from Brittany about the 15 th century B.C. the surname McCready is believed to be descended from this race. Migrating from northwest France they sailed northward to Ireland where they were refused permission to land, but they were allowed by the Kings of Ireland to locate in the eastern part of Scotland with the proviso that all their Kings marry an Irish Princess. According to the Venerable Bede, England’s oldest historian, this established their matriarchal hierarchy, rare in the annals of British history. Nechtan was the first recorded Pictish King, about 724 A.D., although, according to Roman history, many Pictish kings before him had fought gallantly at Hadrian’s Wall against the Roman invasion many centuries before. There rivals to the west, the Dalriadans or the highlanders of the Western Isles, were their constant foes in the battle for supremacy for power over all Scotland, known then as Alba, or Caledonia. Nechtan was finally expelled from Pictland by Alpin, half Dalriadan, half Pict, the result of a political marriage.

History on Interludes doorstep
On 11 May '98 the Scarborough Evening News announced that a research team from Cambridge University had uncovered evidence of an advanced community of stone age hunters at Starr Carr about 8 miles from Scarborough between Seamer and Flixton. This community is believed to be more advanced than anything else in Europe at the time and has drawn comparisons with Jericho and the Middle east - traditionally thought of as the cradle of civilisation.
Castle Rock 500 BC Excavations in the area of the Castle Rock in the 1920's found Bronze Age relics. It is important to remember that at this time Britain was still joined to Europe - the land to the East was mostly marsh. AD 400 The Romans built a series of signal stations along the East Coast so that fires could be lit in the event of an invasion from the North Sea. These beacons were built at Ravenscar, Scarborough (on Castle Rock) and Filey Brigg. The Scarborough site was abandoned around AD400.
Around AD650 the present day Yorkshire area was occupied by both Picts (ancient people of Northern England) and Saxons (Germanic in origin). In AD655 King Oswy of Northumbria defeated the Picts and then ruled the East Coast from Aberdeen down to the Wash. Around AD790 the Danes began attacking Northumbria and by AD880 they had occupied much of Northern England including York which they made their capital. A Danish prince called Thorgil was nicknamed 'Scarthi' which means 'hare lip'. The settlement established in AD966 took its name from "Scarthi's Burgh" or Scarthi's stronghold - hence Scarborough.

Old Ireland - WELCOME THE TUATHA DE DANANN THE MILESIANS THE CELTS SOME NOTABLE MILESIAN ROYALTIES ... The Dawning The Irish Kingdom of Scotland
The terms Scotia and Scot were first applied to Ireland and Irishmen, but later came to be applied to Irelands northeastern neighbour, Alba and its inhabitants.
Our most ancient poets and seanachies claim that an early name for Eirinn, Scotia, was derived from Scota, queen-mother of the Milesians. The poet Egesippus tells how "Scotia which links itself to no land, trembles at their name" - the term Scotia is, by Continental writers, applied to Ireland more often than any other name. And Scot is the term by these writers most constantly applied to a native of Eirinn. Orosius, the third century geographer, uses "Hibernia the nation of the Scoti". An Irish exile on the continent, the celebrated Marianus Scotus referred to his countrymen as Scots.
The modern name of Ireland seems to have originated with the Northmen, in about the seventh century - being probably formed from Eire, they called it Ir or Ire, and after that the English called it Ireland, and its natives Irish. For several centuries longer, however, these terms were not adopted by Continental writers, who still continued to speak of Scotia and the Scot, and designated the Irish scholars on the Continent by the term Scotus. The new name Ireland was on the Continent, first used only in the eleventh century (by Adam De Breme).

BRECHIN: SNAPSHOTS FROM THE PAST
BRECHIN: ANCIENT CAPITAL? Little is known about the Picts (Picti) who were so designated by the Romans, according to a writer in the third century A.D., from their practice of painting or, rather, tattooing their bodies. Possibly calling themselves Priteni (i.e. the people of designs), they probably included at least two tribes with sub-tribal groups organised into a kingdom or kingdoms which came under threat not just from the Romans but from the Scots, Angles and Vikings. These external threats helped to unify the Picts and it seems likely that they had formed a single kingdom under Brude mac Bile by the seventh century. ORIGINS OF THE NAME BRECHIN: ANCIENT CAPITAL? The Picts The term 'Pict' or 'Picti' is one that causes a great deal of confusion and misunderstanding. The Roman writer Eumenius first used the term in 297 A.D. to describe the inhabitants of the country now known as Scotland. The translation means 'painted ones'; exactly what was meant is still a bone of contention. On tribesmen who fiercely defended their independence. It is worthwhile noting, however, that the Gauls used wode, the Britons used wode and neither group was described as 'Picti'. I believe the Romans were describing the mode of dress that they found these natives wearing. The use of wode as war paint was seen to be the common practice of 'barbarian peoples' and not worthy of comment. We must remember that Roman writers of the period were the war correspondents of their time and that only the unusual was worth reporting. Only new species were worth transporting home and only the peculiarities of new lands and peoples were worth mentioning. That said, we can then assume that

THE ANCIENT HISTORY OF THE DISTINGUISHED SURNAME JACKSON The bleak border moors and craggy hills of the Scottish - English border set the scene of the origin of this notable surname Jackson. It is one of the oldest surnames with a history which is closely woven into the rich and beautiful tapestry of the border chronicles. Professional researchers examined some of the most ancient manuscripts such as the Exchequer Rolls of Scotland, the Domesday Book, the luquistio, the Ragman Rolls, Baptismals, Parish Records, and Cartularies, and Tax Records. The researchers found the first record of the name Jackson in Northumberland where they were seated from early times. Their first records appeared on the Census Rolls taken by the ancient Kings of Britian to determine the rate of taxation of their subjects. The early and middle development of the name found many different spellings in the Archives. The, name Jackson, occurred in many references, and from time to time, the surname was spelled Jackson, Jaccson, Jacson, Jackston, and these changes in spelling frequently occurred within the same family name. Scribes and church officials spelt the name as it sounded, and these spellings were not even consistent during the lifetime of the same person. The family name Jackson is believed to be descended originally from the Boernicians. This ancient founding race of the north were a mixture of Scottish Picts and Angles, a race dating from about the year 400 A.D. Their territories ranged from Edinburgh in the north, southward to the north riding of Yorkshire in England by 1000 A.D. This race had formed into discernible clans and families, perhaps some of the first evidence of the family structure in Britian. From this area we get some of the most impressive names in history, surnames with strange nicknames such as the Angry Kerrs, the Sturdy Amstronges, the Gallant Grahams, the Saucy Scotts, the Bells, the Nixons, the Famous Dicksons, the Bold Rutherfords, and the Pudding Somervilles.
