Franklin Pierce, 14th U. S. President Franklin Pierce was born in Hillsborough, New Hampshire in 1804. Like most lawmakers, he studied law and entered into politics. After doing service with the state legislature, he moved on to Washington where he was in the House of Representatives and late the U. S. Senate. He served in the Mexican War, and afterwards was proposed for the Presidential nomination. At the Democratic Convention in 1852, they balloted 48 times and in the process, all of the well-known candidates were eliminated, leaving Pierce as a the dark horse nominee. His opponent in the election was General Winfield Scott, but Scott was unable to carry the South and Pierce won with the popular vote, although it was by a narrow margin. When time for re-election came, the Democrats refused to renominate him, so he was not to have a second term, so he returned to New Hampshire. Franklin Pierce Franklin Pierce became President at a time of apparent tranquillity. The United States, by virtue of the Compromise of 1850, seemed to have weathered its sectional storm. By pursuing the recommendations of southern advisers, Piercea New Englanderhoped to prevent still another outbreak of that storm. But his policies, far from preserving calm, hastened the disruption of the Union. Born in Hillsborough, New Hampshire, in 1804, Pierce attended Bowdoin College. After graduation he studied law, then entered politics. At 24 he was elected to the New Hampshire legislature; two years later he became its Speaker. During the 1830's he went to Washington, first as a Representative, then as a Senator. Pierce, after serving in the Mexican War, was proposed by New Hampshire friends for the Presidential nomination in 1852. At the Democratic Convention, the delegates agreed easily enough upon a platform pledging undeviating support of the Compromise of 1850 and hostility to any efforts to agitate the slavery question. But they balloted 48 times and eliminated all the well-known candidates before nominating Pierce, a true "dark horse."

The Homestead ... Life of Franklin Pierce, Text from our brochure "I leave Hillsborough with no ordinary regret. There are a thousand reasons why it cannot be otherwise - I have hitherto known no other home. Here have passed many of the happiest days and months of my life. With these streams and mountains are associated most of the delightful recollections of buoyant and happy boyhood, and in my early intercourse with the generous, independent, and intelligent yeomanry of Hillsborough I became attached to, and learned how highly to appreciate this class of community which constitutes the true nobility of this country. I need hardly say that I shall never cease to remember my birthplace with pride as well as affection, and with still more pride shall I recollect the steady, unqualified and generous confidence which has been reposed in me by its inhabitants." Franklin Pierce
The Life of Franklin Pierce Franklin Pierce (1804-1869) served his country during one of the most tumultuous periods of American history. Born in Hillsborough in 1804, he was the son of Benjamin Pierce and Anna Kendrick. During Franklin Pierce's formative years the Homestead served as a gathering place for the great philosophers, politicians, and writers of the era. At his father's knee he learned of the great war for American Independence, and what the nation's liberty had cost. Young Franklin's childhood surroundings formed the man who would become the only U.S. President from New Hampshire.

President Franklin Pierce
Born in Hillsborough, NH
where his homestead still stands, Franklin Pierce was educated at Bowdoin College and was admitted to the state bar in 1827. Initially a Jacksonian, he served in the US Senate and did not favor abolitionism. Enlisting in the Mexican War, he later won the presidency as a "dark horse" candidate as the Civil War approached. Franklin passed the Fugitive Slave Act and pushed states rights Westward. Wracked by the death of his three children, Franklin's administration sparked little support and he was not renominated.

    The Pierce Manse
    A National Historic Site
Family home from 1842 to 1848 of Franklin Pierce , the Concord Lawyer who was to become the 14th President of the United States and the only one from the Granite State Located at 14 Penacook Street , at the very end of North Main Street in Concord, N.H. Threatened with demolition by an Urban Renewal project back in 1966, the only Concord house ever owned and occupied by Franklin Pierce was saved by The Pierce Brigade which, in 1971, moved it to its present site in Concord's Historic District . The log cabin of the first Congregational minister once stood here. The Brigade owns the house and maintains it as a memorial to New Hampshire's only President. The word "manse" in its earliest usage designated "the house occupied by the householder." We apply it to this house to differentiate it from other homes connected with Pierce. Of simple architectural design, the house has been restored insofar as possible to the home it must have been when the Pierces lived here with their two children. Many of the furnishings belonged to Pierce or other members of his family. Some items are known as "White House Pieces." When he moved into this house, he had just resigned his post as U.S. Senator to resume his law practice, and it was at this time that he was exerting every effort to land some sort of government position for his friend Nathaniel Hawthorne.
