    The Early Years
Franklin Pierce was born in a log cabin in Hillsborough, New Hampshire. Soon after his birth, his family moved into a spacious home nearby. Pierce's father was active in politics, attaining the governorship of New Hampshire. Pierce received formal schooling from a young age. He attended Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, from which he graduated in 1824. Among his schoolmates were the future authors Nathaniel Hawthorne and Henry Wadsworth. After college, Pierce studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1827. From 1829-1832, Pierce served in the New Hampshire legislature. From 1831 to 1832 he was that body's speaker. From 1833- 1837 Pierce served as a member of the US House of Representative as a Democrat. In 1836 he was elected to the US Senate by the New Hampshire legislature. When he took his seat the following year he was 32 years old, the youngest member of the senate. In 1842 Pierce resigned his seat and returned to New Hampshire to practice law. During the Mexican War, Pierce enlisted and soon became a Brigadier General.

A Dream I Had About Franklin Pierce
    With Commentary
    by T. Mike
    The Dream:

In the dream, I am just starting to play a totally immersive virtual reality video game. You have 360 degrees of computer generated visuals, audio and sensations around you. It's pretty cool, except that the graphics are not that great, they're obviously computer generated. The game is set in the Middle Ages and I am in charge of a large force of computer generated medieval troops and we're outside marching up a large, steep hill. We can see other, enemy armies marching up the hill on either side. I've set the game so the objective is to capture a small building at the very top of the hill. That's why the armies are all rushing up the hill and have yet to engage each other in combat. But well before we get to the top, my plan is to switch the objective to kill all the other armies. My thinking is this will make the battle much more interesting as we'll be able to get closer to the other armies and also have to fight on a forested hillside instead of a grassy plain.
However, before I can make the change in objective, indeed, before the game can really get going, suddenly, out of the sky, drops a cartoon version of the fourteenth president of the U.S.A., Franklin Pierce. He's animated in the style of 1950's cartoon TV commercials, and looks weirdly out of place in the pseudo-realistic, texture-mapped computer game. Now, I haven't a clue what Franklin Pierce looked like, but in the dream, he's got black hair, thick eyebrows and a weak chin. He's wearing a 1950's style gray suit with a red tie and his head is much too large for his body. In fact, he looks less like a president and a lot more like a Pep Boy (you know, Manny, Moe and Jack?).

    • Education and Occupations:
      • Education:
        • Pierce enrolled at the Hancock Academy in 1818 and then transferred to the Francestown Academy in the spring of 1820.
        • He entered the Bowdoin College in the fall of 1820.
        • After finishing college in 1824, Pierce studied law under John Burnham, then Levi Woodbury (who later became a supreme court justice), Samuel Howe, and finally Edmund Parker.
        • He was admitted to the bar in September 1827.
      • Occupations:
        • Pierce was a member of the the New Hampshire Legislature from 1829-1833.
        • He was a U.S. Representative from New Hampshire from 1833-1837. While in the House, Pierce supported Jackson, opposed federally supported internal improvements, and denounced abolitionists.
        Term of Presidency: 1853-1857
      • The major issues and events of the election of 1852 were more personal than philosophical. Whigs, who supported General Winfield Scott, touted Scott's military record and reminded Catholics that Scott's daughter had become a nun, while charging that Pierce was a coward that had avoided the real fighting. Democrats touted Pierce as another Jackson, nicknaming him "Young Hickory of the Granite Hills"; while attacking Scott from both an anti-catholic standpoint, noting that he was catholic, and an immigrant (Catholic) standpoint, pointing out that he would execute Irish Catholics for desertion during the time when he was a general in the army. Additionally, both sides claimed that the other candidate was a drunkard.

He was elected to the state legislature in 1829 and was chosen Speaker in 1831; he went to Congress in 1833 and became a U.S. senator in 1837. An opponent of the abolitionists, he was one of the sponsors of the gag rule against antislavery petitions in Congress. After resigning from the Senate in 1842, he returned to Concord, where he became one of the leading members of the Concord Regency, a group of Democratic political leaders who dominated the party in New Hampshire. His participation as a general in the Mexican War under Winfield Scott, and his firm support of the North-South components of the Compromise of 1850, which made him acceptable to the South, enabled him to become the Democratic candidate for the presidency in 1852. Nominated on the 49th ballot after a deadlock between his principal rivals, he decisively defeated Gen. Scott, his Whig opponent in the presidential election.

1c. The Status and Rank of the President of the United States All of the European monarchs and states had been put on an equal footing with the Thai court, as evidenced by the Royal level of gifts sent to Queen Victoria, and to France. In the past, the Thai court had sent a “Gift of Respect” to the United States. But what to do with the President of the United States, an elected official in a democratic country? This was a great matter for consideration during the negotiations for the Harris Treaty of 1857. King Mongkut had apparently rejected the thought of sending another “Gift of Respect.” But what level of gift should be sent at the conclusion of the Treaty negotiations? King Mongkut decided that the President of the United States is not quite a monarch, but as the head of state, he should receive a Royal Letter along with the insignia of rank of a very high nobleman, rather than the insignia of a king’s rank. In contrast, gifts to Western Monarchs were the equivalent of the jewel-encrusted possessions of Royal Family members. King Mongkut and his brother, Phra Pin Klao who was simultaneously a reigning Upparat (the Second King), each sent sets of gifts to President Pierce. Phra Pin Klao's gift was the more traditional of the two.
