In 1842, Pierce resigned his seat in the senate and resumed the practice of law at Concord, N.H. His reputation at the bar was very high, his success being largely due to his power of identifying himself with his client's cause, and his strong personal influence over a jury. In 1846 he was offered the position of attorney-general of the United States, but he declined this as well as many other public offices during this period. However, he still took active interest in political affairs and was a frequent counselor of the leaders of the Democratic party. On the outbreak of the Mexican War he joined as a volunteer one of the companies raised in Concord. He was soon after appointed colonel of the ninth regiment, and in March, 1847, brigadier general. He participated in the battles of Vera Cruz, Churubusco, and of Contreras, where, on August 19th, he was severely injured by the fall of his horse. At the close of the war in December, 1847, he resigned his commission. Returning to New Hampshire, he was made presiding officer of the state constitutional convention, and in 1852 he became the candidate of the Democratic party for the presidency, being nominated as a compromise candidate after a long struggle between Buchanan, Douglas, Cass and Marcy. He was elected by 254 electoral votes, carrying all but four of the states. General Winfield Scott received the other 42 electoral votes.

62. American Indian, Chief Seattle, Wrote To President Franklin Pierce In 1854
American Indian, Chief Seattle, wrote to president franklin pierce in 1854. How canyou buy or sell the sky, the warmth of the land? The idea is strange to us.
http://user.icx.net/~ag4m/chief.htm
American Indian, Chief Seattle, wrote to President Franklin Pierce in 1854. How can you buy or sell the sky, the warmth of the land? The idea is strange to us. If we do not own the freshness of the air and the sparkle of the water, how can you buy them? Every part of this earth is sacred to my people. Every shining pine needle, every sandy shore, every mist in the dark woods, every clearing and humming insect is holy in the memory and experience of my people. The sap which courses through the trees carries the memories of the red man. The white man's dead forget the country of their birth when they go to walk among the stars. Our dead never forget this beautiful earth, for it is the mother of the red man. We are part of the earth and it is a part of us. The perfumed flowers are our sisters; the deer, the horse, the great eagle, these are our brothers. The rocky crests, the juices in the meadows, the body heat of the pony, and manall belong to the same family. So, when the Great Chief in Washington sends word that he wishes to buy our land, he asks much of us. The Great Chief sends word he will reserve us a place so that we can live comfortably to ourselves. He will be our father and we will be his children. So we will consider your offer to buy our land. But it will not be easy. For this land is sacred to us. This shining water that moves in the streams and rivers is not just water but the blood of our ancestors. If we sell you land, you must remember that it is sacred, and you must teach your children that it is sacred and that each ghastly reflection in the clear water of the lake tells of events and memories in the life of my people. The water's murmur is the voice of my father's father.

President
Franklin Pierce
Served 1853-1857 Franklin Pierce was born November 13, 1804, in Hillsborough, New Hampshire, in a log cabin on the Contoacook River. A skilled orator at 24, Pierce was elected to the New Hampshire legislature. Two years later, he became its Speaker. During the 1830s, he served as a Congressmen, then as a Senator. He volunteered to fight in the Mexican War and became a Colonel, but was often too sick to fight in any of the battles. After he served in the Mexican War, Pierce's New Hampshire friends proposed him for the Presidential nomination in 1852. At the Democratic Convention, delegates agreed to support the Compromise of 1850, but they balloted 48 times and eliminated all well-known candidates before nominating Pierce, a true "dark horse." He won the election against Whig party candidate General Winfield Scott. His Vice President was William R. King. He married Jane Means Appleton, and they had three sons, but all died very young. Two months before he took office, he and his wife saw their 11-year-old son killed when their train was wrecked. Pierce entered the Presidency grief-stricken and exhausted. During Pierce's term, Kansas-Nebraska Act repealed the Missouri Compromise and reopened the question of slavery in the West. Representing the U.S., James Gadsden negotiated with Mexico to buy the area now comprising southern Arizona and southern New Mexico for $10,000,000. In the midst of Pierce's term, a land rush by Northernern and Southerners led to a shooting war in Kansas. "Bleeding Kansas" became a prelude to the Civil War.
