Pitcairn Island Sex Scandal
Presenter: James O'Brien Thursday, 18 July 2002 Pitcairn Island Flag Pitcairn Islands, located in the Southern Pacific, between Australia and South America, became famous when Bounty Mutineer, Fletcher Christian, established a colony there in 1790. Now the island has now become infamous due to allegations of child sexual abuse. The first inhabitants to settle the Islands were Polynesian, however, it was the Bounty Mutineers, who settled the island with their Tahitian companions, and who are the ancestors of the current inhabitants.
In 1838, Pitcairn became the first Pacific island to become a British colony, and remains an overseas territory of the United Kingdom. During the Nineteenth Century, however, the Pitcairners were twice removed from the island, once to Tahiti, and once to Norfolk Island. Those who live on the island now are descended from the Norfolk Pitcairners who returned to the island.
Outward migration, primarily to New Zealand, has thinned the population from a peak of 233 in 1937 to about 45 today.

... Australia/Pacific : Pitcairn Islands Pitcairn Islands
History Polynesians may have settled Pitcairn as long as 3500 years ago, at least temporarily, and archaeologists believe there was a Polynesian settlement on the island between the 12th and 15th centuries AD. At that time, a lively trade was carried on between Pitcairn, Henderson - which was inhabited as well - and Mangareva, in what is now the Gambier Archipelago of south-eastern French Polynesia. These earlier settlements left burial sites containing human skeletons, petroglyphs, earth ovens, stone adzes and other artefacts, although no one is sure where the original Pitcairners came from. Pitcairn is likely to have been important for its quarry where stone adzes were mined. Despite Pitcairn's diminutive size, its fertile volcanic soils were (and still are) able to support a permanent population. By 1606, when Spanish explorer de Quiros came looking for his own personal El Dorado and found Henderson, both it and presumably Pitcairn were deserted. Pitcairn's European discovery had to wait until 1767, when Philip Carteret sailed by on HMS

About us
Send me a Brochure Tripbuilder (Shopping Cart) Send me a Quotation ... Pacific News Member of Solomon Islands History It is thought that the first inhabitants of the Solomon Islands arrived from the north-west about 30,000 years ago, but the first organised agricultural people didn't settle until about 4000 BC, bringing with them knowledge of sailing, crops and animal breeding. Between that time and about 1600 AD, westward migration by Polynesians and the arrival of the Lapita people from the east created a heady mix of cultural practices in the region. Finding the main islands already occupied by Melanesians, the newcomers settled on the smaller, isolated islands, eliminating any small populations that happened to be in the way. For the next four hundred years, these outlying areas became the focus of Tongan and Tokelauan aggression, resulting in a natural fear of strangers. By the 19th century, this fear produced the widespread habit (rarely practiced today) of attacking strangers on sight. Due largely to bad mapping, Europeans stayed away from (that is, couldn't find) the Solomons for the next century and a half. In 1767, British captain Philip Cartaret stumbled through the island group. He couldn't believe that he'd rediscovered the Solomons, but the people who followed - an assortment of British, French and American explorers, whalers and traders - certainly left their mark in the area. Large-scale traders cut short the Islands' 'Great Peace' with their shonky business practices (robbery, murder) and diseased bodies. The islanders quickly grew to hate the traders, and would often kill any white person they saw. Add firearms into this mix of headhunting, 'labour recruitment' (blackbirding) and distrust, and the Solomon Islands quickly gained the reputation for being the most inhospitable place in the Pacific. Even the unstoppable missionaries watched their step.

I. Introduction to the Guide This Resource guide deals with internet sites providing Caselaw, Legislation and Government home pages for the Pacific Island region. There are also links to several relevant journals, and to academic sites providing dedicated Pacific Law web pages, or Centres dealing with Pacific Law. There are several issues to be aware of when using the internet to locate Pacific law sites.
  • Many sites bundle Pacific into an area called “Asia Pacific”. This often includes countries bordering the Pacific on the eastern side, but in many instances excludes most Pacific islands.
