THE BOAT COMMITTEE
The Boat Committee has 10-20 active members who serve as skippers, skippers in training, first mates, and crew members. We are actively recruiting, especially crew members. The perks include painting and scraping and varnishing and splicing lines (we teach all that) and also learning sailing all the way to skipper status if you want to go that far. And lots of sailing. We need someone interested in researching the history of one of our boats, the Adam Hyler. A good way to start is to just (in season) show up at one of our weekly sails. No commitment. If you like it, and us, show up again. By then you'll know when our monthly meetings and other activities happen. In season means Summer and early Fall. Out of season we meet monthly. By October we will have decided when and where for this year. In or out of season contact us.

Thrangu Rinpoche to Build a U.S. Retreat Center in Crestone, Colorado Tibetan Buddhist scholar and teacher, Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche has been given 35 acres of land in Crestone, Colorado. Under his guidance, students will establish a retreat center, Rinpoche’s first in the US. During his annual seminar in Maine this year, Thrangu Rinpoche sent this message about the new retreat center to his students worldwide: "Over the years many of my students have expressed a wish to do extended practice. Up until now I have only been able to say, 'That is very good. Please go and do that at home.' I have not been able to provide proper facilities for them to do a retreat. Over the years I have thought about having some kind of place where students could come and practice for three years—or, if they couldn't do three years, then for three monthsor for one month, or even for a few weeks. There has not been anything until now. Now things are about to change. “There is a place called Crestone in the southern part of Colorado where land has been obtained. This place seems to be quite good for a retreat center, which is in process of developing right now. Therefore those of you who have an interest in doing retreat in the future could think about this place. It would be good to go there and do practice in retreat. “Also if you can find it in yourself to make this happen, it would be excellent both for yourself and for others. I as well as other teachers will go and teach there, inviting many different kinds of practitioners to come and use this place. If you can help make it happen, I would be very pleased. So please keep this in mind.”

The Conception Bay South Fire Department provides fire protection and fire prevention services to the town's residents and businesses. There are two stations, the East Station located in Topsail, and the West Station, located in Kelligrews. The Department is composed of both volunteers and career firefighters under the leadership of Fire Chief Richard Murphy. Our history:
  • established in 1973 with 56 volunteer fire fighters under the guidance of appointed Chief William V. Bursey.
  • first Pumper Truck was a 1973 Ford Pierre Thibault with a 625-gallon per minute pump and carried 500 gallons of water. This truck was stored at a local garage owned by Joe Hynes until the completion of the West Station in the spring of 1974.
  • next Pumper Truck was purchased in 1975, a 1974 Ford Pierre Thibault with a 625-gallon per minute pump that also carried 500 gallons of water. This truck was stored in the West Station until the completion of the East Station in Topsail that opened in the spring of 1976.
  • 1975 the Conception Bay South Lions Club donated a Dodge four wheel drive pick-up, which was used to carry portable pumps and large quantities of hose.

The Examiner Commissioning ceremony trip leaves many lasting memories. The Truman and William Chrisman high school choirs have returned from Norfolk, Va. with memories that will last them a lifetime. From standing on a ship the size of four and a half football fields to swimming in the Atlantic, from meeting the captain of the USS Harry S. Truman to almost meeting the president of the United States, these students have gained experiences most people their age couldn't dream of. One of the morals most impressed upon by Terre McPheeters and Bruce Dickerson, choir directors, was teamwork. "Help each other out," was heard during rehearsals, performances or just trying to be on time back to the buses after dinner and shopping in the evenings. McPheeters, Chrisman's director, stressed that to be successful, it's important to work together and be each other's support throughout their journey. One instance of the close-knit group's teamwork happened during the morning of their performance at the carrier's commissioning ceremonies. As the students were nervously rushing to the buses to transfer down to Pier 12, a robe was misplaced. The senior whom the robe belonged to was sobbing terribly, afraid that her once-in-a-lifetime chance was about to be crushed. McPheeters told her it would all work out.

Innovative teachers turn fundraising programs into learning opportunities When fourth and fifth graders from a Florida elementary school wanted to raise money for a Christmas charity project, their teacher saw it as an opportunity to illustrate real life lessons in citizenship and business management. Armed with cardboard boxes carrying ornaments, gifts and baked goods, Bill Snydor's 22 students went to each classroom in the school to sell their homemade wares, making change, keeping track of inventory and recording their progress daily on a chart of expenses, sales and profits. In two weeks, the Broward County students sold 1,700 items earning $1,200 for the Kids in Distress program. On the other side of the country, California teachers Bonnie McKenna and Sue DeHart shared a dream for a living science lab. So, with the support of their principal, they teamed up to create a student-run business on campus selling giant cookies one day a week after lunch.

T he beauty of the Hesston College campus-its landscaping, carefully placed buildings and network of direct sidewalks-results from decades of painstaking planning. In fact, throughout the school's history, administrators have placed a high priority on campus design. The first campus plan was developed in the 1920s. Additional plans were drafted in 1964, 1976 and 1988. "The Campus Plan Update for the 90s" challenged the Board of Overseers and administrators of Hesston College to seek funds totaling $20,300,000. That amount would provide for renovations and updates to existing buildings; underwrite additions that would allow the College to use existing space more efficiently; and meet the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). New construction plans call for a theater/recital hall/classroom and the addition of a facility for the nursing program. Proposed renovations include the Mary Miller Library, the administration building, dormitories and athletic fields. The College has a policy of providing 50 percent of the cost of the new building funds raised as a building endowment. For example, the cost of Mary Miller Library-which calls for a 5,200-square-foot addition, entry reconstruction, lower level and main floor renovations, and upgrades to the heating and cooling system-was estimated at $2,225,000. Of this amount, $750,000 was the cost of new construction. Therefore, the building endowment was $375,000, or 50 percent of the cost of new construction.

The Secret of Campaign Success
How Kansas Special Olympics Raised $1.35 Million By Robert F. Hartsook, JD, EdD
T rade secrets are a dime a dozen in today's business arena. In philanthropy, however, the secret to a good campaign is worth its weight in gold. Nonprofits can spend so much time concentrating on how they will reach their goal, they forget who will help get them there. For Kansas Special Olympics (KSO), the secret to raising a million dollars had as much to do with the people as it did the process. Kansas Special Olympics was founded in 1970 and has a proud history of providing quality year-round sports training, education and athletic competition programs for individuals with mental retardation. Today, governed by a 20 member Board of Directors, full-time individuals on staff, as well as the support of over 20,000 volunteers, KSO is a model organization utilizing the venue of sports to impact the lives of thousands of Kansans; whether athletes, coaches or volunteers, by affecting their personal, emotional, spiritual, educational, physical and psychological development. Due to the tremendous growth and expansion of KSO during the past 25 years (participation numbers grew from 200 in their first year, to over 7,416 during the 1993-94 year), the organization outgrew their state corporate/training facility. In 1995, KSO hired our firm to do a campaign assessment for a new education and program center to meet the current and future demands of the organization. Upon our recommendation, they entered into a $1.35 million capital campaign in November 1995. Twenty months later the "Together We Win" campaign was successfully completed. The campaign's title was synonymous with the way the campaign unfolded, as every person involved with the campaign seemed to understand and appreciate their single role in the collective effort.

Fund-raisers are constantly going on across the nation for our program in order to help us continue our expansion. If you would like to see our program in your community, the funds should come from your school district, community businesses and/or leaders or fundraising efforts. Often, your school district will have grant writers who will know what funding is available for your particular state, city or district. There also may be individuals who may want to "adopt" a school and fund it entirely themselves ( approximately $190,000 for three years for one school If you are a black belt martial artist and are interested in pursuing employment as a karate instructor, see the job description in the background information on this web site. We will talk about the following four aspects: Foundations for individuals; Foundations for corporations; Foundations for communities, and; Charitable planning tips that work. We will be using as the “charity illustration” the program of the National Heritage Foundation, which is a “founder-involved” public charity (501(c)(3) / 509(a)(1)). NHF, which I began in 1968, is the founder of the Donor-Directed foundations that you see replicated in many community foundations today, and in several national organizations. Foundations for Individuals Before the 1969 Tax Reform Act, if a wealthy person wanted to set up a Foundation, he simply did so. After the act went into effect, the incentives were dampened: in fact they were dumped in the toilet. After 1969, such a foundation would become a Private Foundation, with a 5% distribution requirement, a 2% tax on income, private inurement, self sealing, portfolio tampering, excess business holding and reporting requirements that made the donor say “no.”

FTC targets holiday charity frauds
Holidays bring out some wild pitches from telephone solicitors. In some cases, both consumers and the charities themselves need protection.
By Steve Gillmor
Americans are a giving bunch we donate more than $140 billion annually to charities. Charitable contributions accelerate during the holiday season, and so does the frequency of deceptive telephone fund-raising schemes.
"This is the time of year when fund-raisers are particularly aggressive," says Charles Harwood, a staff attorney in the Seattle regional office of the Federal Trade Commission. "It’s really hard to tell just based on the brief pitch whether it’s a fund-raiser or whether the money is simply going into someone’s pocket." Tactics vary, but result is the same Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal said consumers should question the validity of telephone-solicited calls "The tactics may vary impersonating a law enforcement official, lying about a past contribution, falsely inflating program activities but the result, invariably, is to deprive truly critical public and worthwhile charities of scarce dollars and credibility." In one case, the FTC filed federal charges against North American Charitable Services (NACS), a for-profit professional fund-raiser that contracted with more than 70 nonprofit organizations for the right to solicit donations on their behalf. According to the FTC, NACS entered into separate fund-raising contracts with subagents on behalf of each different nonprofit client, paying these subcontractors between 75% and 85% of "collected sales."
