GRIN TAXONOMY
GRIN taxonomic data provide the structure and nomenclature for the accessions of the National Plant Germplasm System ( NPGS ). Many plants (37,000 taxa, 14,000 genera) are included in GRIN taxonomy, especially economic plants. A recent paper on GRIN taxonomy provides a thorough discussion of data standards and taxonomic philosophy.

4. Index Nominum Genericorum (ING)
A collaborative project of the International Association for plant taxonomy and the Smithsonian Institution, providing a compilation of generic names published for all organisms covered by the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature.
http://rathbun.si.edu/botany/ing/
The Index Nominum Genericorum ING ), a collaborative project of the International Association for Plant Taxonomy (IAPT) and the Smithsonian Institution, was initiated in 1954 as a compilation of generic names published for all organisms covered by the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature . We are pleased to offer a way to search the ING database . We hope that those needing access to information about generic names of plants will use the index and will advise us of potential additions and corrections. Ellen Farr and Gea Zijlstra, Editors
farr.ellen@nmnh.si.edu

Introduction
The original intent of the ING was to bring all generic names of plants together in a single list to reveal homonymy between groups. In addition, ING includes bibliographic citations and information about the typification and nomenclatural status of generic names. The index was first published on sets of printed cards and then in book form in 1979 (Farr et al., 1979). A supplement was also published (Farr et al., 1986). While a second supplement is planned, we recognize that hard copy is immediately out of date, and for users with access to the Internet we believe that the World Wide Web offers promise as a useful platform for a collaborative project such as this. Current work on the ING is supported by the Smithsonian Institution, IAPT, and the University of Utrecht, Utrecht, The Netherlands. The content of the database was developed over a 40-year period by the efforts of more than 100

IAPT - International Association for Plant Taxonomy
Registration of plant names - end of the trial phase The XVI th International Botanical Congress (St Louis 1999) has decided that registration of plant names should not be made mandatory, and that the registration trial should come to an end. We at the Berlin registration secretariat encountered no serious problems as to the technical side of registration. From 01 January 1998 through 30 July 1999, almost 10,000 names of new taxa, new combinations and substitute names have been entered into a database designed for this purpose and been made freely available on the Web. For your convenience, this database will be kept available. The database and documentation has not been further updated. Database Documentation © by International Association for Plant Taxonomy. Welcome to CULTIVAR.ORG , your online guide to the nomenclature, cultivar descriptions, classification, and identificaton of garden plants. This site is sponsored by Taxonomic Computer Research and members of the New Ornamentals Society. In 1998 we launched T-LAN , a pilot project in "popular accessible taxonomy" offering online resources about familiar landscape plants. The numerous links together with original identification keys and articles proved an instant hit, gathering tens of thousands of visitors from 65 countries. Students, curators, nurserymen, researchers, architects, and home gardeners around the world now use T-LAN to understand more about plant names, characteristics, genetic resource protection, colors, and unique cultivars. We have decided to expand on T-LAN with its focus on ornamentals to add resources on fruit, vegetable, florist, and turfgrass crops. In the coming months and years we will offer links and original content on the full diversity of garden plants which enrich our lives. Your ideas and suggestions are very welcome. British Columbia plant species codes and selected attributes: Version 4
These species code files contain the presently accepted scientific and common names for vascular plants, mosses and lichens of British Columbia. The liverworts and hornworts included on this list are from the North American lists as a B.C. list does not exist. All species are given a 7 or 8 character code for use in database applications. In addition, commonly used species synonyms are included to assist in determining the presently accepted name. Species attributes include lifeform, toxicity, weed status, wetland indicator value, rare (red or blue list) ranking, and whether native or exotic. Further documentation of the species file contents is in the 'read me' file - VMReadmeMar2002.doc - included in the 'zip' files. Tree species also have a 3 letter code - these are in the database and can be downloaded as a separate file from the link below. Download Microsoft Access database of species file
