Endangered and Threatened Wildlife and Plants Species Codes Description
Species and population codes associated with the Service's official list of scientific and common names of all species of wildlife and plants which have been federally listed as endangered or threatened. This list also contains species and population codes of species that are listed due to similarities in appearance to endangered or threatened species. Endangered species listings are referred to as "listed entities" because a listed action is tracked separately in the Service's official Threatened and Endangered Species System (TESS) database. A species can have multiple listings due to subspecies or populations being listed separately. Therefore, a combination of the species and population codes is necessary to create a unique identifier and allow classification at the higher species level, as well as the listed entity level. Type Species Code: Alphanumeric Population Code: Alphanumeric Syntax Species Code: Variable length field currently represented as ANCC, where A represents a letter depicting the species group code, N represents a number from 0-9, and C represents either a letter or a number. The species code will not exceed a maximum of four characters in length.

Below are answers to common questions private landowners ask about rare species on their property.
What does it mean when rare species are found on my land?
It means you have unique and valuable acreage. Native species that have been eliminated elsewhere still are finding a home on your land. This may have some legal ramifications for you, but it may also yield some benefits.
Are there different categories of rare species? What is the difference between an endangered species and a threatened one?
Endangered means that the species is in danger of becoming extinct. Threatened species are in slightly better shape, but still there is a chance they will soon become endangered . Furthermore, the state and the federal governments maintain separate lists of threatened and endangered species. fore more information, contact the appropriate agency listed at the end of this page.

The Board revises the list of protected species every five years and completed its most recent revisions in 1999. This following list relects those revisions. The next list revision will be completed in 2004. 1999 ENDANGERED AND THREATENED SPECIES LIST DEFINITIONS ** Federally Endangered Species: Any species which is in danger of extinction throughout all or a significant portion of its range. * Federally Threatened Species: Any species which is likely to become an endangered species within the foreseeable future throughout all or a significant portion of its range. Illinois Endangered Species: Any species which is in danger of extinction as a breeding species in Illinois. State Threatened Species: Any breeding species which is likely to become a state endangered species within the foreseeable future in Illinois. CRITERIA FOR STATE LISTING A species shall be included on the official list of endangered and threatened species when one or more of the following criteria exists: (1) Species included in the Federal list of Endangered or Threatened Species, (2) Species proposed for Federal Endangered or Threatened Species which occur in Illinois, (3) Species which formerly were widespread in Illinois but have been nearly extirpated from the State due to habitat destruction, collecting, or other pressures resulting from the development of Illinois, (4) Species which exhibit very restricted geographic ranges of which Illinois is a part, (5) Species which exhibit restricted habitats or low populations in Illinois, or (6) Species which are significant disjuncts in Illinois (i.e., the Illinois population is far removed from the rest of the species' range).

The Illinois Endangered Species Protection Board was created by the passage of the Endangered Species Protection Act in 1972. The Board consists of nine members who are appointed by the Governor. By law, the members include two zoologists, two ecologists, and one botanist. The Board convenes meetings quarterly, generally alternating between Springfield and Chicago locations. These meetings are open to the public. Four staff, based in Springfield, coordinate and represent the Board on a daily basis. Staff work closely with the Illinois Nature Preserves Commission and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources-Division of Natural Heritage.

Contacts Purpose of the rare species page The US Fish and Wildlife Service maintains a list of plants and animals native to the United States that may warrant future listing as species vulnerable to extinction. Species considered sensitive are candidates for listing as threatened or endangered under the Endangered Species Act. However, despite their rarity, insufficient information exists regarding population stability of and threat(s) to these species. To facilitate tracking of vulnerable species, we are maintaining this site to provide an overview of such plant species in Oklahoma. Accounts for each species include: description, life history, habitat preference, distribution, causes of decline, recovery needs, field-identification characters, an illustration, and a map of current and historical sites. If you are aware of populations of the species listed below that are not included, or if you know that populations listed have disappeared, you can help by contacting us.

Foreword
The American landscape has undergone dramatic changes over the past 300 years. The towering forests and vast prairies that characterized the landscape found by the first European settlers are now crisscrossed by highways and are fragmented by a patchwork of cities and towns, farms and subdivisions. With the growing population, the demands for increased agriculture, industry, and other pursuits accelerate the changes. During the middle years of the present century, it became increasingly clear that many of our native species of plants and animals were being stressed by such activities; some had been driven to extinction. Recognizing these trends, Congress took action in 1973 by passing the Endangered Species Act, making the conservation of endangered and threatened species and the ecosystems that sustain them a National priority and instituting public policy to work for their recovery. Over the two-century period preceding the passage of the Endangered Species Act, scientists estimate that over 500 species slipped to extinction in the Unites States, most due to habitat loss. In the 21 years since the passage of the Endangered Species Act, 909 species have been determined to be either endangered or threatened, and, for all but 7, their extinction has been prevented. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has been tasked to first stabilize and then recover these species by securing their populations, reversing their declines, and bringing them back to a point where the protections of the Act are no longer needed.
