Flowering Plants of the Sonoran Desert
Mark A. Dimmitt This section focuses on the most common, conspicuous, or interesting plants of the Sonoran Desert. Many are treated as groups based on their taxonomy (for example legume trees) or ecology (such as annual wildflowers). About Plant Names Most plants can be identified positively only by their scientific (Latin) names. We will also list regional English and Spanish vernacular (common) names when we know them. Scientific names are officially recognized worldwide and are validated by the regular reports of the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature, which also lists retained synonyms. On the other hand, there is really no such thing as a common name for the vast majority of the planet’s 300,000 species of flowering plants. There are committees that establish common English names for birds and several other animal groups, but no organization has assumed the responsibility for standardizing common plant names worldwide (the U.S. Department of Agriculture has “officialized” some for the United States). Moreover, a minority of plants have names that are common in the sense of being widely recognized, such as apple, rose, or carnation. The names of less well-known plants, and even widely-known plants, often vary geographically, and there may be numerous “common” names that are unknown outside of the given region. For example

Experience the joy of growing orchids in your home or office.

Light, temperature, humidity, air movement - together with water: these are the environmental elements that grow orchids in the wild... and in the Orchidarium, a wardian case for your home or office.
Given that each plant group has its own preferred, fluctuating environment, the Orchidarium allows you to monitor and regulate each of these elements easily.
    Light
Among the Orchidarium models are options for single-, double-, or triple-lamp fixtures that offer varying ranges of light within the units (see illustrations). Measured in foot candles this fluorescent lighting may provide low, medium or high overall light.
Foot candle output readings correspond to (left to right): Maui, Borneo, Bimini. Dashed lines refer to Bimini units only.
The low light of 350 foot candles is a good starting point for most seedlings, most masdevallias, phalaenopses and paphiopedilums, pleurothallids, and aerangis. Medium light (600-800 f.c.) will serve most cattleyas, some laelias and dendrobiums, ascocentrums equitant oncidiums and sophronities. The high light of 900-plus f.c. is appropriate for rupicolous laelias, some ecyclias, some dendrobiums and vandas.
In general, any range of fluorescent lighting calls for the following seasonal adaptations in length of daylight: Spring, 13-14 hours; Summer, 16 hours; Fall, 13 hours; and Winter, 11.5 hours. Because many orchids are photo-periodic, they need increased or decreased light to send out flower spikes (Some species flower in response to changing temperature).

    DINOSAURS AND PLANTS
Without plants, there would have been no dinosaurs (or any other land animals).
Plants are at the base of the food web (also called the food chain). Plants convert solar energy (sunlight) into chemical energy, which animals can eat. Plants are called "producers" or autotrophs because of this; they produce the fundamental food energy that all animals use.
Meat-eating animals (carnivores like Tyrannosaurus rex) get their energy by eating other animals, mostly plant-eating animals (herbivores like Triceratops) . The herbivores get their energy by eating plants (like cycads) . The plants (producers or autotrophs) get their energy from sunlight , converting the light into chemical energy using photosynthesis
Another amazing thing that plants do is change the composition of the air. Plants actually changed the chemical makeup of the Earth's atmosphere by giving off oxygen and absorbing carbon dioxide. They also contribute to erosion and the creation of soil. Also, since plants are stationary, they determine where plant-eating animals live.
The development of plants was closely tied to the fate of the dinosaurs. Since most dinosaurs were plant-eaters, the nature and amount of available plants dictated whether a plant-eating dinosaur would thrive or die (and indirectly, would even influence the fate of meat-eating dinosaurs). As plants evolved through the Mesozoic Era, their distribution changed drastically, leading to the demise of some dinosaurs and the rise of new types of dinosaurs.

From a bed of volcanic ash deposited in northeastern China more than 124 million years ago, botanists have recovered impressively complete fossils of some of Earth's earliest flowering plants.
The discovery of this new family of plants sheds light on the life and times of early members of an enormous category of flora, which includes flowers, trees, and many life-sustaining crops.
"Flowering plants are the dominant vegetation in the world today," says David Dilcher of the University of Florida in Gainesville, who is one of the new fossil's co-discoverers. "They're the basic food crop and fiber source for the world's population." Based on the age of the rock in which they found it, the fossil's discoverers believe this plant, Archaefructaceae, lived at least 124.6 million years ago, during the dinosaur-dominated early Cretaceous period. That date makes it among the earliest of flowering plants.
