Absorption: Light can be absorbed by Photoionization Ion for this process is independent of the intensity of the radiation. However, for intensities below a certain threshold it is obvious that it will be reduced due to the disturbing influence of Plasma Field Fluctuations . One can adopt the efficiency factor w )= E w /(E w p where E w is the electric field strength of the radiation with frequency (as given by the intensity I= E w p p ,e ,I ) the effective plasma fluctuation field (see Plasma Field Fluctuations and Stark Broadening with T n This leads to the circumstance that the Optical Depth with regard to photoionization is not proportional to the column density any more but has to be determined through the integral

Welcome to the WIS Plasma Laboratory!
In the Plasma Laboratory, we study processes in plasmas subjected to high energy deposition. We examine the interaction of nonequilibrium plasmas with strong electric and magnetic fields, the propagation of ionization fronts, the production of fast particle beams, generation of magnetic shocks, development of collective fluctuating fields, and plasma-surface interactions. Implication of the development of plasma switches, intense X-ray sources, generation of electron and ion beams, and industrial applications based on plasma-surface interaction are studied. The use of the hot and dense plasmas for X-ray lasers and the use of intense X-ray sources for high-resolution microscopy of living biological cells are considered as well. The diagnostic methods are based on fast high-resolution plasma spectroscopy of spontaneous emission in the region from visible to X-rays and spectroscopy of laser absorption and laser-stimulated emission. Theoretical analysis of the experimental data is based on detailed modeling of atomic physics processes that govern the atomic/ionic spectral line broadening, atomic level splitting under electric and magnetic fields, field ionization, multiple ionizations and time-dependent collisional-radiative calculations. Magnetohydrodynamic simulations are used to account for the nonequilibrium kinetic and transport processes in the plasmas. The research in the laboratory is relevant to applications of various plasma systems and analysis of astrophysical data.

Welcome to the Radio and Space Plasma Physics Group The Radio and Space Plasma Physics Group is at the forefront of research into the interaction of planetary environments with the solar wind. The most spectacular evidence of this interaction are the aurora which occur in the regions surrounding both the north and south magnetic poles. To understand these complex interactions, information from a broad range of theoretical and experimental studies is required and the group is active in many national and international collaborations. Experimental studies with spacecraft and ground based facilities are being carried out. The group builds and operates ground based radar facilities including the SPEAR radar currently being constructed on Svalbard and the CUTLASS radars. (The CUTLASS radar in Finland is shown below.) This site contains information about the work of the group and its experimental facilities as well as providing access to both real time and archived data. Use the panel to the left to navigate the site and learn more about the activities of the Radio and Space Plasma Physics Group. Nebulae
Fuzzy Patches in Space
Photo Credit: NGC 2440, Hubble Space Telescope The term "nebula" was originally used by astronomers to refer to any "fuzzy' patch in the sky that could be easily distinguished by a telescope, but was not sharp like stars or planets. Charles Messier, an eighteenth century French astronomer, published his famous catalogue of these objects in 1784 so that he and other comet hunters would not confuse them with comets. We now know that some of the "nebulae" of Messier's catalogue are other galaxies and some are clusters of stars. On the plasma graph, "nebula" refers to clouds of interstellar dust and gas within our own galaxy made visible by their interaction with nearby stars or star remnants.
Types of Nebulae:
Emission Nebulae
Interstellar plasma which absorbs and re-emits electromagnetic radiation from close by hot young stars...
Reflection Nebulae
Dust particles which scatter and reflect light from nearby bright young stars...
Planetary Nebulae
Ejected matter from a low mass star near the end of the star's life...
