All three of them have been and still are immensely popular on the continent, and their biographies, rather than their poetry, epitomize English romanticism to a non-academic readership: they were rebellious outsiders, they spurned society, travelled the continent, and all three died, tragically, very young. Their poetry has been anthologized rather frequently, and German translations abound in miscellanies of sentimental and romantic verse. This is where Susanne Schmid takes up her introduction to the three poets. Her book takes the biographies of Byron, Shelley, and Keats as a starting point and subtly introduces a range of influences that shaped their concepts of man and society, which eventually found their expression in their poetry.
