12. Neurotic Poets - The Link Between Creativity And Madness - Writers, Writing, Str
An exploration of madness and the poet.Category Arts Literature Poetry poets......An exploration of madness and creativity in the lives of famous poets.Includes biographical sketches discussing their work in context
http://www.neuroticpoets.com/
Madness takes its toll. Please have exact change.
ohn Dryden observed in 1681 that " Great wits are sure to madness near allied, And thin partitions do their bounds divide, " echoing the observation made centuries ago by the philosopher Aristotle that madness and genius seem to go hand in hand. In this cultural tradition, we often believe that the mental illnesses of great poets are simply a condition of their own artistic genius. Why might creative people be prone to such dementia? Perhaps it is the fact that their subject is the world of experience itself, reflected through their creations. Perhaps in some cases it is the unceasing pressure and stress that is the nature of celebrity. In their attempt to tell the truth as they see it, poets may find pain, yet their craft itself might offer one way to lend them power over that pain. The interest in the controversial aspects a poet's life itself can sometimes draw attention away from their creations. There is a general tendency for the sensational and pathological to attract heightened notice by the general public. This may not always be a negative thing, however, as it can generate more interest in a poet's work. These pages present stories about and works by several widely admired poets who courted emotional disaster throughout their lives. Sometimes their struggle was transformed into brilliant creations, sometimes the pain was simply too overwhelming, and they succumbed to it. The tales of their lives demonstrate that often tormenting relationship between pain and creativity.

They believe they're destined for great things, just like many of you, their eyes are full of hope, just like you. Did they wait until it was too late to make from their lives even one iota of what they were capable? Because, you see gentlemen, these boys are now fertilizing daffodils. But if you listen real close, you can hear them whisper their legacy to you. Go on, lean in. Listen, you hear it? - Carpe - hear it? - Carpe, carpe diem, seize the day boys, make your lives extraordinary. John Keating: We're not laughing at you - we're laughing near you.

N.B. : This is not a comprehensive work. In fact, it's not even close. Most of the statements here are true, but with varying degrees of significance. This guide is meant to give a brief overview of the major players in British literature. If you already know a lot about British literature, well, you probably won't learn much here, but hopefully you'll be amused. Try opening 2 browser windows for these documents (one for the body - one for the footnotes) it should make reading these much easier. Anthology of Poets Against the War
To Be Published in April by Nation Books
April 10, 2003 In late January, Sam Hamill called upon writers to "reconstitute a Poets Against the War movement like the one organized to speak out against the war in Vietnam." He asked writers, “to speak up for the conscience of our country and lend your names to our petition against this war” by submitting “a poem or statement of conscience to the Poets Against the War web site.”
Pre-order the anthology today (in US).
The response was overwhelming. Over 13,000 poems were submitted, and Poets Against the War collects some of the best poems submitted to the website. This anthology is both a cry against impending war and a celebration of the long and rich tradition of moral opposition and dissent by American writers and artists. Against the headlines of death and deception we read each day, the anthology poses an alternative vision of compassion and truth.
The beat goes on. From Paris to Pisa to Philadelphia, poets are speaking out for a world in which non-violence and international cooperation will ultimately prevail over the Bush administration's philosophy that the most horrendous crimes are justified in the service of American foreign policy. Please join us. Organize a reading. Join a protest. Lift your voice.
