Dallas, he was born in Philadelphia, Pa., on July 10, 1792. He graduated from Princeton in 1810 and became an attorney. In 1813 he was secretary to Albert Gallatin on a mission to Russia aimed at settling the War of 1812. Entering politics, Dallas served as mayor of Philadelphia (1829), U. S. district attorney for eastern Pennsylvania (1829-1831), and U. S. senator (1831-1833). In the SENATE he opposed President JACKSON 's war on the national bank but supported the administration in the nullification conflict with South Carolina. From 1833 to 1835 he was attorney general of Pennsylvania and from 1837 to 1839 minister to Russia. Dallas was elected VICE PRESIDENT on the DEMOCRATIC ticket with James POLK in 1844 and presided over the Senate during the stormy days of the Mexican War and the Wilmot Proviso controversy. Later, as minister to Britain (1856-1861), he laid the foundations for resolving an Anglo-American dispute over Britain's role in Central America, left unsettled by the Clayton-Bulwer Treaty of 1850. He also obtained a British disavowal of the right of search in connection with a joint agreement to suppress slave trade. Dallas died in Philadelphia on Dec. 31, 1864. State Library of North Carolina North Carolina Encyclopedia James K. Polk James Knox Polk followed a career path which was blazed by Andrew Jackson . Both men hailed from southwestern North Carolina. Both migrated to Tennessee where they practiced law and entered politics, and both were elected president of the United States. As similar as their paths were, James Polk was a different personality from his fiery predecessor. His life and career were marked by a relentless pursuit of his goals instead of the dramatic aura that perpetually surrounded Jackson. The effects of Polk's presidency, however, were more dramatic upon the nation. James Knox Polk was born on his family farm in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina in 1795. The oldest of ten children, Polk suffered from poor health. In spite of his less than robust stamina, Polk moved west into Tennessee with his family where they settled on land purchased from Polk's grandfather. Polk developed severe gallstones which were surgically removed in a risky procedure at that time. Without the benefit of modern technology, sterilization, or anesthesia, Polk remarkably survived the surgery. During these early years, his education was informal until 1813 when he enrolled in a Presbyterian school in Columbia. Polk soon transferred to a more challenging school and in 1816 returned to North Carolina to attend the University in Chapel Hill. The future president excelled at the University of North Carolina, graduating with honors in 1818.

The popular politician had been nominated on the ninth ballot as his party's candidate. His name had not been in nomination until the third polling of the delegates at the national convention. The outgoing President Tyler, who had taken office upon the death of William Henry Harrison, rode to the Capitol with Mr. Polk. The oath of office was administered on the East Portico by Chief Justice Roger Taney. The events of the ceremony were telegraphed to Baltimore by Samuel Morse on his year-old invention. Fellow citizens, without solicitation on my part, I have been chosen by the free and voluntary suffrages of my countrymen to the most honorable and most responsible office on earth. I am deeply impressed with gratitude for the confidence reposed in me. Honored with this distinguished consideration at an earlier period of life than any of my predecessors, I can not disguise the diffidence with which I am about to enter on the discharge of my official duties.

The vigor with which he pushed the annexation of Texas, the settlement of the territorial dispute with Britain over Oregon, and the conquest of the Southwest through war with Mexico extended the territory of the United States to the Pacific and greatly strengthened presidential power. Early Life Polk was born on a farm in Mecklenburg county, N. C., on Nov. 2, 1795, the oldest of the ten children of Samuel and Jane Knox Polk. The Polks had moved from Pennsylvania a generation earlier, among the first pioneer settlers in that part of North Carolina. James' great-uncle Thomas Polk was the most prominent leader in the community. Through Uncle Thomas Polk, Polk's father had benefited from a vast land speculation by which political insiders in North Carolina obtained claims on most of the good lands in what became the state of Tennessee. This made Polk the first president to run the country extending from the Atlantic Ocean all the way to the Pacific Ocean. It was during President Polk’s term in 1845 that the abolitionist and escaped slave Frederick Douglass wrote his autobiography, endangering his own freedom by doing so. President Polk believed that the United States had a "manifest destiny" to expand. His attempts to gain more of Texas, New Mexico, and California led to the Mexican War. The invention of the revolver by Samuel Colt helped the U.S. to win this war and gain five hundred thousand square miles of land. Polk had promised to serve only one term in office. True to his word he retired at the end of his term. He died only three months after

JAMES KNOX POLK 11th President (1845-1849) We must ever maintain the principle that the people of this continent alone have the right to decide their own destiny. - Message to Congress, 1845 Manifest destiny. Many of us remember that catchy phrase from school history lessons, even though at the time we may not have quite totally understood what it really meant. It's the concept of manifest destiny, though, which is taught in school (if at all), rather than which President championed it as a principle of freedom. As a result, President James K. Polk remains one of those six Presidents crowded into the period between 1840 and 1860 which tend to become a hazy blur, rather than attaining the place of greater prominence he actually deserves. In fact, a leading historian called Polk "the one bright spot in the dull void between Jackson and Lincoln." Despite this, Polk, who "came out of nowhere" to become President in 1844 and accomplished all he set out to do during his administration, managed to return to obscurity and remain there. Born in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina in 1795, Polk grew up to be such an avid supporter of Andrew Jackson and his expansionist point of view that he earned the nickname "Young Hickory" and, after moving to Tennessee, won Jackson's old Congressional seat eight times. When John Tyler withdrew from the 1844 presidential race, the political field became unstable. Tyler, a Whig, failed to get even get the re-nomination of his own party. The Democrats had no notion of selecting Polk when they began their convention in Baltimore, but he became a "dark horse" candidate and managed to secure the nomination. So little known was Polk as a national figure that the Whigs responded with the campaign slogan "Who Is Polk?" However, the energetic Polk, despite the fact of being regarded as sometimes aloof and cold, soundly defeated Whig candidate Henry Clay in his third bid to become President.
