Partial Order Programming (Technical Report CSD-870067, December 1987) D. Stott Parker We introduce a programming paradigm in which statements are constraints over partial orders. A partial order programming problem has the form minimize u subject to u1 >= v1 u2 >= v2 ... where u is the goal, and u1 >= v1, ... is a collection of constraints called the program. A solution of the problem is a minimal value for u determined by values for u1,v1, etc. satisfying the constraints. The domain of values here is a partial order, a domain D with ordering relation >=. The partial order programming paradigm has interesting properties:
  • It generalizes mathematical programming, dynamic programming, and computer programming paradigms (logic, functional, and others) cleanly, and offers a foundation both for studying and combining paradigms.

    Pop Bottle Programming
    by Marc Battle B efore you throw another empty two-litre pop bottle into your recycle box, stop and marvel at its design. Have you ever pondered the fact that years of engineering and testing have gone into producing that bottle? That some people have dedicated their lives to that object? And here you are, merely throwing it into your blue box like a sacrifice to some pagan god. The time has come to stop thinking of plastic pop bottles solely as containers for carbonated beverages. Instead, embrace them as valuable teaching tools for your school-age child care classroom. This article will describe how pop bottles can be used to demonstrate the principles of environmental science, engineering and aeronautics. Have you ever found yourself in a situation where the children in your classroom are clamouring for environmental science activities, yet all you have on hand are some old plastic pop bottles? Little did you know that you already had the basic props required to create personal composters for home and school use. In fact, pop bottle composters even allow the children to observe the food as it decomposes. Here's what you'll need:
    • at least three plastic pop bottles (two-litre size);

    Package-Oriented Programming Package-Oriented Programming in Relation to Garlan's Architectural Mismatch Hypothesis Our work is closely related to Professor David Garlan's notion of architectural mismatch as an inherent impediment to large-scale component reuse. We agree and indeed emphasize that architectural mismatch is an inherent impediment to large-scale reuse in the absence of an integration architecture that succeeds in ensuring that independently designed and implemented components can be integrated in certain defined ways. In the absence of such a technical standard it would be truly astonishing indeed if artifacts as complex as large-scale software systems did fit together easily, any claims of reusability notwithstanding. Garlan makes an important point. In practice, non-conformance to uniform technical standards is pervasive, so architectural mismatch is going to be a pervasive problem, and you cannot count on claims of reusability of individual components to obviate this problem. The conclusion is that we need tools and techniques to help us to bridge such mismatches when they occur, which is inevitable and frequent, even with components whose designers claim that they are reusable.

    Package-Oriented Programming Package-Oriented Programming in Relation to Garlan's Architectural Mismatch Hypothesis (page 3) Evidence to date suggests that Galileo is an industrially viable tool. We performed an industrial case study on the use of Galileo at Lockheed Martin Corporation. An engineer at Lockheed Martin concluded that Galileo has tremendous potential to aid reliability engineers in that corporation. Galileo has been acquired by over 150 enterprises in 32 countries. We are currently pursuing the possibility of licensing a hardened version of Galileo to NASA for distribution to and production use within the commercial avionics sector. Moreover, Galileo appears to have achieved quite tight and effective integration of multiple large-scale components. Galileo is distinguished in several ways with respect to component integration.
    • Tight Integration of Multiple Packages Galileo is based on the tight integration of multiple shrink-wrapped commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) packages. It is not built on a single package, but instead integrates multiple packages as co-equal components. Fred Brooks in his recent edition of

How about a TCP client that connects to a POP3 server to retrieve the total number of messages for a user's mailbox? In order to build such a client, I need to first understand the sequence of commands passed to a POP3 server in order to obtain the message total, and then replicate this sequence in my PHP-based client. The best way to do this is by using a regular telnet client to interact with the server and understand the command sequence - so here goes: $ telnet mail.host 110 Trying 192.168.0.1... yank-pop
    After understanding yank , the yank-pop function is easy. Leaving out the documentation to save space, it looks like this: The function is interactive with a small `p' so the prefix argument is processed and passed to the function. The command can only be used after a previous yank; otherwise an error message is sent. This check uses the variable last-command which is discussed elsewhere. (See section copy-region-as-kill The let clause sets the variable before to true or false depending whether point is before or after mark and then the region between point and mark is deleted. This is the region that was just inserted by the previous yank and it is this text that will be replaced. Next the kill-ring-yank-pointer is rotated so that the previously inserted text is not reinserted yet again. Mark is set at the beginning of the place the new text will be inserted and then the first element to which kill-ring-yank-pointer points is inserted. This leaves point after the new text. If in the previous yank, point was left before the inserted text, point and mark are now exchanged so point is again left in front of the newly inserted text. That is all there is to it!

    Adding Popup Help to your Program. Visual Basic Articles Articles Home Email Adding quick help to your programs is getting easier these days with the ever popular "Balloon Help" that is seen in almost all major programs. This same type of quick help is easy added to VB programs with the help of a few popular VBX's. The problem is that most of this help is just a word or two. How about if you want to give the user a little more help, with out making them go all the way into the programs help file? It's much easier than you would think.
    You can add the same pop-up help capabilities to your program that is available in help files. And it's easy!! Declare
