The major in population Studies and demography should preferably be combinedwith a major in Economics, geography, Sociology or Mathematics.

Back to Pop Studies
Back to USP At the undergraduate level, teaching consists of courses in social as well as analytical (formal) demography. The first year a very general Introductory course on population in the broadest sense in offered, SE101. This is followed in the second year by an introductory course in Analytical Demography, SE200. These two course are prerequistes for the more specialised and applied SE302 in the third year which includes the study of indirect techniques and models currently used in demographic analysis in countries in the South Pacific Region. In addition, a course on the interrelationships between population and development will be offered for third year students, particularly those doing a major in Geography, Sociology, Economics and Management and Public Administration, SE301. Students majoring in Geography, Sociology, Economics can do SE301 as part of their major in these subjects. All four courses are offered as school courses - mounted through the School of Social and Econmic Development, where the Population Studies Programme is located. Students may do a major or a minor in Population Studies and Demography. The minor programme consists of the four core courses of the Population Studies Programme mentioned above as a minimum. It can be done in combination with a major in another subject. The most relevant subjects for combination are Economics, Geography, Sociology and Mathematics.

69. Population Program Graduate Training
Andrei Rogers, Professor of geography, Director of the population Program, andChair of the Faculty Group in demographyspatial demography, migration

Graduate Training Program
The University of Colorado at Boulder offers opportunities for interdisciplinary study of population processes and issues through its interdepartmental graduate program in demography. The program is offered through the Departments of Economics, Geography, and Sociology. Students are prepared for a wide variety of professional, academic, and research roles in public and private organizations concerned with population issues and problems at the international, national, state, and local levels. Distinctive features of the interdepartmental graduate program are its interdisciplinary character, its focus on population policy analysis, and its emphasis on research training through direct faculty-student interaction in research projects being carried out within the Population Program, which provides financial support, office space, and on-the-job training. Students work under the close supervision of a faculty member and develop both substantive knowledge and research skills relevant to their specializations.
Course Work
The graduate program in demography offers both an M.A. and a Ph.D. curriculum. The former can be completed after three semesters of study. The latter generally will require three years of course work prior to the initiation of work on the dissertation. Requirements for admission are those prescribed by the Graduate School and by the social science departments that are associated with the interdepartmental program.

Most Orthodox Christians are Amhara and Tigray, two groups that together constitute more than 40 percent of the population. When members of these two groups are combined with others who have accepted Orthodoxy, the total Christian population might come to roughly 50 percent of all Ethiopians Muslims have been estimated to constitute 40 percent of the population. The largest ethnic group associated with Islam is the Somali. Several other much smaller Islamic groups include the Afar, Argobba, Hareri, Saho, and most Tigrespeaking groups in northern Eritrea. Oromo also constitute a large proportion of the total Muslim population. There are also Muslims in other important ethnic categories, e.g., the Sidamo speakers and the Gurage. In the far north and the east, and to some extent in the south, Islamic peoples surround Orthodox Christians

Objectives of Course This is an introduction to the study of population (demography), and an introduction to the use of demographic data, primarily from census sources. Students will learn the major trends in population dynamics, the factors associated with birth and death rates, and the importance of both demographic characteristics and migration on population distribution patterns. I will present general concepts and models of demographic patterns. We will also have short student presentations of project results, so that we can see patterns among the states. Upon completion of the course, students will be comfortable with basic two-variable comparisons of demographic data from census and vital statistics sources. Friday classes will meet in computer lab, McClure 214A. Text Yaukey, David and D.L. Anderton

demography is generally considered a discipline within the limited to, agriculture, biology, economics, geography, NASA, political THOMAS MATHUS ON population.
http://www.tomcravens.com/pop.html
    "POPULATION"
Current anthropological data strongly suggests that the first Homo sapiens arrived on the scene in Africa about 135,000 years ago. For thousands upon thousands of years early Homo sapiens must have constantly struggled to maintain their species somewhat precarious grip on existence. Demography is the study of the size, composition, distribution and growth or decline in human populations. Demography is generally considered a discipline within the field of sociology. Demographers utilize information and data from many areas including but not limited to, agriculture, biology, economics, geography, NASA, political science, and statistics. THOMAS MATHUS ON POPULATION Thomas Mathus published An Essay on the Principle of Population in 1798. Mathus's general idea is simple, "...the power of population is indefinitely greater than the power in the earth to produce subsistence for man." Mathus felt that human population growth always tended to be faster than the growth of the food supply.
    Mathus checks on Population
Positive checks function to control the population by eliminating existing people by raising the death rate.
