History of Portugal Much of Portugal's early history was shared with Spain, its neighbor on the Iberian peninsula. Portugal did not develop a distinct identity until the Middle Ages. The country's name was derived from the Roman city of Portus Cale, now Porto.
ANCIENT AND MEDIEVAL PORTUGAL
Various tribal groups inhabited Portugal from about 10,000 to 5000 BC. CELTS settled in the area after 1000 BC. A Celtic federation, the Lusitani, resisted the advance of the Romans until the assassination (c.140 BC) of Viriathus, its leader, made quick Roman victories possible. The Romans imposed their administration, language, and farming, mining, and road-building techniques on the conquered region, which they called LUSITANIA. Christianity was introduced into the area in the 3d century AD.
After the disintegration of the Roman Empire in the West in the 5th century AD, two Germanic tribes, the Suevi and the Visigoths (see GOTHS), vied for control of Lusitania. Muslims (Moors) invaded (711) from North Africa but concentrated their settlements south of the Tagus River. The Christian reconquest of Portugal from Islam paralleled that of Spain, with the impetus coming from the north. In the 10th century Portugal was attached to the kingdoms of Leon and Castile, whose ruler, ALFONSO VI, named Henry of Burgundy, the husband of his daughter Teresa, as count of Portugal in 1095. In 1128 their son, Alfonso Henry, aided by Portuguese barons, exiled his mother and soon began calling himself King ALFONSO I. His kingship was recognized by the pope in 1179. During his long reign Alfonso pushed the frontiers of his kingdom south to the Tagus River and attracted settlers to his new lands.

Portugal was governed for two years by a leftist military junta led by members of the Movimento das Forcas Armardas , the instigators of the revolution, while civilian politicians re-emerged and crystallised around the Socialist and Communist Parties and the right-wing Partido Popular Democratico . Under the constitution adopted in 1976, Portugal was nominally committed to a path of socialist development, but the country has since followed a standard Western European model of political pluralism. Portugal has been a member of NATO since its inception in 1949 and a member of the EC, now the EU, since 1986. The Government of Anibal Cavaco Silva which took office in 1987 concentrated on bridging the economic gap between Portugal and its richer fellow Community members. With average annual growth of around five per cent in the last four years, the Government was broadly successful on the economic front.

http://www.flight100.org/history/por.html
PORTUGAL Airships and dirigibles came to Portugal through the army, after their use in France, at the end of the 19th century. The first airplanes flew in Portugal in 1909, again with French influence. The Portuguese contribution of an expeditionary force in France during World War I marked the beginning of military aviation in Portugal. In the period between the wars there were many notable flights. From 30 March to 17 June 1921, Gago Coutinho and Sacadura Cabral flew a Fairey hydroplane from Lisbon to Rio de Janeiro in the first crossing of the South Atlantic. The longest leg, between Guinea, Africa, and Recife, Brazil, was longer than the aircraft's range, requiring fueling from a ship in the mid-South Atlantic near a group of cliffs called Fernando de Noronha. The critical task of navigating to this precise point was performed using the Aeronautical Sextant," which Coutinho developed from the naval sextant used by Portuguese navigators more than 300 years before. The first night crossing of the South Atlantic took place from 2 March to 18 April 1927 in a Dornier-Wall seaplane. Other Portuguese aviators had flown from Lisbon to Macau from 7 April to 20 June 1924. Other flights connecting Portugal to its colonies scattered around the world were made, all at about the same time by aviation pioneers from several nations.

Estoril Cascais
History Portugal Tourism Lisbon Estoril Cascais History e-Mail The picturesque towns of Estoril and Cascais with theirs pretty little palaces overlooking the sea have been inhabited from the remotest ages. From various interesting finds, it is known that paleolithic man lived there, and it is believed neolithic people lived in local caves 4000 years old.
There is also much evidence from the Roman period, dating from 1 AD. Villas have been excavated and inscriptions found of family names, names of the Gods they worshipped and names chosen for their sons. Also names from the time of the Arab occupation can be found. Ibne Mucane was born in Alcabideche and it was he who made the first literary reference to the introduction of windmills into Europe. He was an Arab poet and is remembered by a monument situated near the windmills on the road out of the village leading to the Autodrome.
Reconquering the land from the Moors in 1147, the people of Cascais dedicated their energies to fishing. It is believed the name Cascais developed from the word "cascas", meaning "shells", probably referring to the piles of empty sea shells. This connection with the sea gave its inhabitants the chance to request and be favourably considered, for the priviledge of self-government, thus severing its previous connection with Sintra. In 1364, King Pedro I granted the title of municipality on Cascais, but it only came into effect in 1370 when King Fernando gave the castle to Gomes Lourenço de Avelar.

Country Info Portugal Introduction Portugal General Data Portugal Maps Portugal Culture ... Portugal Time and Date Portugal History Back to Top Middle Ages, the history of Portugal is inseparable from that of Spain. Present-day Portugal became a part of the Roman province of Lusitania in the 2nd century bc. In the 5th century ad control of the region passed to the Visigoths, and in the 8th century it was included in the area of Moorish Muslim conquest. In 997 the territory between the Douro and Minho rivers (now northern Portugal) was retaken from the Moors by Bermudo II, king of León, and in 1064 the reconquest was completed as far south as present-day Coimbra by Ferdinand I, king of Castile and León. The reconquered districts were then organized into a feudal county, composed of Spanish fiefs. Portugal later derived its name from the northernmost fief, the Comitatus Portaculenis, which extended around the old Roman seaport of Portus Cale . Portugal became an independent monarchy in 1139. Its name derives from Portus Cale, a pre-Roman or Roman settlement near the mouth of the Douro River. The southern part of the Roman province of Gallaecia (now Galicia) was occupied by the Germanic Suebi in AD 411, and Portucale (Porto) was held by them. They were subdued by the Visigoths, whose state was overthrown by Muslim invasions in the 8th century. A Christian territory of Portugal was constituted in 868; it later became a county and was extended to Coimbra. Afonso Henriques assumed the title of king (1139) and annexed Lisbon. His successors took Alentejo and Algarve from the Muslims (by 1252). Portugal now includes the Madeira Islands and the Azores, first settled in the 15th century.
