Japanese Prints (2002)
PI: Professor Allen Hockley, Art History; Professor Mayumi Ishida, Asian and Middle Eastern Languages and Literatures
The Hood Museum of Art possesses a collection of Japanese prints, which Hockley uses on a regular basis in courses he teaches every academic year. The Hood makes every effort to accommodate classes for viewing and study sessions, but access is limited in several ways. Hockley and Ishida would like to produce a website that would circumvent the limitations of the study-storage facility and thereby increase student access to the Hood Museum's print collection. The website will be designed to meet specific pedagogical needs. In particular, its interactive and self-study components will offer students learning experiences that are impossible to replicate in the classroom.
The website will have four components, each of which will feature material and activities that will enhance users understanding of various aspects of the Japanese print tradition. The components include: (1) Print production, to acquaint the students with the process of Japanese woodblock print; (2) The Tokaido Highway, offering students a way to 'navigate' the highway and examine the ways print artists conceptualized its famous places and spectacular views; (3) materials to assist the study of the Kabuki version of Chushingura: The Tale of The Forty-Seven Ronin; (4) annotated versions of illustrations of the interior of a kabuki theater.

Case Study 1: Brook Primary School
Relationship with parents

Brook Primary School is a popular, oversubscribed, inner city school which achieves excellent results, at or above the national average at Key Stage 1 (in 1997: Reading: 91%; Writing: 85%; Mathematics: 91%) and well above the national average at Key Stage 2 (English: 80%; Mathematics: 80%; Science: 98%). In the Year 6 cohort sitting the National Curriculum Assessments there was one statemented child (Stage 5), and 11 children on the SEN register (Stages 2-4)
Free school meals taken were higher than the LEA average (41%) at 48% in 1997, according to school data. Attendance was in line with the national average, and the rate of unauthorised absence below the national average. There had been no permanent exclusions in the last year, and temporary exclusions were very rare. Against all measures, Brook Primary is clearly a very good school, meeting the needs of its pupil intake.

Guinea-Bissau
Introduction [Top of Page] Background: In 1994, 20 years after independence from Portugal, the country's first multiparty legislative and presidential elections were held. An army uprising that triggered a bloody civil war in 1998, created hundreds of thousands of displaced persons. The president was ousted by a military junta in May 1999. An interim government turned over power in February 2000 when opposition leader Koumba YALLA took office following two rounds of transparent presidential elections. Guinea-Bissau's transition back to democracy will be complicated by a crippled economy devastated by civil war and the military's predilection for governmental meddling. Introduction [Top of Page] Background: Following its heyday as a world power during the 15th and 16th centuries, Portugal lost much of its wealth and status with the destruction of Lisbon in a 1755 earthquake, occupation during the Napoleonic Wars, and the loss of its Brazilian colony in 1822. A 1910 revolution deposed the monarchy; for most of the next six decades repressive governments ran the country. In 1974, a left-wing military coup installed broad democratic reforms. The following year Portugal granted independence to all of its African colonies. Portugal entered the EC in 1985. * INTRODUCTION First, we would like to welcome you to the Lower Division Program in Spanish and Portuguese. Our goal is that your position as Teaching Assistant will help you finance your Graduate Studies. The program is designed to save you as much time as possible for your research, yet prepare you for a career in which modern Language Instruction is either the focus or a component. This is a supervised Teacher Training Program, so when you have doubts or questions, feel free to see Professor McGovern and to collaborate with your fellow instructors. This Handbook has been prepared to aid you, the instructor, as a guide to the policies, procedures and practices of the Program concerning its lower division Spanish and Portuguese language courses. They are intended as such to serve all lower division instructors (TAs) as a quick reference course on the mechanics of enrollment in the proper courses, on questions that may arise during the quarter, on the structure and the nature of the courses involved, and on the standards of teaching, correction, grading, reporting and record-keeping of the Department. Points not specifically covered in these Guidelines should be discussed with the Lower Division Coordinator, Professor Timothy McGovern.
