DevCentral Tutorials: Other Using ADO to call stored procedures offers VB programmers enormous performance advantages. While there are several methods for employing ADO to access stored procedures, some techniques offer better results than others. Scott Swigart surveys available techniques and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of each. Preventing Widowed Group Headers in Crystal Reports "Preventing Widowed Group Headers in Crystal Reports" by Russ VanBlon tells how to solve a commonly annoying effect encountered with stock reports produced with Crystal Reports. Understanding PostScript Programming This set of tutorials teaches you about the PostScript programming language so that you can control PostScript printers directly from your applications. Elsinore's Visual Intercept and Microsoft's Visual SourceSafe are just two building blocks of an overarching software development process model called the Solutions Development Discipline. Kenny Felder, one of the original creators of SourceSafe, walks us through implementing Visual Intercept in software process planning.

THE MATHEMATICS OF COMPUTER GRAPHICS
  • Call # 72963 (for CSc 535A) and # 72961 (for Math 535A) Instructor Robert S. Maier (Professor, Mathematics and Physics) Time and Room : 11:00-12:15, Tues/Thurs, Room 200, Economics Bldg.
This is a one-semester graduate course that focuses on geometric (`vector') graphics and geometric modeling, rather than on bitmap (`raster') graphics, or graphics programming. It does not overlap with CSc . In particular, it does not cover OpenGL programming. But it does cover the vector graphics support in several programming and CAD-related environments, such as the Postscript programming language and the new XML-based SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) format. Prerequisites CSc , and also Math 215, Math 322, or Math 410. Together these ensure a good basic knowledge of programming environments and linear algebra. Rudimentary knowledge of calculus will be assumed too, but linear algebra will play a more important role. Recommended Texts : I typically select topics from two texts, which are recommended rather than required. One is David Salomon's Computer Graphics and Geometric Modeling (Springer, 1999). For supplementary information on projective geometry, I use Gerald Farin's classic book

Dylan McNamee's PostScript Page
I like to write PostScript programs. Here are some I wrote, followed by some I really admire.
In the process of teaching a intro to programming class that used both Logo and Basic, I developed these PostScript figures to illustrate the possibilities using recursion and Logo graphics.
I have significantly elaborated on Reid Brown's PostScript graphing do-whicky, psgraph.ps (great name, eh?)
I wrote a font viewer that shows all of a font's encoded characters, as well as any glyphs in the font that aren't in the encoding vector. You'd be suprised how many ``hidden'' characters there are in common fonts. Part of this program is a PostScript quicksort routine.
This is a ``friendly'' draft notice I designed for prereleases of papers you don't want people to distribute. There's a hidden message that really only shows up when you print it.
I didn't do this totally amazing PostScript calendar NEWS! (Jan 1999) Thanks to Derek McKay (dm@jb.man.ac.uk), pscal is now year 2.4K compliant!
Jean-Serge Gagnon wrote a PostScript benchmark that is quite well done. You are encouraged to run it on your own printer, and send him the results.

49. Adding Labels To PostScript Figures
Involves only a very small amount of postscript programming to do this. The sametechnique applies to merge any two onepage PostScript figures into one.
http://www.sunsite.ubc.ca/Resources/Graphics/import/
Adding labels to PostScript figures
There seems to be much confusion among mathematicians about how to add labels, particularly ones produced by TEX, to illustrations in PostScript. The basic problem is that although PostScript is very capable of dealing with text, even with the CM fonts usually used by TEX, it does not have built into it any way to produce the formatting which is important-even crucial-to mathematical comprehension. Here is a more concrete example of the problem. We start with a graph of the function y = x for x = -1 to x=1 (click here to see the actual PostScript image): We want to add to this a few labels to produce (click here to see the actual PostScript image): The point is that the labels ought to be in TEX, as they are here. We shall offer three ways to solve this problem. They differ in their answer to the questions: Where does text end and graphics begin? To what extent should one expect to poke around inside a graphics file? How much work is a well designed label in a figure worth?

Search: Category Description:
Postscript is a page description language developed by Adobe systems in the hope of providing a portable format that would use the best features of every system. Postscript is a block structured procedural language that is similar to Forth. Each postscript document is a computer program that when run produces the printed pages of the document. Originally Adobe Systems intended for postscript documents to be fully portable between different printing devices, but certain computer companies insisted on including machine language routines in the documents produced by their systems and so the portability between different printers was lost. In response, Adobe created the PDF format, which allows formatting to be tightly controlled on web and printed pages, but requires a special PDF viewer. This is the home page for Jim Land Minneapolis Minnesota USA PostScript! Yes, it's a page-description language . It tells a laser printer where to put ink on the paper. Macs use it. Unix uses it. Adobe Illustrator and Corel Draw use it.
But it doesn't stop there.
It's a little-known fact that PostScript is really a computer programming language! That's right, you can write programs in PostScript. With variables, arrays, loops, conditionals, functions, you name it. With built-in capabilities for text fonts and graphics. And a stack. You can write a PostScript program using any text editor. You don't need a compiler.... because PostScript isn't compiled, it's interpreted. There's a free interpreter (Ghostscript): Download it and install it on your own computer.
Here's more info on PostScript.
