GENERAL INFO
One thing you must always remember about pot-bellied pigs YOU don't own THEM. Once you earn their trust, (and you will have to work for it), it will last a lifetime. In fact, it's better to relate to your little piggy the same as you would a young child. Pot-bellies are very loving, but extremely independent. If they don't get their way, they are known to pout, sulk, and even throw a little temper tantrum from time to time. It is also a natural instinct for piggies to resist restraint, and believe me when I say they have a good set of lungs, and a very loud squeal. There are times when even the slightest bit of restraint sets them off, especially when dealing with strangers. Just remember, piggies need to feel secure, not restrained. Pot-bellies can be very sensitive, and loving friends. We always know when our piggy is sad, or if her feelings have been hurt because she sulks, and her little eyes will actually tear up. It breaks her heart to be scolded by one of us, but then she's such a good piggy, we rarely have to do that. When Piggy first arrived at our home, she was unfamiliarwith her new surroundings

What's Your Favorite Animal? The Austin Zoo has a special book about the exotic pet trade. In Animal Underworld by Alan Green, you'll find stories about some of the animals at the Austin zoo. What are the most common wild animals people try to take in to their homes?
  • Iguanas Parrots Wild Cats
What problems do they encounter? Iguanas People are surprised at the cost of equipment and maintenance involved with keeping an iguana in their homes. Most people are unaware of how large these reptiles grow to be or how long they live. (They can live to be 14 years old.) They are not prepared for the amount of care these exotic creatures require. Also, the males can become very aggressive. The zoo gets about a call a day from people who would like to discontinue living with these reptiles they've purchased. Bearded Dragons are a great alternative to Iguanas. They are easier to care for properly. Their equipment and food is much less expensive. And best of all they do not grow to be big and aggressive.

Who We Are
Pig Placement Network is an adoption service for pet pigs, which is part of the Society for Advancement of Pet Pigs, a non-profit corporation. As with all pets, potbellied pigs can lose their homes or become abandoned. Our group, made up of volunteers, strives to assist these pets by finding new, suitable, homes. We also work closely with many pet owners, shelters, veterinarians and the general public to provide education about pigs as pets. Often, through education and support of a pig parent, we are able to solve a problem and keep a pig in its original home. The Pig Placement Network maintains a descriptive list of pet pigs that are up for adoption. These pigs are either living with their current owners or being temporarily cared for in foster homes. We need homes for both indoor and outdoor pets, some are babies, some are older, some have disabilities and require special care, others are overweight and need to be placed on diets, but most of all, each pig needs a loving home. Our volunteers recruit and educate prospective pig parents before matching an adoptable pig to a new home. Our goal is to make a successful match by carefully screening new parents and providing the information they will need before deciding to make a 15 – 20 year commitment to a pet pig. As is true for so many pets, the potbellied pig is not for everyone, but can be a source of great joy for the right person or family.

Pets Part of the Family
The Total Care Guide
Introduction

A Pets: Part of the Family contribution It's not easy being a pet. Oh, sure, people say they love you. They feed you on a regular basis. They act as if they're glad to see you when they come home at night. They may even let you sleep at the foot of the bed. But sometimes they just don't get it. They get upset when Rover eats Susie's term paper, when Tabby suddenly stops using the litter box, or when the new baby ferret nips at somebody's nose. They don't always understand that maybe Rover is bored and lonely, Tabby has a urinary tract infection, or that cute little ferret was taken away from the litter too soon. and your pet. Where did we get all these terrific ideas? Simple. We used a little ingenuity and contacted everyone we could think of who might have a pet idea or two. We called veterinarians, trainers, and behaviorists; pet store managers and hobbyists; a pet-sitter and a travel agent (for hints on traveling with pets). We got in touch with dog owners' clubs and breed rescue organizations, veterinary schools and bird associations, and clubs for owners of potbellied pigs. And we asked experienced pet owners how they've dealt with their own pet peeves. When we had more than enough tips, lists, and stories to fill this book, we showed every tip and every box to either a behaviorist or a veterinarian, who made sure that each one was safe, practical, and worth including. (They cautioned us that it's always important to suit the approach to the pet, so please be careful to consider your own animal's personality, species, and age when choosing the tips that will work best for you.) And then we took the whole thing to

Happy Tails, Sacramento's first no-kill pet sanctuary, was founded in 1993 by volunteers committed to a common goal: To create a safe haven for abandoned and abused animals.
What started out as six like-minded people in 1993, has grown to an all-volunteer organization with over 300 volunteers by November 2002. Our volunteers worked hard to get our Adopt-A-Pet Center
We have a major program for rescuing homeless and abandoned cats and kittens, dogs and puppies from local shelters. We also rescue animals from the streets and those who have been abandoned at our feral colonies. Although concentrating mainly on feline and canine rescue, we've also rescued rabbits, potbellied pigs, ferrets, and even a box turtle in the past.
Rescued cats and dogs are tested, vaccinated, altered, and microchipped before being placed in loving homes or relocated to controlled colonies where they are maintained in a safe, healthy environment. Volunteers visit our colonies at least once a day. Our extensive
