Industry Highlights
  • There are a number of specialty poultry products, each with its own unique characteristics.
    • Pastured poultry are raised in moveable pens that allow them to move about freely and have access to fresh pasture on a daily basis. Fresh grass can (depending on quality and composition) make up from 20 to 25 per cent of their diet.
    • Free range chickens are raised in a confinement facility, but are given the opportunity for free ranging. There's no industry standard for the number of square feet per chicken, so the meaning of the term free range varies from operation to operation.
    • Organic chickens are raised on feed that contains no added chemicals or medication. For chicken to be certified as organic:
      • the organic production process must begin with day old chicks
      • the feed must be certified as organic, meaning the feed processor must be certified

A Small-Scale Agriculture Alternative: Poultry
Author: Phillip J. Clauer, Poultry Extension Specialist, Animal and Poultry Sciences Posted March 1997 Written for the United States Department of Agriculture, Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service, Office for Small-Scale Agriculture
The low investment and small area required to raise a flock of domestic poultry makes this an ideal venture for the beginning small or part-time farmer. Domestic poultry can supplement family food supplies, and small specialized poultry producers can sell to several niche markets. For example, producers can consider selling organic meat and eggs, brown eggs, range-reared meat and eggs, live birds for ethnic markets, and birds for hobby, leisure, and purebred exhibition purposes. Most small specialty poultry enterprises raise chickens or waterfowl.
To ensure profitability, the small specialty poultry producer must do careful research on market opportunities. Successful producers for niche markets usually have unique products, good customer loyalty, limited competition, and the ability to maintain a profit margin when in competition with larger businesses.
Egg Production
Breed Selection
The best chicken breeds include commercial White Leghorn-type hybrids, which produce white-shelled eggs and are the most economical feed-to-eggs converters. Commercial production Reds (e.g., Rhode Island Reds, New Hampshire) or sex linked hybrids produce large, brown shelled eggs and are usually preferred for small range flocks. These birds have meaty carcasses and produce a good supply of eggs. The hybrids that lay brown eggs tend to be more docile than those that lay white eggs. All poultry breeds lay eggs, but they are not equally efficient.

Introduction Choosing the Proper Equipment Hazardous Sources and Their Contaminants Places Where You Can Buy Respiratory Equipment ... In Case of Emergency
Introduction
Who Needs Respiratory Protection?
  • THOSE working in dusty fields and buildings
  • THOSE handling moldy hay
  • THOSE working in silos
  • THOSE feeding or working with feedstuffs
  • THOSE working in corn silage
  • THOSE uncapping silos
  • THOSE cleaning grain bins
  • THOSE exposed to bird droppings or dust from animal hair or fur
  • THOSE exposed to fish meal
  • THOSE applying agricultural chemicals (e.g. fertilizers and pesticides)
  • THOSE working with toxic paints or solvents
If you work in any one of these situations and do not wear some form of respiratory protection, then you are placing yourself at risk for serious lung diseases or even death. You may encounter a range of health problems from minor, temporary discomfort caused by allergic reactions to fatal asphyxiation depending upon the work environment and the hazards presented. In each of these cases, however, proper respiratory equipment can protect you. Using such equipment is not the only means of protection in all of these cases, but it is a practical solution to safeguard and even improve your health.
