A COMMON ORIGIN By Fred Farley APBA/HYDRO-PROP Unlimited Historian If the legendary Gar Wood of Unlimited hydroplane fame were alive and racing today, he would probably be an Offshore competitor. Indeed, Wood's fleet of ten MISS AMERICA hydroplanes, which held sway in Unlimited competition from 1920 to 1933, had a closer kinship with today's Offshore racing craft than a modern Thunderboat. Replica of Miss America VII , owned by Geoffrey Magnuson Both Unlimiteds and Offshores can be traced to a common origin. These sublimely engineered machines are the fastest and most spectacular vessels afloatconstantly re-defining the state of the art on the cutting edge of technology. The Unlimited/Offshore genesis began around 1910. That's when the first "step" hydroplanes appeared. The "fast-steppers" skimmed over the surface of the water with a notch or "step" located approximately amidships on the underside of the hull. The "step" allowed the boat to plane over the water with much less friction than was possible with the old-style displacement craft. (The latter subscribed to the only known theory of water speed at the timeplowing through the water rather than planing over it.)

Inflatable Boats that Take You Flying by Erik Esser A sport which originated in South Africa is hitting the waves of the Detroit River About a year ago while surfing the World Wide Web, I stopped off at one of my favorite virtual spots, the American Power Boat Association's home page. This particular day I noticed something new in their racing category section. It was like no other boat I had ever seen. After making several inquires, I knew the only way to understand how well these boats perform was to go out and ride in one. I arranged this through the Hurricane Inflatable Boat Center in St. Clair Shores, Michigan, and met its owner, Bruce Wagner. He took me out on the Detroit River and gave me my first "flying lesson." He did it in this inflatable boat and it was the ride of a lifetime. I think what we did was against the law, the laws of physics that is. I loved it. When we returned to shore, I drilled him with the following questions: Where do these boats come from and how did they come to be? These boats were designed in South Africa and have evolved over the past 15 years. South Africans were in search of a watercraft to race and have fun with in the surf and conventional fiberglass boats were far too expensive to import. They originally started out importing inflatable boats from other countries but when they began racing them out in the surf, they soon realized that they needed something that could handle the roughest seas in the world.

Driver: Mike Weber, Dawsonville, GA Mike Weber officially became the primary driver of USA Racing Partner's U-10 Unlimited Hydroplane in June of 2002. In his 24 years of power boat racing, Mike has held numerous regional, national and international racing titles and was voted the 1998 Unlimited Hydroplane Rookie of the Year. Mike did not just "sit in the cockpit" during this 24 year period, but also became involved with the administration of the American Power Boat Association, the sanctioning authority for all power boat racing in the United States. He was elected to the Inboard Board of Governors in 1990 and then appointed to the APBA and Inboard Safety committees in 1991. By 1992 he chaired the Inboard Safety Committee and the APBA New Class Committee. 1996 saw Mike join the APBA Board of Directors, by election, where he sat among the leaders of the American Power Boat Association as they steered power boat racing into the 21st century. Mike spent the 2001 season working with USA Racing Partners as they dialed in their new race hull to race-ready condition working closely with team owner Kim Gregory, crew chief Ken Strickler and his brother, then U-10 pilot, Mark Weber. Kim Gregory gave the okay to actually begin racing the second race boat in Detroit last July and Mike Weber became the 2nd driver for USA Racing competing under the U-15 racing number for the remainder of the season.

Overview Displacements Hydroplanes Outboards ... Juniors Displacements These boats are probably the easiest to relate to for the public. Displacements are, from a distance, the closest resemblence to your average water ski boat. With the engine mounted "inboard", usually at the rear of the boat. The term "displacement" is derived from the the action of the boat "displacing" (pushing the water out of the way) the water as it moves through the water. Displacement classes range from 3.4 litre skiffs all the way up to the monstorous Blown Alcohol Displacements. top Hydroplanes Hydroplanes could be described as the "open wheelers' of boat racing. These boats are specifically are designed to go fast! They do not particularly have any other purpose. Hydroplanes are designed to ride on a cusion of air. The sponsons on either side of the boat create an air trap under the main portion of the boat. As the air is trapped under the boat, the resulting pressure effectively lifts the boat out of the water, causing teh boat to "plane" on top for the water. This style of boats are very spectacular to watch as they dance over the waves. Hydroplane classes range from 1.6 litre restricted up to the supercharged Grand Prix Hydroplanes. There is also the class of Unlimited Hydroplane which include such powerplants as Rolls Royce Merlin engines and in the past has included Jet Turbines.

Offshore Powerboat Races Ocean City Maryland U.S. Offshore Pro Powerboat Tour May 31st to June 2nd 2002 U.S. Offshore Powerboat Tour races in Ocean City Maryland Ocean City, Maryland The U.S. Offshore Pro Powerboat Tour comes to Ocean City June 1st and 2nd, for some exciting racing action. The two-day event features both professional and amateur powerboat racers with some of the fastest boats in the world competing in a variety of classes in the ocean just off the Ocean City beach. Larger boats will run an eight-mile course; smaller boats will race a four-mile course, according to racing organizers. The race can be viewed along the beach from the boardwalk to approximately 49th Street. A judges stand where races will be called by a public address system is expected to be at the Ocean Club. Last year nearly 40 boats participated in the Ocean City race. Where will the races start? The races will start and finish at 49th Street in front of Ocean Club, also an excellent place to view the race as they make the turn. The boats will race from the inlet and back to 49th Street. The length of a race is determined by classes that seperate the different types of boats. There is an anticipated 30 (or more boats) for the Sunday Pro. What are the dry pits and the wet pits?
