by John Everett Millais Around 1848, three men painters had their own concept about what painting should be. Dante Gabriel Rossetti, age 20, leader of the group, and his two friends, Sir John Everett Millais, age19, and William Holman Hunt, age 21, created a secret group called Pre-Raphaelites Brotherhood (PRB). These three students rejected The Royal Academy ways, and the PRB became a rebellion against them. "Lady of Shalott"
by John William Waterhouse Pre-Raphaelites Brotherhood is now known as Pre-Raphaelites. Many other artists followed the PRB, even though they were not members of the brotherhood. Only the three creators were accepted and allowed into the brotherhood. Many Pre-Raphaelite painters are Edward Burne-Jones, William Morris, Frederic Lord Leighton, Ford Madox Brown, and John William Waterhouse. Even though this brotherhood was a secret, and since the art style was so popular, four more were allowed to join the PRB. "Autumn" & "Spring"

Fauvism
lecture by Devon
This style of art created the way and characteristics for Cubism and Expressionism. Both art styles paint in neglected natural forms and have the love of untamed color. Even though Fauvism is believed to be shortest lived, it is one of the most colorful and interesting art styles around. Fauvism comes from the word "favues". In French, this means "wild beasts". This term describes their open lack of discipline. Fauvism began, like most art styles, with a small group of artists. At the turn of the 20th century, they exploded with a wild, vibrant style of expressionistic art that stunned everyone. Since then, Fauvism has been acclaimed as one of the forces that drove modern art In a way, Fauvism came from Pointillism. Pointillism developed from Impressionism. Impressionism left the cautiously graduated manner of painting of the past. They made their pictures with tiny brush strokes of pure color. Pointillism took things one step further by painting with tiny dots of different shades. As these two styles were emerging, Fauvism burst into the art world with influence from both art styles. Since Fauvism used bright and vivid colors with wild brush strokes, it's known to start the development of Cubism and other modern movements. Fauvism was a brief art period, but one of the most bright and eccentric around.

The Pre-Raphaelites
Liverpool was the only provincial town to have its own school of Pre-Raphaelite artists. Merchants and industrialists in the area often added Pre-Raphaelite pictures to their own collections and several of these have, over the years, found their way into public galleries. Pre-Raphaelite painting is just one strand of Victorian art and it shares certain characteristics with other schools and types of paintings. There are defining traits however and there are sections you can access discussing these in relation to the paintings where they are relevant. These areas are:
  • SUBJECT MATTER - Pre-Raphaelite paintings are often about serious subjects SYMBOLISM - Many Pre-Raphaelite paintings contain visual symbols TECHNIQUE - Pre-Raphaelite painters often used bright clear colours and small detailed brushwork with paint put onto a wet white 'ground'. Landscape painting often done out-of-doors with 'Truth to nature' LITERARY LINKS - The painters inspiration often came from literature CHRONOLOGY - There are sections available on the history of some of the painters.

The Pre-Raphaelites
Pre Raphaelites was the name given by a group of artists and poets formed in London in 1848, originally consisting of William Holman Hunt, John Everett Millais and Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Thomas Woolner, and Frederic Stephens joined later. Their endorsement of the detailed and idealized depiction of nature in early Italian painting led them to adopt the title of Pre-Raphaelites, and to stress their rejection of academicism, which they traced to Raphael and the High Renaissance. The guiding principle of the Brotherhood is summed up in their maxim "Truth to Nature."
This, as understood by the Pre-Raphaelites, was in fact a limited kind of truth. It was exact and precise detail. They had a craving to paint every leaf with botanical accuracy, every wrinkle and accident of form with a microscopic faithfulness...
The group used bright colours, complex symbolism and elaborate detail. Their realistic treatment of religious subjects caused great indignation, and the group's motives were attacked by critics. However in 1851 they became widely acclaimed after John Ruskin defended them, praising their aims and efforts.
The artists in the Brotherhood painted scenes of the childhood of Jesus and the Virgin and represented contemporary scenes with a moral message; as a whole the group had a strongly religious and moralizing cast. The group broke-up in 1853 but enjoyed a brief revival when Rosseti formed a second partnership with William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones in 1856 at Oxford.

Who were the Pre-Raphaelltes?
The Pre-Raphaelites advocated to recapture, as they saw it, the innocence, purity and honesty expressed in art just prior to the time of the Italian Renaissance painters suuch as Raphael (1483-1520). Above all, they strove to be faithful to nature for inspiration. Paintings by the Pre-Raphaetites are characterised by brilliant colours, delicate brushwork and minute fidelity to natural forms. It is not surprising that the literalness amd high technical skills of these young artists as well as the intense colours soon caught the attention of the contemporary art world. The three galleries of Pre-Raphaelite art in Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery show the variety of styles and subject matter that occurred within - the two or three phases of Pre-Raphaelitism that can loosely be distinguished. The work in Galleries 17 and 18 contains work from the early and middle phases of the movement while work in Gallery 19 was painted by later Pre-Raphaelites and their followers. One of the most radical aspects of Pre-Raphaelite art was the portrayal of contemporary life. Millais'

Edwardian Pre-Raphaelites
The Art of John and Mary Young Hunter 8th June - 28th July 2000
THE ART OF JOHN AND MARY YOUNG HUNTER is a rediscovery. It comes from a period of British painting which can still be described as illustrious and unknown. The early histories of the Edwardian years looked no further than the work of the Camden Town Painters for a home-grown reflection of what was happening in European art and neglected the alternative traditions which were clearly apparent to The Royal Academy and New Gallery visitors in the period. Only following John Christian's exhibition, The Last Romantics , at the Barbican Art Gallery in 1989, was it possible to argue for a whole group of painters whose status up to that point had been marginal. We now realise that the art of the period was infinitely richer than we had imagined and that it included many painters who merit further investigation. John and Mary Young Hunter are two important examples. Their story was an extraordinary one involving priviledged access to the great Victorian academicians, to the likes of John Singer Sargent and Edwin Austin Abbey as well as to the world of theatre and the Ballets Russes. And then, lauded in North America, they left England to join important art colonies in the western states, where they remained for the rest of their days.

Ruskin was born in London on 8 February 1819 and died at his Lake District house Brantwood, Coniston on 20 January 1900. He was the only child of a prosperous sherry merchant who was able to provide him with an aristocratic education at Oxford. His mother instilled in him her strict evangelical Protestant views. Gifted both as writer and artist, he rose to fame with the publication of the first volume of Modern Painters in 1843. In 1848, he married Effie Gray but the marriage was annulled in 1854. Effie had fallen in love with the young painter Millais, a Pre-Raphaelite, whose work Ruskin had praised.

PRE-RAPHAELITES, The
The Pre-Raphaelite brotherhood was founded in 1848, and consisted of a group of mainly British artists, all in their twenties, who rejected the neoclassical style which at that time was in vogue, wishing to return to what they felt to be purer Early Renaissance art. Their name comes from the fact that they believed that Raphael had introduced the art they so disliked. Though the movement lasted only ten years or so, the impact they had upon art in Britain at the time was considerable. The movement had in the main three phases:
  • realist - where the emphasis was upon historical and religious paintings (eg Rossetti, Hunt) "truth to nature" - where the stress was upon contemporary scenes, almost of surreal detail; a fascination for the Middle Ages, leading to painting of Arturian legend, and mediaeval themes and styles.
They tended to look to the past for their inspiration, and thus their pictures had religious, mythological or historical bases, particularly mediaeval themes. Their message appeared to be that truth was ugly, that to beautify it to make "high art" dress people up - contrive the situations.
Initially they all exhibited pictures anonymously, all using the same initials PRB. When a few years later the names of the painters became known, they were quite harshly taken to task by Charles Dickens
