February 9, 2001 The Honorable John A. Boehner, Chairman
House Committee on Education and the Workforce
Room 2181 Rayburn House Office Building
Washington, D.C. 20515 Dear Mr. Chairman: The American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCS) believes that every child should have the opportunity to learn the skills essential to becoming a successful individual within the family, community and society. The Family and Consumer Sciences curriculum helps students achieve this goal. It is founded in scientific principles and recognizes the importance of learning and understanding basic life skills. Through this curriculum, students of all ages learn to manage their personal finances, prepare and eat a well balanced and nutritional diet, resolve conflicts in a reasonable fashion, develop parenting skills, and participate in pregnancy prevention programs. This vibrant and vital curriculum is found in middle and secondary schools across the country! Our members are researchers, extension educators, teachers, and members of the business and non-profit community, each of whom serves the association's mission to empower individuals, strengthen families, and enable communities. AAFCS applauds the bi-partisan support for reauthorization of the Elementary, Secondary Education Act. We, too, believe that education should be the number one priority of every parent, teacher, and lawmaker.

Office: (607) 255-9737
E-mail: jkg3@cornell.edu
ITHACA, N.Y. Historians from around the nation will visit Cornell University in March for Women's History Month to speak on subjects ranging from single motherhood to women in American theater. A highlight of the month-long celebration at Cornell will be a symposium titled "From Fallen Women to Problem Girls: Single Pregnancy in Historical Perspective," featuring Regina Kunzel, assistant professor of history at Williams College. Kunzel authored the book Fallen Women, Problem Girls: Unmarried Mothers and the Professionalization of Social Work, 1890-1945 and the article "Pulp Fictions and Problem Girls: Reading and Rewriting Single Pregnancy in the Postwar U.S.," which appeared in the December 1995 issue of The American Historical Review. The symposium will be held on Thursday, March 7, from 4 to 6 p.m. in Room 165 of Martha Van Rensselaer Hall and will include a panel with Cornell faculty members Rosemary Avery, associate professor of consumer economics and housing; Cybele Raver, assistant professor of human development and family studies (HDFS); and Elaine Wethington, associate professor of HDFS. It will be moderated by Joan Jacobs Brumberg, professor of HDFS and women's studies. Part of an annual series of programs sponsored by Cornell's College of Human Ecology, the symposium "is a forum for demonstrating the relevance of historical scholarship to issues in contemporary American society," according to Brumberg, a cultural and social historian.

Located at new outpatient therapy center offering the latest in laparoscopy and hysteroscopy. Accomodations for visitors are nearby, safe, and inexpensive. FACT SHEET: OOCYTE SHARING INTRODUCTION The first oocyte donations were performed in 1982-1983, about 3 years after the birth of first baby from the IVF procedure. Initially, oocyte donation was considered a heroic attempt to allow young women with premature ovarian failure a chance to reproduce. In these individuals, simply put, the ovaries had "run out of eggs", but otherwise the uterus was normal and capable of carrying a pregnancy. Soon, it was shown that the uterus could be "programmed" by use of oral, transdermal, or injectable hormones to accept and carry a pregnancy, normally. It became strikingly obvious that pregnancy rates for recipients were as good, and often even excelled, that of conventional IVF-ET. Now, while the option of donor eggs is not as common as donor sperm, oocyte donation is considered a vital part of many, if not most, of the larger IVF-ET programs. There are many reasons why a couple might consider oocyte donation. The general indications are:

David Bainbridge
Making Babies: The Science of Pregnancy
Humans cannot be immortal because their genes would gradually deteriorate to a point where they could no longer function. Instead, we have sex and die so that our genes can live forever. (p. 32) What does a proud father do to propagate the joyous fact that he has a new daughter? Usually just beam with happiness, snap some photographs, and tell all his friends and family. David Bainbridge had another idea. He decided to reach a larger audience. So he wrote a book telling the story of her pre-life (and then some). We even get to see a picture. What good father can't resist such gloating? In an entertaining and clear style, Bainbridge writes about pregnancy and its aftermaths the way popular science works should be written. He also includes a bit on the history of the science of how we came to understand pregnancy, notably featuring the work, achievements, and errors of William Harvey and Ernst Haeckel. Perhaps most interesting is his emphasis on the immune system and how this results in the embryo/fetus and mother getting along, or not. There are so many fascinating topics covered in this book in addition to the ones mentioned above. Why, and how, did sexual reproduction evolve? What causes miscarriages? How do twins come into being?

A. Have Orphanages Gotten A Bad Rap?
Narrator: This is Science Today. Management professor Richard McKenzie of the University of California, Irvine, who grew up in an orphanage, says that orphanages have been getting a bad rap lately. He surveyed a group of people who grew up in orphanages in the 1950s and found their incomes today are 20 to 75 percent above the median.
McKenzie: Education, it ranges anywhere from 18 percent higher high school graduation rate to a 30 percent higher college graduation rate to where the former orphans have three times the percentage of advanced degrees than the general population.
Narrator: McKenzie says the reason is that, contrary to the bleak stereotype, most of the orphans feel their orphanages gave them opportunities and resources they wouldn't have otherwise had.
