The answer is New Mexico, nicknamed the Land of Enchantment If you think New Mexico is nothing but desert, consider this: New Mexico boasts more species of mammals and birds than almost any other state. This is partly because four great geologic regions meet in New Mexico—the Rocky Mountains, Great Plains, Colorado Plateau, and Basin and Range. Some of the flattest lands on earth are found in the grasslands of eastern New Mexico, which borders Texas. This region of the treeless Great Plains is called the

for Villains and Vigilantes A popular mainstay in comic books, movies, and popular fiction is dinosaurs. These "terrible lizards" capture peoples fear and fascination in large part because we know they were real. Dragons and faeries are fine to spice up a role playing game, but occasionally it's good to get down to earth! Most of these stats were made up over a year ago - and some almost 12 years ago, when Villains and Vigilantes first came out. With renewed interest in Villains and Vigilantes , I thought it was time to dig them up again. Dinosaur movies abound on TV and the big screen, dinosaur fiction is available in any new or used book store. There are plenty of materials available with ideas for using dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals in your campaign. Now, here are the stats. These stats will work equally well in both Villains and Vigilantes and the Rules Upgrade, requiring no modifications. If a Rules Upgrade character wants to have one of these animals as a pet, build it from scratch using the weight and Agility listed as guidelines. Your pet will most likely end up with higher stats than those listed here, but super-pets should be above average. Dinosaurs Prehistoric Mammals Time Periods Adventure Ideas ... The animals inhabit the guilloche (band) that links four circles representing the four elements - earth, air, fire and water - with the central figure of Mother Nature. The overall design was inspired by a pattern in the floor of the Cathedral of Siena. Meiere's design occupies the floor of the rotunda, the centrepiece of the Capitol which was built between 1922 and 1932. The animals, all from Nebraska's own geological history, are grouped with the four elements as follows:

J. G. Savage, Brian Gardiner, Douglas Dixon Hardcover 312 pages Revised and Updated edition (October 1999) in print This is a very good non-technical introduction to prehistoric vertebrates . Although there is a brief coverage of basic background topics - how fossils form, continental drift, etc - by the far the most interesting, and indeed the bulk, of the book is the coverage it gives to a large number of individual genera (more than 600 altogether, from primitive fish to Pleistocene mammals), each of which is illustrated by a specially commissioned full-colour painting. It is the sheer number and diversity of creatures covered here, that makes this book so interesting. (But even that diversity is just a tiny fraction of all the types of prehistoric creatures that are known to science). The realism of the art work tends to vary - some drawings seem to me more realistic than others, but I suppose that's just personal taste. The art work is still of good quality thoughout though, and often represents the only life-reconstructions available for creatures otehrwsie shown only as drawings of skeletons in

Answers from Dr. Mikael Fortelius
Q: If all of the dinosaurs went extinct, from what did the new generation of prehistoric beast evolve? Some of these animals look similar to some of the dinosaurs.
Thank you,
Janet Cameron
A:
Dear Janet,
Some of the large mammals may look a bit like dinosaurs but they are not descended from them. Mammals and dinosaurs are both very old groups, and mammals existed already at the time of the dinosaurs. When the dinosaurs went extinct some mammals survived, and these survivors gave rise to all later mammals. For some reason dinosaurs seem to have been better at being large, and mammals started to grow large only after the dinosaurs had died out. It is interesting to think about why some large mammals look a bit like dinosaurs. The main reason for this is that large animals have to be built in certain ways in order to function well, so they tend to have similar builds and proportions. Similar lifestyles increase these similarities by a process called convergent evolution. A long neck is a very common attribute of very large, four-legged plant eaters, for example. (An elephant has a short neck, but its marvelous trunk does the same job, probably better.) I hope this answers your question!

37. Answers From Beast Experts. -- Discovery Channel -- Prehistoric, Beasts
LH A From my perspective, the world would have missed out on oneof the most intriguing groups of animals, the marine mammals.
http://dsc.discovery.com/convergence/beasts/know/fish.html
Answers from Dr. Frank Fish
Q: If mammals are evolved to live in water, does it suggest that a sea lion, for instance, which lives sometimes in water and sometimes on land, could someday live totally in water, like the whales?
A:
Not the sea lion, but maybe its descendent could live totally in water. A lot would depend on the selection pressures that would tend to make other species descended from the sea lion want to stay in the water. The biggest hurdle to overcome would be mating and giving birth in the water. As the pups of sea lions require a period of time after being born to develop and grow before their first swimming lesson. The evolution of new, more aquatic sea lions would require that the young be more adapted to the sea.
Q: What if mammals never took to the water? What might the world look like today?
A:
From my perspective, the world would have missed out on one of the most intriguing groups of animals, the marine mammals. The largest of all animals that have ever lived, fast, intelligent, whales, seals, and sea lions are truly a sight to behold. If they had never evolved, we could only speculate that birds and fish may have taken the marine mammals' place. Penguins are fast-swimming, fish-eaters and there are a number of birds that fish and dive in the water. If birds could get to the size of an ostrich or elephant bird on land, why couldn't they become as large or larger in the water? On the other hand, sharks may have been able to occupy the niche of marine mammals. Some sharks are very fast swimmers and are warm blooded. Great white sharks are warm-blooded and excellent predators. Whale sharks and basking sharks are specialized for filter feeding, similar to baleen whales.
