Exhibition Section 1. THE HALL OF GEOLOGY AND PALEONTOLOGY:
In the entrance corridor to this hall, are displays of minerals and gems, representative of Iran and the world, Specimens of minerals. Some of the finest gems on gems on display include Amethyst, Lapis Lazuli, Fluorite, Opal, Garnet, Turquoise and Agate. The main part of the hall offers remarkable dioramas, beginning with an illustration of the creation of the universe, the solar system and the different eras of life starting with the Precambrian. Beautiful painted images, models and plastic casts of prehistoric animals and plants have been used to recreate life as it was in each era. Fossil exhibitions related to the scenes in each diorama are organized in cylindrical cases opposite the dioramas. The museum has one of the organized in cylindrical cases opposite the dioramas. The museum has one of the Quaternary Period (1.6- 0.01 million years ago) and fossilized plants such Sigilliaria from the Permian Period (290-245 million years ago). Other specimens on display include echinoderms, arthropods, brachiopods, corals, cephalopods, fish, foraminifers, sponges, bivalves and gastropods from the Paleozoic, Mesozoic and Cenozoic eras. Some exhibits such as Stromatolites date back to more 1 billion years ago. Remarkably, almost all of the specimens on display are real fossils, not casts.

Prehistoric tusks point to earliest fossil evidence of differences between sexes
Findings point to complex social behaviour by Nicolle Wahl Jan. 23, 2003 The large tusks of an animal that roamed Earth before the dinosaurs may provide the earliest evidence yet of male-female distinctions in land animals that existed millions of years ago, say U of T scientists. Robert Reisz , a biology professor at the University of Toronto at
Mississauga, and his team have found convincing evidence of sexual dimorphism - different physical traits between the sexes of the same species - in their study of fossils from between 252 to 260 million years ago. They believe that the male Diictodon , a herbivorous barrel-shaped creature, had two large tusks extending down from the upper jaw. The tusks, Reisz says, were used as weapons, possibly for ritualistic or physical combat.

Lesson 5 Dinosaur Time Capsule Objectives:
  • Students will conduct research to complete a time line of prehistoric life. Students will discover what a time line is. Students will demonstrate the ability to use approximate scale in developing a time line. Students will identify names of prehistoric life and give examples of different early life forms. Students will demonstrate the ability to plan and implement a project cooperatively.
Time Required:
  • 3 - one hour sessions
Vocabulary:

SYMPOSIUM Where the Wild Things Were The Flintstones , the entertaining but historically flawed cartoon, much of the hunting illustration is simply preposterous. Illustration by Regan Dunnick New Yorker article about the Ebola virus in Africa. The article, which evolved into a best-selling book, The Hot Zone , documented how a once-obscure disease jumped between species, somehow becoming lethally virulent in the process. The bones and teeth of mammoths and other extinct mammals may hold evidence of a pathogen that led to their demise. MacPhee and his colleagues have traveled to remote places like Wrangel Island (off the coast of northeastern Siberia in the Chukchi Sea), where some of the best mammoth specimens can be found. They hope that marrow extracted from mammoth ulnas and femurs will contain an ancient killer microbe. Though the ecological irony of this parallel is tempting, MacPhee stresses that hyperdisease is still only a theory. Until pathological evidence of disease is found in giant mammal DNA and RNA samples, his theory will have to compete with the other extinction hypotheses.

Size Matters What doctors have known for years might also have been true for dinosaurs and mastodons your body size is affected by your metabolism. We answer a listener's question about why animals are the size they are today on Earth and Sky.
Thursday, August 15, 2002
DB: This is Earth and Sky. Robert Huberman of Indialantic, Florida, writes, "Why are modern animals relatively small compared to prehistoric animals such as dinosaurs and prehistoric mammals?" JB: Robert, the largest animals to ever tread on land were dinosaurs. Scientists are still debating how they were able to get that big. Some think they had low metabolisms. In other words, they think dinosaurs were cold-blooded like modern lizards. If that's true, dinosaurs wouldn't have needed to spend much energy to stay warm. It also means that they could evolve to enormous sizes and still eat relatively small amounts of food. DB: But other scientists believe that at least some dinosaurs were able to generate their own heat. So metabolism might not fully explain their size. We do know that mammals such as elephants and people have to generate heat. This means they have to eat a lot of food relative to their sizes. This might put an upper limit on how big mammals can be. JB: No animal on land is larger than an elephant now, and that might be because competition for resources on Earth is fierce. Since the last Ice Age, there just hasn't been enough free food, empty space on land, or time for animals to evolve to larger sizes.

    Interesting Names
Woolly and Huge Strange and/or Massive Resources E xtinct Animals. Normally one would hear those words used to describe the dinosaurs - or perhaps the Dodo Bird. But what people don't often think of are the thousands of interesting creatures that lived and died on this planet of ours in the "in-between" years. The last dinosaurs vanished 65 million years ago, the last Dodo died over 300 years ago. The millions of years between the two (The Cenozoic Era) have been populated (off and on) by some of the largest mammals the world has ever seen. Some familiar, some bizarre - often gigantic, these Megafauna (Latin for "large animals") can be every bit as intriguing as the dinosaurs. T his site gathers 30 representative animals together for a glimpse at some of the remarkable beasts that walked the same Earth we now live on. All images have a human figure, used for scale. His name is Graham, he is 5ft 10in (1.8m) tall and he gets around . They also list the generally accepted height of the animal, the time period it walked the earth, a short description, and several outside links for more information. W hile the 30 animals chosen were somewhat arbitrary, most are well-known, like the

    01 EUSTHENOPTERON (Greek:'strong fin')
The ancestors of the four-legged land vertebrates are to be found among the fleshy-finned fishes. The only surviving fleshy-fins, however, are the famous coelacanth (Latimeria) of the Indian Ocean and three genera of lungfish, all of which are cousins of the land vertebrates rather than their ancestors. More typical was Eusthenopteron from the Upper Devonian (350 million years ago) of North America and Europe. This carnivorous fresh-water fish, 1-2 feet long, had lobe like fins with strong muscular bases, nostrils which opened into the mouth and primitive lungs. In times of drought It could crawl on land from pool to pool in search of water and food. 02 ICHTHYOSTEGA (Greek: 'fish roof')
Half-way from fleshy-finned fish to amphibian was lchthyostega, 3 feet long, from rocks of eastern Greenland laid down in fresh water at the end of the Devonian period (345 million years ago). It still had a tail-fin like that of a fish and a remnant of the bones covering the gill-chamber but it is considered to be the earliest known amphibian because of the well developed limbs and limb girdles which are essentially those of a land animal, and the backbone was strengthened to support its weight when out of water. lchthyostega was probably truly amphibious in its habits. 03 ERYOPS (Greek: 'long face')
This was a typical member of the labyrinthodonts, the large amphibians of the Carboniferous, Permian and Triassic. Eryops itself lived in Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico in Early Permian times (about 260 million years ago). It was a large, bulky animal, 5-6 feet long, which probably lived a truly amphibious life like that of modern crocodiles; the rather flattened head, armed with big teeth, suggests that it was a fish-eater. The backbone and other parts of the skeleton were very strongly built; it crawled slowly and awkwardly on its belly, pushing with its short bent legs. Bony nodules in the leathery skin formed a heavy armour.
