WORLD PREHISTORY
A global survey of the evolution of Homo sapiens sapiens,
with particular emphasis on the archaeological record of hominid activity over the past three million years.
A stone sculpture from Lepenski Vir site, Eastern Danube, made roughly 10,000 years ago: height c.35cm.
Increasingly we have evidence for the interactions between the foraging people who made these sculptures
and the farmers, migrating from Anatolia, who encoutered them.
Such encounters are the stuff of prehistory, the social behavior 'behind the artifacts'
which we will examine in this course. Anthropology 112, World Prehistory

    Introduction
Man, so ill prepared to compete in a hostile world, used ingenuity and a little luck to begin the long journey toward civilization. As a hunter-gatherer he led a nomadic life, honing his skills and improving his technology. Once he became a food producer he could settle down and the elements of civilization began to evolve. Prehistoric Art includes cave painting, engraving, sculpture and monolithic architecture. For art considered to be primitive, it is remarkably sophisticated and perceptive. From simple line drawings to polychromatic paintings, from engravings on rock to beautiful three dimensional "Venus" figures, from monolithic monuments to circles and passage graves, art served as a means communication, ritual and an outlet for man's creative spirit. Music and dance also became part of the human experience during prehistoric times. Back to Top

Flints and Stones: Real Life in Prehistory
Welcome to the world of the late stone age hunter gatherers. This exhibition takes you into the lives of the inhabitants of Britain and north west Europe from the time when ice sheets still covered land and sea, until the time when settled farming peoples were cultivating the land. Against the background of this changing world, people survived by hunting game and gathering food from the plants around them; on the move, following the herds and seeking out the fruits season by season.

    Neo Catastrophism Overview of Prehistory
Ancient literature describes a number of things which we do not see in our present world, including: All antique religions were astral in nature, the name associations between gods and planets being primordial. Now, if you were to pay some group of primitives in our modern world to devise an astral religion outright from scratch, they would invariably end up worshipping the sun and the moon. Whatever's in third place in the sky today is WAY back in third place.
