ANTH 100
World Prehistory
Instructor: John F. Scarry Teaching Assistants: Mintcy D. Maxham
Course Description
Anthropology 100 is intended as a general introduction to the discipline of anthropological archaeology and world prehistory. Archaeology explores the nature of human behavior and human societies using the material remains of that behavior. Because material remains are often durable and last beyond the lives of the people who created or used them, archaeologists can examine the entire span of our history, not just that part when people could leave written records. This is particularly important because many of the most significant developments of our history took place long before people invented writing. In the course of our study, we address several fundamental questions.
  • How do archaeologists learn about the past? How can they learn about what people did or thought from artifacts and other material remains they have left behind? How can archaeologists contribute to our knowledge and understanding of the present and the recent past? What is our history?

    http://users.interconnect.net/indy/prehist.htm
    Timeline: Prehistory
    Age of Giants
Orthodox Norse claim these were the sons of Ymir, fled from Odin and his brothers when they killed Ymir and created the earth. Oral dwarven history begins here, as does the enmity between them and the giants. Elven history begins here as well.
    • House of Durin founds Mordorrak in the Misty Mountains House of Gimor settles in the hills of the Misty Mountains nearby Elf city founded in Hullock forest Trade between elves and dwarves
    Time of Dragons
Dragons evolved (probably from dinosaurs, but noone knows), though apparently with fewer powers and abilities then they have now. Vast lands were dominated by them. (The exact time this occurred is open to question, whether before or after the age of giants. Dwarven and elven history tend to place this during, human history after.)
    • Dwarven refugees come to Mordorrak from many settlements ravaged by giants and dragons. Mordorrak expanded, mithril discovered Trade with elves greatly increased Elves discover secret of elven steel (with mithril) Elfwarthe evil elves (drow) are forced underground Fractioning of the elves
    Giant-Dragon wars
Eventually, the giant and dragon spheres overlapped and they started fighting. The fighting went on until there weren't enough of either side left to continue fighting.

Was present at the landing of the monolith depicted in 2001: A Space Odyssey. Actually, the monolith was simply another Tardis. (And if I may say so, an excellent scratching post). Despite a few design flaws, I have been generally satisfied with the evolution of the primates. Tried (unsuccessfully) to prevent the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. Did manage to get Lot out, along with his randy nieces, but centuries later, author K, with typical prudery, misattributed the whole disaster to a homophobic deity. Eventually I managed to partially rehabilitate the cities' reputation with help from Proust, one of my better ghost writers. Was worshiped as a God in Ancient Egypt. Ah, the spelt-fattened mouse of the Nile granaries is the most succulent of morsels! In particular, I arranged for Hapshetsut's rise to power. And Akhenaten was so smitten by my grandur, that he took me to be a monotheistic solar deity and founded a whole new city in my honor. Also, his wife was a babe! I must admit, I was tempted. She was right up there with the Gholson. Masqueraded as Plato's house pet. To be frank, classical Greece was not all it is cracked up to be. Alcibiades was a hoot, but Socrates was far too literal-minded to appreciate a good vowel, and Aristotle was simply a dedicated plodder. Had some wild times with Aeschylus at the festivities for the Elysian mysteries, and often played Cassandra in his productions with great success in spite of ferocious hangovers.

Archaeology 105: World Prehistory. Winter 2003. Message-Boards for the Virtual Sections The following are the links to the message-board for each of the nine sections of Archy 105. Much credit in heaven and even better grades are to be gained by using these boards to converse with other members of your section, or with your T.A., about material relevant to Archy 105 and to your section in particular. If you wish to share something with the entire class, there is also an “Archy 105 Motherboard”. The last is the one which Professor Close is most likely to follow, but she may also drop by the section-boards from time to time. The usual rules of netiquette apply ( be polite, respectful, constructive etc.) and breach of such rules will have a negative impact on the credit-in-heaven and better-grades part of the exercise. In addition, you have access to all nine message-boards, but should generally confine you comments to your own section or to the class as a whole. You can receive discredit for breaking netiquette on another section’s board; you will not receive credit for positive input. If another section has brought up a question that you find interesting (and, of course, they will), then you could either introduce it into your own section’s discussion, or bring it up on the motherboard.
