Great Books for Activities: Reading, Fun, Education A Year of Fun Just for Four's A Year of Fun Just for Three's Advertisement Read Write Now! Activities for Reading and Writing Fun has been developed by national reading experts for you to use with children, ages birth to Grade 6. The booklet has three sections, one for activities for infants and preschoolers, the second for children through Grade Two, and the third for older children. These activities are meant to be used in addition to reading with children every day. Reading research has shown that reading just a few minutes a day with or to a child significantly increases that child's reading ability. These activities help very youn g children get ready for reading and writing, and guide older children to expand their reading and writing interests and skills. In using these activities, your main goal will be to develop great enthusiasm in the reader for reading and writing. You are the child's cheerleader. It is less important for the reader to get every word exactly right. It is more important for the child to learn to love reading itself. If the reader finishes one book and asks for another, you know you are succeeding! If your reader writes even once a week and comes back for more, you know you have accomplished your beginning goals.

  • Three word games with instructions
  • Reading Fun (a little reading and coloring book) The Kindergarten program starts with the Alphabet game, which teaches letter recognition as well as phonetic sounds. Writing a Homeschool Newspaper
Contributed by: Kathryn Martinez EasyFunSchool.com I worried that I wasn't covering writing skills adequately with my children (all 10 years and under). I worried that I didn't seem to have enough time to keep in touch with friends and family. I worried that I wouldn't have enough quality projects to include in my children's portfolios. I worried about how I would track journalism credits for my kids as they grew older. Well, I'm not worrying any more! Once a month we will produce our own newspaper, the "Martinez Homeschool Herald". This will be a great way to introduce our children to creative writing, grammar, research, and journalism. Since they know that this will be shared with others, its also giving them new incentive to do their best work. Even the two youngest will get into the act with a column called "Kindergarten Korner" and "Toddler Time". Here's how we are doing it: 1. We chose a name for our newspaper. We dedcided to call ours the "Martinez Homeschool Herald". It sounds a bit pretentious, but it looks good on the masthead (the area on the front page of the newspaper where the newspaper name is written in large, bold letters).

    Teaching Reading:
    Phonics Programs that Work
by Jessie Wise I have recently discovered The National Right to Read foundation, an organization that describes itself as "The National Voice for the Advancement of Literacy through Phonics and Good Literature." They publish the Right to Read Report , which includes information about current resources available to parents and schools, articles about the teaching of reading, and news that relates to education and reading. There are also updates on political action concerning education and (specifically) the methods used to teach reading in schools. You may not agree with the political persuasion of the foundation, but I think that their efforts to return explicit, systematic phonics instruction to the schools is the answer to the widespread problem of children who don’t learn to read in the classroom. Their academic information is well-researched, well-documented, and agrees with my years of observation and experience with children.
A recent issue contained an article by a child neurologist with thirty-five years of experience. He contends that much of the over-diagnosed phenomona of ADD comes from a lack of basic education and poor training in habits of study. A quote from the article:

Summary of a joint position statement of the International Reading Association and the National Association for the Education of Young Children: Learning to Read and Write: Developmentally Appropriate Practices for Young Children Developmentally Appropriate Practices for Young Children The International Reading Association and the National Association for the Education of Young Children have joined forces to recommend ways for parents and teachers to support children's literacy development. The groups agree that experiences throughout the early childhood years, birth through age 8, affect the development of literacy and that teachers of young childrena term that includes parents and child care providers as well as teachers in traditional preschoolsneed to be aware of ways they can support the literacy development of children in their care. Although children in any grade may function at a variety of levels, there are five specific phases of development that can be expected for most children:
