Teaching Reading: Phonics Programs that Work by Jessie Wise I have recently discovered The National Right to Read foundation, an organization that describes itself as "The National Voice for the Advancement of Literacy through Phonics and Good Literature." They publish the Right to Read Report , which includes information about current resources available to parents and schools, articles about the teaching of reading, and news that relates to education and reading. There are also updates on political action concerning education and (specifically) the methods used to teach reading in schools. You may not agree with the political persuasion of the foundation, but I think that their efforts to return explicit, systematic phonics instruction to the schools is the answer to the widespread problem of children who don’t learn to read in the classroom. Their academic information is well-researched, well-documented, and agrees with my years of observation and experience with children. A recent issue contained an article by a child neurologist with thirty-five years of experience. He contends that much of the over-diagnosed phenomona of ADD comes from a lack of basic education and poor training in habits of study. A quote from the article:
