Learning to read can be an emotional experience for a child. Many children find it difficult to master the basics, often discouraged by the "work" necessary to master reading skills. Elmo's Reading: Preschool and Kindergarten allows children to play fun, interactive games with familiar characters from the Sesame Street television series while testing these basic skills using both phonics and whole language reading techniques. Elmo's Reading: Preschool and Kindergarten features two disks: "Elmo's Get Set To Read" Reading Basics and "Elmo's Through the Looking-Glass" Reading Adventure. The Reading Basics disk self-adjusts activity levels to match the player's needs while preventing frustration. The Muppets provide step-by-step instructions along with positive encouragement as children advance through three difficulty levels. If there is any uncertainty regarding an object, letter or word - players simply place the cursor over the questionable item and wait for a Muppet to identify it. Children are invited to choose one of six magical books from Elmo's shelves to get started. With each reading activity, players may choose one of three difficulty levels: Easy, Medium, or Hard.

Gains Found for the Poor in Rigorous Preschool
By JACQUES STEINBERG Todd Buchanan for The New York Times The Von Humboldt Child Parent Center was among the Chicago preschools included in a 15- year study that found that poor children in such programs had lower crime and dropout rates. Join a Discussion on Ideas on Contemporary Education oor children who attend intensive preschool classes are more likely to graduate from high school and less likely to be arrested than poor children who have not participated in such programs, according to a study that followed graduates of urban preschools for 15 years. Although there have been previous studies of the effects of preschool education, none appear to have been as comprehensive and long-running as this one, which is being published today in The Journal of the American Medical Association. Researchers at the University of Wisconsin tracked 1,500 children from Chicago beginning in 1985, at age 5, until age 20 and concluded that programs like Head Start could pay dividends long after children had learned to read — provided the programs were highly structured. The findings come at an opportune time for the Bush administration, which is preparing a scripted, pre-reading curriculum for the nation's 16,000 Head Start centers, a loose confederation that has traditionally been operated with few set rules. By contrast, the child-care centers in Chicago that are the subject of the study adhere to rigorous reading lessons. They are financed under another federal program, Title I.

    Dear parents,
New research shows that kindergarteners as well as preschool children benefit from direct and explicit instruction in sounds and words. As parents of young children, you know that your kids learn best when their five senses are engaged and when you can provide hand-on ways to master language and reading skills.
You can invite an amazingly entertaining expert in early reading into your living room by simply popping in the first video programÖ and watch the magic happen! Your emerging reader will enjoy watching each program over and over until the accompanying checklist of skills and activities are mastered. We do all the teaching as your child learns along with the kids in Fletcher's Place; you just sit back, enjoy the games and activities with your child, we do the teaching. Letters and words literally come off the page as learning to read becomes a wonderfully charged and physically engaging experience. What a contrast from the other reading programs that are mind numbing "sit, look and listen, drill and kill exercises."
Fletcher's Place is rich in language experience and in explicit, detailed and step-by-step reading and spelling skills. The many language and reading activities are developmentally appropriate for the interests of four-to-five year olds. The video characters provide master reading and spelling lessons couched in wonderful stories. You will have the thrill of exposing your children to the world of letters, sounds, words, fluency and comprehension as they bounce along a letter Sound Trail, do pencil and paper game book pages at the kitchen counter, slide sounds into words on the playground slide, or play Read My Hands Charades with you while they before bedtime. All you have to do is cheer them on as they take to reading like a duck takes to water.
