The Institute is a natural extension of the High/Scope educational approach, which has always had a significant reading component. Walk into any High/Scope classroom set up by trained teachers or caregivers and a print-rich environment will be there for all to see. In addition, the 58 High/Scope key experiences in early childhood development incorporate speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. In High/Scope classrooms, centers, and homes, children learn to read and write in developmentally appropriate ways guided by teachers who practice what has been presented in High/Scope training programs. Why Now? With such a strong and longstanding emphasis on reading, you may wonder why High/Scope has chosen to launch an Early Childhood Reading Institute at this time. There are three basic reasons:
  • First and foremost is High/Scope's ongoing commitment to the principle of of striving to upgrade the art and science of teaching and learning.

Getting Your Child Ready
for Kindergarten by Kendeyl Johansen Parents often describe blinking back tears on their child's first day of school. Make sure you're fighting tears of nostalgia, instead of worry, by preparing your child in advance for kindergarten. Marie Geiger of Pittsburgh has enrolled 5-year-old Chris in a pre-kindergarten program and is using this whole year to ready him for school. "We talk about school often," says Marie. "My son is the type that does not generally adjust well to change, so we begin preparing him for things way in advance so he can get used to the idea." In Alabama, Beth Skarupa also used preschool to prepare her daughter, who is now 6, for kindergarten. "We read books a lot together and did reading lessons in a book I bought," says Beth. "I got a handout showing what skills she needed and I made sure she was able to do them." Jump-start Learning
Expectations for pre-kindergarten skills vary across the country. In Geiger's case, her school provided a list of more than 70 skills that pre-kindergarteners should know before entering school. "Most skills [Chris] is able to do, but some he doesn't do well or at all," says Geiger. She's helping him master difficult tasks, like tying his shoes and memorizing his phone number, without making a big deal of it. Dr. Laurie Ford, a child psychologist from the University of South Carolina who specializes in preschool development, agrees with Geiger's teaching philosophy. "Don't make everything a golden teaching moment," says Ford. "Rather, try to incorporate these behaviors into your daily routine. Formal attempts at preparing preschoolers for kindergarten can backfire, making children feel pushed and stressed."

Ask your child about school. Each day, ask your children to tell you at least one thing that they learned or that happened at school. If your child answers ..nothing," ask something more specific like "What did you do in math class?" Usually, children have something worth saying and are more likely to share it if you make it clear you're interested. Even hearing a humorous story from your child is positive. The key is to get your children talking about school.
Find time for praise and rewards. When your children work hard, complete tough tasks or earn good grades on a test, let them know you're proud. Consider saying so with words and rewards. Rewards don't have to cost money lengthen your teenager's curfew for a special event or extend other privileges. Even when your child's efforts disappoint you, avoid negative labels. Children who are always called "dumb" or "idiot" are more likely to live up to

Reading Readiness
A.C.E. Reading Systems Explanation Sheet
A.C.E. has two programmes for children who do not know how to read.
  • "Preschool with Ace and Christi" also known as Reading Readiness. "ABCs of A.C.E." also known as Learning to Read.
  • Reading Readiness
This programme is also called "Preschool with Ace and Christi" but the term 'pre-school' can be confusing in New Zealand. Most schools in NZ using the A.B.C.'s curriculum use the Reading Readiness programme for their New Entrants students. It incorporates the use of 60 student PACEs covering the five core subjects and has sufficient activities for one year. The PACEs are filled with animal pictures, activities and full-colour picture stories encouraging your child to want to read. He will also learn social skills, the wonders of God's world, and the reality of God's love. It is an excellent preparation for the Learning to Read programme.
    ABCs of A.C.E.
The "Learning to Read" Programme lasts about 12-14 weeks and incorporates 12 PACEs i.e. Word Building PACEs I - 12. It is a multi-sensory, phonetic learning-to- read programme, designed to prepare a child for the individualized instruction of the A.C.E. PACEs. There are cartoon animal, songs and stories. These features help him learn letter sounds alphabet sequence and word relationships. Your child is helped in his physical and character development through poems, displays, and various activities. This programme needs to be followed by the "Advanced Lessons" which is a 2 to 3 week course on blends. Children should not start the ABCs of A.C.E. "Learning to Read" programme until they can achieve 90% on a Reading Readiness Test.

03/05/2002 - Updated 11:02 PM ET Teens need literacy lessons, too By Donna Harrington-Leuker Students in Willard Brown's chemistry class at Skyline High School in Oakland have to master the ins and outs of electron spin, chemical bonding and a host of other topics required as part of California's high-stakes assessments. But these juniors and seniors, who come from Vietnam, China, Mexico, Laos and other countries, also are learning to read and comprehend difficult science texts written in English, a language that is not their native tongue. Brown, not an English teacher, is the one overseeing that process. "It's hugely important for them to be literate in science," says Brown, who, as part of an initiative that prepares high school teachers to teach reading, includes articles from Scientific American and Discover magazine in his classes. "I get excited about what I read in science. I want them to, too."
