44. O'Leary Community, Prince Edward Island (PEI), Canada - History
O'Leary was named after one of the earliest settlers, Michael O’Leary, whocame to prince edward island from Ireland in 1837 and settled in West Cape
http://www.community.oleary.pe.ca/history.htm
Working on the railway - 1912 O'Leary was named after one of the earliest settlers, Michael O’Leary, who came to Prince Edward Island from Ireland in 1837 and settled in West Cape, overlooking the Northumberland Strait. As the closest business centre was in Cascumpec on the opposite shore, Michael blazed a direct trail to this centre. The trail became known as the O’Leary Road. In 1874 when the railroad was completed and intersected the O’Leary Road, a railway station was built, which was the first building in "O’Leary Station". People then began to move inland to be closer to the railway. Road making in O'Leary As the settlement grew, so did the business sector of the Community. O'Leary's first postmaster was John Frost; its first tailor, William Jelley. James Barclay and D.C. Ramsay operated a steam-powered saw mill. William Bulger moved into the village and acted as mail courier as well as the operator of a small general store. Some other early pioneers included Joe and Arthur Perry, James MacAulay, James Dennis, Robert Ellis, and Ebenezer Lidstone. There were also MacKenzies, MacPhersons, MacArthurs, MacLennans, MacFadgens, Champions, and Chisolms. Dr. Donald MacLaughlin located in O'Leary in 1886, and soon after a drug store was opened by William MacDonald. The Pate family landed from East River in 1888 and opened a general store, a cannery, a machine shop, and a cooper shop. Peter Pate was the first magistrate and justice of the peace in O'Leary.

"As host of a Maritime radio music program I am always on the look out for those songs we all consider exceptional. Songs of the calibre of Sonny's Dream, Out on the Myra, Working Man, Rise Again transcend our immediate regional boundaries and become universally treasured. Allan Rankin is the kind of singer- songwriter capable of producing music which will be celebrated internationally. His latest collection (New Branches) contains some of the best material to ever come from this region..."
Eric MacEwen, Program Host
The Eric MacEwen Show
"If you enjoy original folk songs of depth, feeling and honest traditional values, sung with sincerity and presented by excellent musicians performing sensitive musical arrangements - buy this CD."
Peter Richards, The Buzz
"From the title cut to the very last number…Rankin has notched up a beauty in the folk/country idiom and chronicles the life and history of Prince Edward Island with colour and dignity. This is an album where the great songs just keep coming at you like a fresh breeze, and each one is carefully wrapped in the musical talents of some of the Maritime's finest musicians and session players. New Branches is a musical liberation for Rankin and a real gift for Maritime music."
Steve Sharratt

Allan Rankin is one of Prince Edward Island's most talented and popular singer-songwriters. With poetic lyrics and beautiful melodies, his songs capture the very spirit of the Island and its people. Says fellow musician Rik Barron , "If you want to look into the heart of Prince Edward Island, listen to an Allan Rankin song."
Allan was born in Summerside , P.E.I., just as his anthem Maritime Star suggests, "at the bottom of the Glover's Shore road." Trained as a historian and museum curator, he began playing guitar and singing at university, and in 1970-71 was a member of the Troubadours, a resident folk music group at Confederation Centre of the Arts . Other Troubadours included Mike Mooney, Bonnie LeClair, and Faye Pound. From the moment he began writing in the late 1970s, Allan's songs have been steeped in the rich history of his province and its community life.
In 1996, Allan recorded his debut CD New Branches in the Halifax studios of CBC. This beautifully-arranged and produced recording has been acclaimed by critics and audiences alike. According to Maritime radio host Eric MacEwan, New Branches contains "some of the best material to ever come from this (Atlantic) region." Soon after its release, New Branches was given a special heritage award by the P.E.I. Museum and Heritage Foundation

The first mural was unveiled in the summer of 1999 and is pictured, right. This mural honors Joe O'Brien, a harness racing driver, born in Alberton, who was inducted into American, Canadian, and Prince Edward Island sports halls of fame for his racing achievements. In August 2000 a second series of murals were unveiled on the doors of the Alberton Fire Hall, depicting several fires which have occurred in Alberton over the years, as well as antique and modern firefighting equipment. In July 2001, the 4 remaining murals in the project were unveiled at Alberton's Canada Day Celebrations. Have a look at the other murals. Back to Main Page Contact Information Things To Do

The Island is famous for its vivid red soil, high sand dunes and 800 kilometres of beaches. Blessed with a temperate climate, half of the Island is under cultivation, the largest crop being potatoes, earning the Island the title of "Canada's Million-Acre Farm". Many of the Island's Francophones and Acadians live in fishing and farming communities. The public sector and small private business employ the rest. The largest city on Prince Edward Island is Charlottetown, with a population of 33,000. Sixty per cent of the city of Évangéline's population of 2,200 is French-speaking. The Island is situated in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and is separated from the mainland by the Northumberland Strait. Having remained isolated from the mainland for so long, the Francophone and Acadian population developed a community spirit which is now legendary. The Évangéline region abounds with cooperatives, including grocery, fishing, funeral and cable distribution cooperatives. Networking and cooperation hold no mystery for the Islanders! The Island has been linked to New Brunswick by the 13-kilometre long Confederation Bridge since the end of May 1997, a fact that will in all likelihood change the life of the Island's population forever.

PEI School Library Selection Lists Introduction The PEI School Library Selection Lists database contains recommended books for school library collections for grades 1 to 12. The database is limited to books but includes both English and French language titles. Most of the books have been suggested by teacher-librarians and curriculum consultants but other librarians have also contributed titles. Included in the database are lists from recent capital construction school projects. Because the records were extracted from Provincial Library Service order records information is not available for all fields. Also included in the database are a few shorter lists and individual titles with more complete information. You can search the database by title, author, or subject/theme. Also, you can browse the database by these fields as well as by school, level or publisher. Titles can be saved in a list which you can print and send to the Provincial Library as a book order. As you add titles to your saved list the total cost of the books is tallied for you. We invite you to suggest titles you selected for your school library or books used to support specific curriculum-related themes. There is a template to complete with the necessary information. Your suggestions will be evaluated and when approved added to the database. Please share your work and tell others about the books you found useful in your school. The PEI School Library Selection Lists database is a project of the Ad Hoc Selection Committee of the School Library Committee. This committee, which operates under the English Programs Division of the Department of Education, has representation from the French Programs and Services Division of the Department of Education, the Eastern School District, the Western School Board, La Commission Scolaire de Langue Française and the Provincial Library Service. Please direct comments or questions about this database to Carol Fitzpatrick, Resource-Based Learning Consultant, e-mail:

    Preserving Mi'Kmaq Culture
Each August, when the sacred fire is lit at the opening of the Panmure Island powwow, hosted by the Mi'Kmaq communities of Prince Edward Island, aboriginal people from throughout Atlantic Canada and the northeast United States gather to celebrate the traditions of the Island's First Nations. Threatened by disease, deforestation, segregation and assimilation in the 18th and 19th centuries, the resilient Mi'Kmaq culture is now a proud feature of both Island and Maritime heritage. Throughout Prince Edward Island, traditional Mi'Kmaq handicrafts, such as twill and twine weave baskets, are on display. Near the Hillsborough River, Abegweit First Nations reserves include Scotchfort and Rocky Point, two of three affiliated aboriginal communities.
    Multiflavoured Fiddles and Jigs
Glenroy, St. Andrew's, Donagh, York-the place names of Prince Edward Island hint at the class conflicts, religious rifts and old-country allegiances that are part of the island's settlement history. But in the 21st century, cultural boundaries that once rigidly defined Scottish, Irish, English and Acadian culture are disappearing, replaced with new traditions that combine many aspects of the Island heritage.
